Despite some clarifications, there's still a bit of mystery surrounding this video. This is clearly Caballe performing. She is lip synching to her own voice, as used to be the tradition in opera movies. This is from the pre-recorded Leinsdorf RCA album from 1968 according to one source. Some are saying this is not a full movie but just a lavish segment in a documentary film of Spanish opera singers. Whatever this is, the set design and costumes and actors are great! This is the perfect Salome
I can't believe this is Caballe . She is a great Wagnerian /Straussian. I had no idea she was so strong in this way.Geese is there anything she can't do? Mozart? Not the Countess .Has she recorded dove sono? This Salome is beyond belief!!!
@lovesGenet You wrote this 3 months ago. Surely you know by now that Caballe did in fact sing the Countess in Le Nozze Di Figaro! She sang it on stage in her career. There is a recording available on Amazon.com. Caballe wassimilar to Maria Callas in greatness. She sang Norma, Turandot, Isolde, Tosca, Aida, and much more. No one thought she would do all that when she debuted humbly as Marguerite in Faust!
I really enjoy her Salome and to me, she's as good as the best of them - Ljuba Welitsch, Birgit Nilsson, Leonie Rysanek, etc...I also like Jessye Norman's interpretation..but Caballe is very into the role...and she can sing the living daylights out of this role...it was her best role and the one she liked doing the most...here she is especially brilliant...they have to capture this on recording or DVD...
Though Madame Caballe was not known to have superb acting skills, I must say that this is the most chilling interpretation of Salome that I have seen; her portrayal of the Princess lust for the dead Jokanaan was just so depraved and terrifying. Also I am amazed at how she was able to tackle such a taxing role and as always her singing is flawless. I just wish that Callas sang this role though.
Sorprendentemente buena. No pensé que la voz de Montserrat Caballe fuese adecuada para este papel, pero estaba en un error. Fabulosa interpretación tanto corporal como vocal.
I know it seems like a paradox, but Caballe' was a great Salome, and she said many times that it was her favorite role. She also did a beautiful Strauss Ariadne Auf Naxos.
This looks like part of the Series Spaniard Operatic Stars. So don't get your juices going. The whole thing does not exist in this production. This is just this segment.
She is simply unbelievable! Her voice is just as at home in the Germanic operas as it is in the Italian! Just incredible, incredible, incredible!!!!!! She is every bit as good as Nilsson, and in some aspects, better. (Birgit forgive me, you're still a goddess!)

If you think that she's every bit as good as Nilsson in the germanic repertoire, you should find a hobby, and it shouldn't be classical singing. Just remember not to make that comment around any serious musicians or opera listeners - you'll be very embarrassed, and rightfully so.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It's also a bit uncomfortable watching a heavy singer roll on the floor, looking like she can't get up. With all due respect to Caballe - and I think she did an admirable job with this music, it's not something she should be remembered for. I frankly can't understand anyone lapping away at her version, with Nilsson and Rysanek who mastered the role. Stupid remarks, from posters who can't manage to reply with a substantial, well thought out argument will be ignored -it's a sheer waste of time.
"...a heavy singer roll on the floor, looking like she can't get up": Oh! How brilliant, polite and intelligent appreciation from you! Si eso es lo que te parece la imbatible hasta ahora Caballé, que no te extrañe que a los demás Nilsson nos parezca un viejo travestí alcanforado.

this is without a doubt my favorite opera. Does that make me a little crazy? Beautifully sung and acted. I love how she gets right down and dirty with the floor. Virtuosic in all elements.

I want this video! Where on earth did you get it? I have the sound only on CD. This is from around '72 in Vienna?

O.K. I'll be interested to read other comments about this. For me, it was a pleasant surprise; she acted well and sounded good.
