  • I write it g**ger since this song XD

  • word up, son...power to the gingers....

  • This song is good, but the song 'context' is his best.

  • Thumbs up if you're a true ginger,<3

  • The 6:04-picture is just too awesome.

  • This version is awesome! :O

  • this song makes me want to be ginger! only tim could do that :D

  • Is Nigger A Bad Word

  • @atikonium hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha....wait...ur serious?

  • @boywiththeblackveil Yes I Am

  • @atikonium .......what age are u? :o

  • @boywiththeblackveil 14 And Not American

  • @boywiththeblackveil Me, I personally find his question justifiable... When I say "nigger" people take offense, but when the nigger down the stairs say "nigger", his maties just say "word". To me, that is a silly double-standard, which I personally think this song draws attention to in a very good way... Hmm... Though I WOULD like to rephrace the question into "Why is 'nigger' considered a contextually bad word?"

  • @GrahamChapman I'm not an American, so I can't be too sure, but I think nigger was coined during the slavery era, and used as a derisive. It wasn't so much nigger as opposed to white, but rather nigger as opposed to human, and it's been used to derisively describe black folk ever since then. Now they've reappropriated it in an effort to be rid of its bad connotations, but they (we? I mean we as a species) have created the silly double standard you mention.

  • @ClashLoudly You know that really COULD be true. Though, then again, it could also be true that "nigger" evolved into a dehumanizing word, from a simple "s/he is black" into a "it is black". We need someone knowledgable on the subject...

Regardless, I cannot help but feel that the double standard is counter productive/defeats the purpose of them having reappropriated the word, since it, through the double standard, keeps its offensive/aggressive meaning and significance.

  • @GrahamChapman So true about the dehumanizing aspect of the word. Using the word offensively means they're no longer a "a black man" (emphasis on MAN) but rather "a nigger".

  • @ClashLoudly Yea... Then how do we solve the problem? I just cannot believe that maintaining and respecting a double standard is the right way to go... Somehow there has to be a way to make the word mean "a black person" without giving it any space to hurt or offend someone...right?

  • @GrahamChapman I suppose that doing away with the word altogether might the easiest and most direct solution. In the collective mind of society, "nigger" will always be seen as either a derisive, offensive, belittling term, or as a black-only word, or both. However, there really is no way to simply eliminate a word, so people should be educated to see that such double standards are unacceptable. Tough, with people being as stubborn as they are, but one can hope.

  • @ClashLoudly I honestly don't think it'd be easier to do away with the word, as opposed to changing its significance. (In Sweden we have the word "flicka", which these days simply means "little girl", but originally was synonymous to "prostitute".) But there is, of course, the problem about stubborn-ness; will the parts of humanity that have grown to respect the word accept that its significance is changed?

(This is very much like the sauwastika/iron cross problem...)

  • @GrahamChapman My mistake. I meant "simple", as in straightforward, not "easy". I agree with you, it's as you say: the best solution is to educate and teach, show that a word cannot be a racist insult and a way to say "friend" at the same time. It must either remain an insult, or, better yet, simply come to mean "black man", while still retaining its use as "friend" within the black community.

  • I'm a GINGER bitches!!!!

  • I can call him a ginger too!

Just remember what my granny always said about gingers....."they should be killed before the age of 3. After that, they aren't really responsible for the hell they raise!" My granny was a ginger too!

  • I CAN CALL HIM A GINGER BITCHES.

  • i can call him ginger ;)

  • I DON'T THINK THAT'S APPROPRIATE!

  • He misses out 'It's a homophone!' in this version :(

    Thats my favorite part

  • Most of you think the spelling at the start is talking about the n word. But Ginger has the exact same letters.

  • @xAnonymousss well what else could ni*ger ir n*gger possibly mean than... you know

  • that guitar is shexy XD

  • @XxxxxCluelessxxxxX it's not censoring if you don't cover up some of the letters, now u just put a * between n and i, it's still the same word...

  • @bigapu yeah, because if he'd write ni*ger or n*gger it wouldn't be obvious?

