why can't we like both classic and newer rap? i'm an 18-year-old white kid from Chicago, and i can listen to Wu-Tang to De La Soul to Odd Future to Jay-Z continuously...they each bring different things to the table and they each have a purpose, so how can you compare them?
Always remember when a m8 of mine brought me a copy of this album into my local boozer in '89, B-side was Rob Base Dj EZ-Rock - It Takes Two, good times and when Hip-Hop was still healthy.
I'm not exactly a hip-hop/rap fan (yet), but I'm really getting into it thanks to these guys. It helps that I recognize half of the samples. Some nice Steely Dan in this song.
@TheMadnessFlow I agree w/that statement. ATCQ is my favorite group and it started w/"Bonita Applebum" @Sam Goodies that got me to buy their 1st Album. De La Soul is like right behind them as far best Alternative Rap groups. This track right here is sampled from "Steely Dan" My mom played that album out when I was a toddler!
Its been so long since i heard this. Happy days driving in my mk 1 Golf, blasting this album out of the window. still sounds fantastic. Love it......:)
Check this... I used listen to this track back in '89 every morning while getting ready for school during my Junior year. I dedicated it to Dawn Sumpter, my girlfriend at the time over the school P.A. system. Trust and believe that I got some in the back of the Theater Arts building. Never fails! =)
OK obviously this is a classic, its so damn good. Oldskool hip hop was dope. But people who are in denial need to wake up, theres so much good hip hop these days. People just wanna be nostalgic, the songs from our teenage years are always gonna have a bigger place in our heart, and thats cool too! Peace, Love and Hip Hip to everyone
@madmandaniel Nice sentiment, but where is this good hip hop you speak of?? Not on MY radio that's for damn sure...(apart from those rizzle kicks chappies)
10 minutes ago my gf made me listen to drake's "headlines". i thought it was passable (as far as modern day hip pop goes)...but then i had to listen to some TCQ and DLS. -ears and brain returning to normalcy-
these lot were inaginative, different and CLEVER with it.This is a great album - todays 'hip hop' is reallly just brainless, misogynists talking about sex, money porn and nothing else -who fucking needs or wants it?They say music progresses -in this case its progressed backwards towards neandethal man
@MrScopal WORD FOR WORD.....today's 'HIP HOP POP' as I call it just has no real vibe to the old heads like de la / Gang Starr / A Tribe / Big daddy Kane. Well said!
God! I remember this now - I didn't even listen to it that much but I should go look for this. And Tribe Called Quest - just listened to them too. Wow.
Man, I never liked rap because of today's music. Stuff like 50 cent, Jay Z, Usher and others made me think that rap was the most crappy music genre. that how to rap book is dope but its just another way for all the fakes and the people that use this great hip hop for an image and to be unique and a bunch of peoplewill read it and think they know everything about it and people for some reason cant keep that to thereselves
This is one of the building block's that Rap/Hip Hop etc was founded upon...
Trust me, I have been alive long enough to see the loop. Obviously by some of the comments, some haven't.
As a female..the lyrics today in that genre above..~Well it offends me when they refer to women as 'Ho's, Diggas, Bitches' etc....and don't get me wrong, I am in my 50's and work with youths, so nothing shocks me..for some reason it never has??! (Yeah, I'm cool...lol)
@teatimecreams Agree wholeheartedly, the image and portrayal of females in alot of modern RnB rap is extremely negative and over sexualised, giving our young people both boys and girls the wrong perspective on themselves. I am a dance teacher in my late thirties, and stuggle to get kids to move but put on something they like and suddenly the girls turn into mini porn stars.
i was 19 when i bought this album summer 1990 it makes me want to blub now, All my younger friends think rap is utterly shit thanks to the pricks that have destroyed this beautiful arfform if I can point them to this and quest andpharcyde maybe all is not lost...
@KILLERSTROP I Had The Same Problem With Someone From My Age (16) He Was Like Fuck That I Aint Even Wanna Try To Listen It Sucks This Is Caused By The Music From Nowadays
i know its 10 dislikes out of 498 767 views(mid-2011) but what is wrong with those 10 people? they must have been abused as children to this song or had something horrible happen to them while it was playing...
@bradleyt1 i agree, golden age of hip hop late 80s early 90s, never again will we see such talent. de la soul did not compromise there integrity for nothing! pure genius. this album along with epmd's "strictly business" beastie boys "pauls boutiqe" and cypress hill's first LP are some of the most influential and creative sounds to be found anywhere! CLASSIC!
@Sue71 It's one of Steely Dan's best song in my book. Check it out if you really like music it's a must for your collection. I damn sure have it in mine. Man De la is the shiz!
@PEAKTYMEZBLUD True, but if people didn't buy it record comps would not have sold it. We make the muisc with what we buy. Wake up!!! Don't waste your money on settling on the lesser of to evils. De La for Life!!!
@twindwick - Nothing happened, the good stuff went back underground. When no one is paying attention, you can create timeless hip hop without worrying about market shares and residuals. There is great stuff out there, you just have to look harder
@legolas11795 exactly you just have to look for yourself. but you see most people want their music on the plate. they think music is a product equal to soup can where you go to a grocery and you just buy it. anyway cya
@legolas11795 Find me some underground stuff that's close to being that good. The radio shit is for retards and the underground, althought they have good intentions, is boring as fuck.
Sadly, this album would NEVER happen today... Forget about the genius of the lyrics and the forward looking attitude, no one would EVER get the sample clearances these days.. This album and the Beasties Pauls Boutique are the twin towers of brilliant hip hop production. Prince Paul and the Dust Brothers.... AND, both of them from NY!!!!! and in the case of De La, Amityville... I grew up 5 miles away!!!
@swswa221 read that shit. good book, kinda helps expand your horizon on how to write the lyrics, but was mostly just quotes from interviews with the rappers on w/e subject about rapping. i'd recommend reading it though
@twindwick When it comes too rap, I don`t even pay attention to new artists. I rather listen too the old school shit, that I have A LOT of good memories from.
No doubt in my mind: Hip Hop was at its apex between 1988 and about 1992. The Beastie Boys (Paul's Boutique), A Tribe Called Quest, Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, Stetsasonic, even 3rd Bass was alright. NWA, The Jungle Brothers, Ice-T, Eric B. and Rakim and of course, De La Soul were all really cool. These days, not so much. I can't explain it. It's just not the same somehow. Nas was cool and so were the Wu Tang Clan, but otherwise, I just go back to my old CD's.
@nightjammer It`s sad because most rappers that came from that era have either gone flat, boring or just straight dissapointing. Most have tried too conform to the newer sound of rap, and it just sucks. Now, I do like a couple of new school shit, I`ll even admit I like 3 Lil Wayne songs, but those 3 songs I like are probably the only songs by him that are worth 2 shits.
Had this song playing while i was getting ready for prom my senior year! Was with the most perfect girl at the time. Got invited to go again this year but doesn't feel the same for some reason. If only the replay button could replay parts of life too... :(
When I first met my girl, I quoted a line from this song (and added a line of my own); I looked her right in the eye, grabbed her ass and said to her "greetings girl, and welcome to my world of panty love...". we've been married for 8 years now!
Im 17 and my car only plays tapes, so I bought 3 feet high and rising on tape to play in my car because its one of my fav albums of all time! Anyways its always blasting out of my car when I go to and from school I don't care if it ain't mainstream I spread old school hip-hop everywhere I go!!! Love this track I'll be listening to the tape all summer till I get sick of it (which I probably won't) lol
just listen to it and stop comparing it to the stuff kids listen to now... Your parents didnt like hip hop and now you dont like your kids music... in 20 years the adults will be saying the same thing about music then... I love this music and new rap and bluegrass and classical and fucking house music... Get along people... One love
@twindwick I'm sorry if I was a little irritated in that comment; it just frustrates me a little bit when people say that hip hop is 'dead'. I've been a die hard fan for years and still cannot stand this. Anyways, some cool artists that are still keeping it real are Shad - K'naan - k-os - Blu - Fashawn - Blue Scholars - J-Live - Zion I - Classified - Kenn Starr - Median - Supastition - Little Brother - The list can go on and on but I truly believe that hip-hop is doing very well right now
@bubbadude117 Very true. There is alot of good stuff out there - people just aren't on it. If people want real hip hop they have to look for it! There is alot of rubbish in the charts that has never seen hip hop. People think just cos someone raps in a song it is hip hop. Hip hop is not just about rapping and i wish people kinda got that. Fed up of trying to educate people that hip hip is alive and kicking if you look for it! Shad is a real talent btw
@gfunkenterprises Yeah I thank the old school rap like De La Soul, Public Enemy, Wu-Tang, ATCQ, etc. because they open the way to real hip-hop; I'm sure everyone who's into underground hip-hop now got into it from something old school like this stuff
forget the feet Im just high and rising

