A satellite of this sort is made of mostly composite body with larger metal boxes, joints, tanks, etc. (actually the tanks are most likely a metal/composite hybrid). If detonated in space, the atmospheric friction will likely incinerate all the fragments, resulting in a complete burn. Left alone, you risk large parts hitting the earth still intact.