  • Thanks Tim, you've now got this stuck in my head for the rest of my life. GOOD ON YOU. :)

  • pic at 5:52 wow! eye chaning colour XD

  • Love this. Lol. One of his best songs ever. :)

  • If you live in certain parts of the UK Gingerism actually does exist... so its a double and hilarious and in your face reminder of what prejudice is: Stooopid.

  • So... 14 people were just like: Nope... no... he's an ass hole... I hate em' WTF!!!

  • Nigger's do have souls!

  • @ImUnattractive remove the apostrophe...

  • @BigBen81 Sorry bro~! Accident. Also, capitalize your sentences.

  • @ImUnattractive why?

  • 14 people can't do anagrams

  • Everyone saying crap, GINGER means someone with red/orangey hair, NOT just some weird nickname for the anagram, so stop assuming crap if you don't understand it.

  • @Odribah duh.... but the whole point is it's an anagram on the n word..... Thats what the joke is dude.

  • @xDroflmao1337 yeah I know and there were people saying ginger was another word for the N word, and I was just saying it for all the stupid people that he is playing with an anagram, and that they dont mean the same thing

  • @Odribah ah lol.

  • I'm loving the picture for every noun hahaha

  • I can just imagine him sitting down one day and suddenly realising that ginger is an anagram of the other one, and jumping up going, OH MY GOD THERES A SONG IN THIS!

  • hahahah, oh tim minchin- silly matchstick.

  • In australia, we call them Rangas.

  • I've gone ginge.

  • i love how he saids swords.... s-W-ords

  • you'll shit brix.

  • I wish you guys wouldn't comment with that word in it. It spoils the song. I mean, really. Show some decency.

  • @immelio i agree, i hate when people use the word ginger.

  • @stevenlickbleach I just don't want people to use it because if somebody were to read it in the comments then it would spoil the song.

  • Did you notice that he is blond sometimes?

  • @rougseth yeah his hair is dyed, look at 4:20. i dye it just like that :) and oddly, i have a similar natural hair color. maybe it's because it's so bland, you just have to go wild and dye it red :)

  • Is it just me who thinks the photo at 2:07 is super sexy

  • from now on I'm gonna call all my ginger friends tampon lol :D

  • I LOVE YOU TIM !

  • AHAHAH!

  • Once you've gone ginge, YOU CAN'T GO BACK ^_^

  • i totally didnt realise then when you jumble up the letters in 'ginger' you get 'that word' :| what a genius <3

  • @rmdlskms it's nigger.

  • @ScreamoBaptism yes i knew which word it was, i just dont like that word.

  • this man is bloody brilliant love it

  • @FairyPirateQueen I'm a guy and i can honestly say that even I feel strangely attracted to him.

  • Only a ninja,... can sneak up on another ninja.

    I fucking died laughing.

  • I actually stopped and stared at this vid for about half a minute, i think i was in awe!

BTW no biggie but if you want

  • @FairyPirateQueen Totally not just you......

  • @FairyPirateQueen JUST YOU

  • Ginger

  • hahaha i thought he was going to say "n*igger"!! he's brilliant

  • @XxxxxCluelessxxxxX i think evry 1 does =)

  • @XxxxxCluelessxxxxX i think thats what he was trying to get us to think

  • Comment removed

  • @XxxxxCluelessxxxxX You mean "NIGGER!"?

  • @XxxxxCluelessxxxxX normally if you do *s, you remove one of the letters and replace it with a *, not just add a * :P

But ya, that was what he was aiming at.

  • @XxxxxCluelessxxxxX Well no shit Sherlock

  • @FairyPirateQueen Yes, yes he is.

  • Being white or black or any other inherited physical "type" is certainly not merely a 'social construct' if it was the consistency of response from others would not exist. The same applies to prejudice towards those with disabilties such as autism, cerebral palsy etc. The important thing is that prejudice hurts the recipient - it doesn't matter what the cause is. Kids with ginger hair are subjected to more hassle than others but there are probably worse things to attract prejudice.

  • @everyoneelse One's race is determined by one's country of origin or the country of origin of their family. Being ginger has nothing to do with their race, it's down to their genetic make-up. If both parents hold a gene for red hair and those genes meet, they're gonna get a red headed child. End of. Country of origin or heritage counts for naught. Hence race counts for naught. So XP

  • @mizzfuntime

You're completely wrong. Do you think races evolved by the boundaries of countries? Complete and utter bullshit.