@PEAKTYMEZBLUD True, but if people didn't buy it record comps would not have sold it. We make the muisc with what we buy. Wake up!!! Don't waste your money on settling on the lesser of to evils. De La for Life!!!
Darcsav3r 8 months ago
@twindwick - Nothing happened, the good stuff went back underground. When no one is paying attention, you can create timeless hip hop without worrying about market shares and residuals. There is great stuff out there, you just have to look harder
legolas11795 8 months ago 3
@legolas11795 exactly you just have to look for yourself. but you see most people want their music on the plate. they think music is a product equal to soup can where you go to a grocery and you just buy it. anyway cya
akis723 8 months ago

LOGIC42369 8 months ago

@nightjammer big L and big pun are fucking tight tho, and if ur looking for a philosophical genius rapper then u cant get better than tupac
the 90's was tight anyway
its nowadays that is shite
PS3xMedia 8 months ago
@nightjammer It`s sad because most rappers that came from that era have either gone flat, boring or just straight dissapointing. Most have tried too conform to the newer sound of rap, and it just sucks. Now, I do like a couple of new school shit, I`ll even admit I like 3 Lil Wayne songs, but those 3 songs I like are probably the only songs by him that are worth 2 shits.

i love 2 note samples, for some reason they make sick songs.
just like craig mack's "flava in ya ear"
i cant figure out how 2 noted make such sick songs but i dont really care

Love this track I'll be listening to the tape all summer till I get sick of it (which I probably won't) lol
patriciamisslilmex 8 months ago
just listen to it and stop comparing it to the stuff kids listen to now...

Anyways, some cool artists that are still keeping it real are Shad - K'naan - k-os - Blu - Fashawn - Blue Scholars - J-Live - Zion I - Classified - Kenn Starr - Median - Supastition - Little Brother - The list can go on and on but I truly believe that hip-hop is doing very well right now
bubbadude117 9 months ago
@bubbadude117 Very true. There is alot of good stuff out there - people just aren't on it. If people want real hip hop they have to look for it! There is alot of rubbish in the charts that has never seen hip hop. People think just cos someone raps in a song it is hip hop. Hip hop is not just about rapping and i wish people kinda got that. Fed up of trying to educate people that hip hip is alive and kicking if you look for it! Shad is a real talent btw
gfunkenterprises 9 months ago
@gfunkenterprises Yeah I thank the old school rap like De La Soul, Public Enemy, Wu-Tang, ATCQ, etc. because they open the way to real hip-hop; I'm sure everyone who's into underground hip-hop now got into it from something old school like this stuff
bubbadude117 9 months ago
@bubbadude117 I thank you for thanking them
