its your timing chain check if you got metal shavings in your oil if you do you will need a new sprocket and a timing chain-- cost me $400 to fix i have a 2002 400ex it happened to me
im hoping youll respond to this, my 400 has slowly been gettin louder and louder making that same exact noise. did yours smoke when you gave it gas at all?
@offroadram20001 there is a problem with your cam chain man i recomend you stop using your quad or else it will go out of time and the piston is gonna crash the valves, the adjustment is behind the cylinder on the right side, by the exhaust headers. mine didnt smoke! you might have to buy new piston rings to fix that... hope this helps!!
that sounds rly bad. i friend my hole top end my valves snapped piston cracked. cam bearing fell apart when we got them out. cracked the head. it was bad
check ur oil , check the timing chain, and adjust the valves and while ur at it check the piston against the cylinder wall if you can see any gap at all get new rings
Mine made same noise believe it was the sloppy chain and or the decompressor on the stock cam i have stage 2 hotcam and new chain installed and sounds like new
@stickfishy big reds were only made as 4 srtokes my freind the 250r is the only 2 stroke next time know what u are talking about before u run your mouth
i took it to the local honda dealer, turns out it was the cam chain, the time chain broke, the piston crushed my valves, luckly the piston didnt brake lol
i was going to say replace your cam chain and adj. your valves lol....i would have been right...if you found out faster it would have saved you about 600 lol....if not more
Geez!!!! Yours sounds way worse than mine. Same sort of sound but way worse.
I had planned in advance to have mine listened to by a professional. But I did a little tuning and it stopped. Then I heard it again before I canceled. So I took it in and nothing, no sound. Turned the idle down, let it sit overnight and it did it. He thought it was the cam chain. I think it's nothing on mine yet... just slack plus additional slack at low idle. I could lay a finger on the throttle and make it stop.
How are your muffler bearings? Did you remember to gap the oil and take the summer air out of the tires and put in winter air? Maybe your power band is worn out. Im just kidding. Actually your timing chain has stretched past its useable limit. The noise you hear is the slack in the chain slaping your chain guides. If you dont take care of that you WILL jump a tooth on the cam which means your piston will hit your valves. That means more money to fix.
damn hahaa i ignored that noise and kept riding, last week it got wrecked. now its being fixed, i hope the piston didnt smash the valves, thx 4 your comment...
@jerzgirl514 actually there are muffler bearings that aint a joke its the little gasket thing on the headers where they meet the head and also where the stock muffler joins the headers
yea im in the process now i had to get all new valves and shit and i got a 440 kit its costin me like 700 only cause i got a friend to do it all for me but if anything prob round 1000
sound like the timing chain tensioner was broke
