I just hope everyone that sees this video can see the value in these items, especially the large bowl. To think, it is marked as property of the Emperor and most likely was used by him/his family at some point within the walls of the Forbidden City. Absolutely fantastic.
@InvaderP4nda some of the people on this show are about 25 or so...or they were on the show at that age, i mean 25 years of learning that kind of stuff? and you would have to exclude ages 1-11 or so..so yeah, im sure it takes a special type of person to memorize all that information...
@mopryIScool Keep in mind that this is his specialty, much like you choosing a major when you go to college. It's his job to know about these sort of items.
@fightcha20 Most of the appraisers on this show have been collecting, dealing, and auctioning antiques within their specialties for decades. What they have is more than what you can find in a book, they have decades worth of real world experience.
Its shock! if you had an ugly piece of carved wood or whatever draged it to the roadshow to get valued thinking you might get a few hundred you would never believe a stranger telling you it worth hundreds of thousands unless they had the cash in their hand thrusting it in yours and saying "let me buy it here is 700K!"
For all of you that say this woman's response to seeing her property appraised at $700,000-$1,070,000 was inappropriate or abnormal, I have set up an appointment for you all to see the very best psychiatrist near you.
@jad3948 Could NOT agree more! Her reposeful, matured reception of the news is completely inappropriate! Where is the vulgarity and the violence which drives the attention-spans of today's mindless masses?
@Ultranothing lol reposeful?? i would say her reaction was more indifferent (possibly a side-effect of her antipsychotic medication?). i even sensed a little disappointment while she heard the prices, realizing her brother would want to sell "their" collection
either way, i'd suggest her brother use all the proper and necessary safety precautions when making their "decision"
@jad3948 Well I would say that it's probably unfair to judge the words or actions of a person who has suddenly found themselves staring down the barrel of a dozen television cameras and surrounded by hundreds of people while she discovers that she's potentially become a millionaire.
That's just how I see it. Of course, it doesn't negate the fact that she DOES seem rather underwhelmed by the news. But who knows how she might have reacted is she wasn't so nervous.
@Ultranothing "Property rights," eh? Cultural patrimony is often traded away from subaltern to colonialist in arm's-length transactions, would you say?
@EwoktheMoid Who said that? What we do know, in the case of this 1st phase Ute Navajo textile, is that is WAS taken care of. Quite well, in fact.
And you can rest easy knowing that, through the aforementioned property rights and free-market trade, this blanket now resides in a museum, where it can be respected and appreciated by all.
I wanted her to go scream or go crazy. She must have already had an idea of their worth because people with far less valuable items go much crazier when their items are appraised.
they were items her father gave her, maybe they remind her of her father who she loved she probley shocked on the value, her love for her father is worth more than money, maybe she already has a decent life, my grandfather gave me a gold watch he got from his work, and im not well off in the least but i'll never sell it because it reminds me of him
I have this train set called the American Flyer from the 1940's-1950's. My grandfather, who died 2 days after I was born, bought this set in around 1958 for a birthday present for my uncle at about $350. It was handed down to my dad, who had forgotten to take it with him when he moved out in 1981. My grandfather took the set and decided to garage sell it for $350. He (thankfully) sold it to an elder train collector. Now dad got the set back for about $600. We had looked up the price of one .....
.....train (the caboose I think) and the retail price of that is $1100. The whole set (even the fully functional micro record player) together is worth $56,000-$80,000; that is what the man at the Allen County antiques roadshow said at the fairgrounds.
her reaction at @ 2:43 is priceless, hope the family decided to keep some. thanks for posting the part from 3:43, which I don't remember airing on the show.... one of my favorite all time ARS moments!
@metalmidget89 It's one of the Massachusetts accents. His is a bit unusual though. Sounds like he has moved around throughout his life and picked up bits and pieces from different regions.
@Doggieman1111 Yeah, well shock will do that to a person.... My parents have a few large pieces of furniture, purchased by my paternal great-grandparents, which are well over 100 years old. I've seen them practically every day of my life and can GUARANTEE I would have a similar reaction if they turned out to be worth that kind of money. Obviously they're stunning pieces...but I'm prrrrretttttty confident most people wouldn't automatically think "game-changer" just by looking at them.
It prolly isn't worth as much as the painting at auction though, as they tend to go much higher than anything else you can sell for what people insure them as beforehand.

not to mention what it's going to do to her living overhead! @dcpassarell
She's probably had to sell some just to cover security and insurance rates.
At least on the up side, if she parts with one, she'll have enough money to have affordable duplicates made of the one's it would be too hard to hold on to or keep out of a vault.
@Heusdur Not likely, now that it has been appraised, and on TV no less, assuming shes a run of the mill person and family, there is likely no way she can keep and insure them, short of a bank vault.
Back when I was 10 I used to go into the house of this old woman on our street & steal bits of her stuff- she was totally demented & never noticed -no-one believed anything she said anyway. She died when I was 14.
A few years later at University & decided to have her jewellery that I still had valued- turned out it was rare antique stuff worth over £50k! I thought about giving it to charity, but used it to fund a superb student lifestyle instead- 3 yrs of drink, drugs& posh student girls!

@jimmyPain2121 "if i didn't know it was so valuable id feel ripped off if someone gave it to me for free"
Dude, it's hand-carved SOLID JADE. It's no-ones fault but your own that you can't appreciate anything but beer and Axe body sprays.