In fact you can't say: this is a race, that is a race. Every being on this planet (except some twins and clones) have different DNA, and therefore all are different. The word race is something people invented to simplify the world around them.

The only thing you can say is: your forefathers determine your dna and thus the distance in which we are related.

  • @crimron well actually race is a word to describe a group of beings with the little differences in their DNA like all white people with blond hair..) and of course they dindt evolve in the boundries of counteries but in the boundries of areas so its not so much of bullshit as you might think. sure there is nor border that says no caucasian beyond this point but it is very clear if looked upon from the world map.

i'm neither a racist nor a native English-speaker so please dont judge me by this.

  • @HeartTheBacon

I'm not an English speaker or a racist. But if you look these days, races are so mixed that there are no boundaries. There are a lot of blonde people in Brazil for instance. A lot of Chinese in Western America. A lot of Middle Eastern in Europe, It is not so easy to see on the map anymore.

  • @crimron sure "these days" (uh i hate to use that phrase) its pretty mixed up because of the ability to travel around the world in like 80 hours. so there are now all kinds of people everywhere but still have all races there "homes". sure there are many chinese in the us but there are WAY more chinese in china^^

  • something so few of u seem to have noticed is that this song is also ment to stir up some thoughts to racism... the word Ginger... rearanged will be Nigg....

  • this is such a cute clip - i LOVE the tampon and the little ninja-puppet

though i must protest against the content of the song: if i ever call a ginger a ginger, it'll be while i'm hitting on him :)

i really can't imagine red-haired children being picked at for their haircolour more than all other children are being picked at for anything else that's as normal

  • @jame55millie lol what's wrong with muppets....? lol you have a point, its a parody =)

  • haha ginger is the greatest thing going aha i love it :) wouldn't have it any other way :)

  • i'm ginger and ive been called all sorts and it dont mean a thing to me. actually it makes me feel kinda special that people want to waste their time talking about me so to all you 'gingerists' i thank you :L

  • Whoever is calling this Legend a ginger, your probably not ginger, so stfu... ;D

  • Tim Minchin is the bastard son of Stephen Sondheim, Cole Porter, Lenny Bruce, George Gershwin and George Carlin. And the end is greater than the sum of even those extraordinary parts. Tim Minchin is how I know there is hope for the world.

  • Never been more proud to have be born with red hair. Awesome. d-(^_^)-b

  • he is a genius :D

  • being ginger is as much of a race as being black is. gingers and niggers are in the same clade, there are no sub-races in our species. sometimes people have characteristics of both blackness and gingerness! not me.

  • Dear world,

You don't understand the pain I feel when you call me "American." You say it in such a derogatory way. As if it is synonymous with being homophobic, stupid, racist, fat, and aggressive. You need to respect the power of words, regardless of context. You need to stop calling us "American."

♫ Cause only an American can call another American American♪

    Sincerely,

    Glenn Beck

  • @slurpeeday

We DO understand the pain you feel, as it is INTENDED? given as a whole you hold records for obesity levels, there are states famous for their homophobic nature, you had George W. Bush for president, so blatantly, stupid - especially as you RE-elected him after the FIRST time he had in power!

so im gunna go ahead and group you all under the banner of "American" and continue to let the derogatory connotations speak for themselves!

  • @oliverdixon11 Do you really think I want the rest of the world to stop calling us Americans? Do you think Tim wants non-gingers to stop calling gingers 'ginger'? Do you think that he would rather be called tampon than ginger?

Here's a new word for you, "irony."

  • @slurpeeday Here's 2 new words for you 'Pompous cunt'

  • I`m a ginger so can call him ginger YEAH

  • can everyone just stop being pathetic. he is ginger for fuck sake. saying the words ginger or even nigger isnt racist. racism is TRYING to offend people cos of there ethicity. and i cant stress the word TRYING enough. a lot of people who are accused of racism arent, they just have a touchy, overly sensitive person listenin to them on tv or radio. the sort of twats the bbc gets a lot of letters from.

tims great, sorry for ramblin, thanx for the upload.

