Apart from his stunning vocal talent, he is a such a convincing actor, what is more surprising is the energy of his acting comes from the understanding of the music and the text, not just love of theatricals. I think he'll have a long career. Since the singer almost lost his voice, he knows how to protect and maintain his intrument , I think from 30 years from now, peopel will say, so and so's (any aria) was superb but you can't compare that to Kaufmann's.
@BearDugan : In case you haven't gotten an answer -- I think the aria is referred to as "Merci, doux crepuscule" [Thank you, sweet sunset] which is the first line of the text. If you look under Damnation de Faust you should be able to find it -- good luck. It is beautiful, isn't it!!
I saw him in Werther in Paris. It was my best experience ever at the opera. I also heard Alagna a feaw years ago. Alagan sounds so old style after Kaufmann...Kaufmann is not only a singer but a real artist.
Perfect! This interpretation is fascinating and moving! I think Faust, Florestan, Lohengrin suit him very much, his voice and his acting. Very impressive!
@xarissof I believe that what he has in his voice is the imperfect and fragility of all our imperfections and the beauty that comes with it...its not a typically 'beautiful' voice but one that goes straight to the heart...this is why i come back to his singing.....it touches me like no other has done for a very long time...
Indudablemente el mas representtivo de la nueva genercion e ternores:tiene todo para triunfar: voz, carisma, teatralidad, y sobretodo tecnica para modular su voz produciendo sonidos agradables sin esfuerzo.
I have heard many great singers in my forty and six years; on record, tape, cd, video, dvd, concert platorm and opera stage. This is one that will earn the title great with care and time. He is my find of the year on You Tube, along with Anna Shafajinskaia the wonderful dramatic soprano. I am completely humbled by this tenor!
Based on what he sounds like here I would almost agree. He has chosen a tricky path though and I don't know how much care will this envelop him with...
Yes, I agree, allthough I'm a great fan from J.D.Florez (tenore di grazia) But as I'm German I'm very proud of such a charismatic singer from our country, also acting wonderful, but too much lyric is not good for him.
I'm not worried. He sings so well, and doesn't sacrifice his voice for effect. As long as he respects his own limits, and doesn't try to impress, he can pretty much sing anything he wants. What a wonderful tenor he is!
This was a glorious except, wetting my taste for a complete Damnation; I agree with tjfloyd that this should be released commercially; fabulous artist and a tenor who is able to sing softly.
and Walther v Stolzing (Edinburgh), Don Jose (London, big success), Don Carlo, des Grieux (soon in Vienna), Alfredo (esp. great success in Paris), Cavaradossi (soon), Parsifal, Kings son (Königskinder), Rodolfo, Tito (on DVD), Fierrabras (was just on TV), concerts and Lied recitals. Just got the Gramophone UK Award for his Cd with Strauss songs. He is very versatile and doesn't want to be catalogued.

Everything a singer needs: Personality, acting qualities and finally a touching voice. How different from most of his comrades.

This is gorgeous singing and his sound is consistently beautiful.
What a pity he is tempted to venture in styles that put him at risk...

i am a big opera fan i admit it
i am studying the opera for the last around 9 years
i am familiar with all the known opera arias
most of them at least
never heard this one
this is the third time i am hearing it cause there is a strange energy this man reflects
don't know what it is but it's peculiar enough to drag me back here and listen it
i can say only bravo

With high notes he could be the best, but beyond medium the voice change too much. What a pity.

Terrific! Who is this guy? Conducting also seems to be very sensitive, which is extremely important in this work. Who else is in the cast?
