I just told what I heard. To my ears she sounds masculine. I heard the same sounds only from contralto singers....I didn't nean to be negative towards her, don't get me wrong. I like the way she sounds...
This is the best understanding that Death is mild here and means "schlafen." Made it her ambition to sing the low D and had trouble with it. This is some kind of an "athletic" mentality, which, IMO does not belong in art. Why would a woman strive to go to men's pitch?
A wonderful performance. Is this from my record? I can't remember. I think I have 2 versions now with Schumann-Heink, but Art has the Columbia...confound him!
Indeed is from your record! Wasn't sure if you wanted credit posted all over the world wide web....Woulda surprised us years ago, when recording the cassette this Schumann-Heink is from, to hear that thousands would later appreciate it!
She was the greatest contralto ever, had the largest repertoire possible, from big wagnerian roles to very florid coloratura. I began to love her at age 15,now 10years latter it's always the same thrill. Her SEGRETO aria is my favourite. Sigrid Onegin is also my darling.
Beautiful performance! Thanks for posting.

her low notes sound too masculine.

@toni7777ful Please define for me what a contralto is, then back up your statement with logical reasoning.

@minnie888444 Why do men strive to go to women's pitch? Don't question it, its art.

Thank you so much for sharing these old recordings... Relics!!
Excellent performance by Ernestine Schumann-Heink!! But I miss the piano - I don't think the strings suit this piece.e Just my taste.

Pass by! Oh, pass by!
Go away, fierce man of bone!
I am still young, go my dear!
And do not touch me.
Give me your hand, you beautiful and delicate form!
I am a friend, and am not come to punish.
Be of good cheer! I am not savage,
You will sleep softly in my arms. One of my favorites. This is the most accurate version I could find on You Tube thus far. Thank you.

Well, it's from 1919. Besides,it's not that bad, IMHO. And it makes you listen more carefully. And it creates a special atmosphere. Zdrówko :)