  • i recon people who think its racist should just piss off and listen to gosple music

  • I think ginger kids should all start calling eachother "Ma Ginger" and I bet after a while there'll be a law against using the word. Ordering ginger beer at the pub will be a nightmare.. xD

  • "Just consider something for a moment: Africa, where 'black people' came from, is primarily populated by them. "

What? Have you been to Africa? There are a lot of Caucasians living in Africa. Besides ALL people came from Africa.

  • Are you really that dense to think this song is about the word ginger or people with red hair?

OMG, and I thought only Americans could be this stupid. Do you recall how you felt when you first heard the beginning of the song? You KNEW what he was talking about, didn't you? Of course, everyone knows. Then, in a brilliant twist forces you to listen to him use the word over and over again to drum it into your racist white heads. (only he scrambles the word so that it now applies to him)

  • @kcdad2806 oh just shut up

  • @kcdad2806 HaHaHaHa. Just one more stupid american i guess. Its called a blind. He uses the anagram to make the audience uncomfortable, before spending a whole song talking about being a ginger, releasing the previous tension. Are there any refereces to any sufferings of Black people? NO. You sir, are a muppet. : )

  • @jame55millie

    You are such a douchebag.

Are there any references to black people? What does that have to do with it? He is talking about irrational hatred of people based on some physical characteristic. In this case it is red hair and fair complexions. Even more ironic because the listener anticipates it to be irrational hatred of people with dark hair and dark complexions.

The song is about irrational hatred... of any kind.

  • @kcdad2806 PAY ATTENTION. If you are gonna comment on someones reply to another comment. You would be best served to read that comment too. I was replying to someone saying this song was in effect racist propoganda. You have done nothing but make yourself look ignorant. Moron. Did you know what an anagram was or did you google it? I can guess. And lastly, he IS specifically talking about being ginger, not the abstract concept of irrational hatred. Listen to the song. Twatcup.

  • @jame55millie

because there is such racist hatred against redheads...

  • @kcdad2806 Just consider something for a moment: Africa, where 'black people' came from, is primarily populated by them. On the other hand, of the 4 countries where 'ginger people' came from (England/France/Scotland/Ireland) have been reduced to them being a minority - with only Ireland and Scotland being the ones that people think of as them coming from.

Also, I love the way you've racistly said "racist white heads" - or would that be discrimination against non-bald old people? Or albinos?

  • I think, I fell in love <3

  • Comment removed

  • This is so clever. Leads you on for ages, and then he goes and talks about gingers. I love Tim <3

  • DO YOU THINK THAT'S APPROPRIATE?!

    laughing my arse off.

  • epic song is epic.

  • Now that was clever, nice one Tim.

  • haha this song is so true <3

    ginger here :3

  • I wonder how many people stop listening to this before it gets to the ginger part :)

  • @vikingmjj - good point, I'm SO glad i managed to hold on past the first bit which sounded like James Blunt!

  • As a gin-ga, I fricken love this song! Go Tim Tim!

  • Ha, I thought he was gonna say "nigger."

  • @BobDoleismyBitch Same :P but I think that's the point xD

  • @BobDoleismyBitch that's the joke.

  • This song is amazing. At the beginning when he puts the emotion into it the its about "gingers" :L Class

  • LOL wait till coppercab hears this song,he'll be flaming it and so on XD

  • lmao epic

  • Its so funny that so many people dont get it! Its Brilliant.

  • Anyone who thinks he's being "racist" by this song is a total fool for the most part that "ginger" is not a race and HE'S FUCKING GINGER HIMSELF!

  • @mizzfuntime Or they're trolling, and succeeding at it.

  • @mizzfuntime nup. you're wrong.. ginger is a race.

  • @mizzfuntime

Really though, "races" don't actually exist. Racism is a social construct. You can draw the lines wherever you want.

  • @mizzfuntime At the school I used to go to they are making someone calling someone else ginger a racist, it is now considered a racist term... I do not know why...

  • @mizzfuntime I hope you're ginger or you missed the point of the song!

  • @mizzfuntime I agree, but when he says "ginger" he means "nigger". He had to replace the "N" word because people were accusing him of being racist, or so I've heard.

  • @iAmSynzs I personally will never believe that.

  • @iAmSynzs - Yeah, because black people get called "Fanta-pants" all the time, huh.

  • @flankspeed Perhaps if you used your common sense a little, you'd have come to the conclusion that maybe he censored any reference to black people as well.

  • @iAmSynzs thats bull. Otherwise this song wouldn't be nowhere as funny

  • @mizzfuntime nah, ginger aint a race. just a totaly different species.

  • @stevenlickbleach You are a fucking retarded ginger isn't a species its a fucking hair color i'm guessing you been takeing to many blows to the face from your dads dick. you need to shut the fuck up an go back to school.

  • @666CLOWNLOVE bahahahahaha rofl. your insights are so eye opening.

  • im sure this is called taboo lol but either way an absolutly amazing song

not that i have a man crush on tim minchin *cough* *cough*

  • @LeedsUtdForLife Huh? Did you mean the song is called taboo? The song is called prejudice. If that wasn't what you meant then sorry for wasting your time.

  • @lordabomity yeah i meant that i thought the song is called taboo and its ok, you havent wasted my time, awell no worries

  • @LeedsUtdForLife Ok =P

  • @LeedsUtdForLife He said that it was called prejudice. Perhaps he changed the title? His delivery seems to have improved a lot as well.

  • @LeedsUtdForLife You are right this song was called taboo originally, it was initally not released on any albums, howere he has revamped it and put it on his last release, the original version called taboo has a little bit less frillieness to it and i think that makes it better + on the original video you didnt have a load of people having fights about race in the comment :)

  • Why when there are comidians who use racist material who get away with it been let off when Tim is only singing a funny song about gingers and hes been attacked for it!?

One of my friends is ginger and we saw Tim live and this was the first song Tim performed and he loved it so if one ginger can find it funny why not everyone else?

  • yay gingers! ^_^ haha

  • Personally I prefer the live version (just piano)

  • "Stop being Racist to Gingers" from the public of ASNEM, MENSA for backwards people

  • Yeah, pretty much best song in history. Always cracks me up.

  • Why is a song about redhair inciting a debate over racism?

  • In the end he is just making un of all the racist-talking you are doing here guys... it is just no necessary... black skin color white skin color, yellow skin color... WHO cares? It is the person behind you can hate or like, not any color.

And he is making fun of the whole "I take everything serious"-attitude...

  • Racist? maybe look up the defenition of racist/racism? just a suggestion

  • Tim is awesome as always. I have done some covers; and also a tutorial for Inflatable You. Any pianists on here, let me know what you think

  • @raccoonlord yes, that's the joke.

  • This song - escpacially the chorus - reminds clearly of another song. Sadly I cannot remind that song :/

    Anyone else this impression?

  • @raccoonlord LOL SAME!! XD

  • @slayerboy1001 thats the idea

  • GINGER

    NIGGER

    ^^

  • I guess we're lucky there are no ginger niggers or we'd be totally fucked!

  • Wow brilliant song, like your take on racism and Prejudice

  • What makes it funnier is he's ginger himself. I love him. ^^

  • he never actually say the "N bomb" and SOOO many other people use it in SO many songs so what is the point of getting you but in a twist? Its like saying Jayz is racist! Look on the bright side of life damn it! XP

  • @knightofthesoul "if you really loved me" originally had the N word

  • Comment removed

  • @d952013 well why arent others branded for using that word or other racist comments in songs? The amount of shit I have heard from black people "spitting" shit about asains or whites "spitting" about black or asain "spitting" back at blacks. Im just so sick of it. At least Tim does it with a bit of humor. The amount of shit I have taken for being Korean. Do you know that feeling? If you dont then you dont have any right to say who is racist. Answer my question correctly.

  • @d952013 and i found that one funnier.

the previous line is "Racism and Ignorance" so i think the N word fits better then Bling.

  • they call him racist because he got in trouble for using "nigger" in a song

  • lmao, lighten up people! im ginger and its hilarious. i think all of his songs are genious.
