The one on the remastered movie is eons better than this one. It has reverb mixed in and the vocals and everything sound so good. It's a shame no on YouTube has that exact version.
i kinda wish plant wouldn't have sung on this. his voice is an instrument that doesn't belong in this piece. this imo is better than any other led zeppelin song, i've heard bootlegs of other "san francisco" parts but I think this version is the best
for some reason this clip of 2 minutes and fifty seconds just summarises the whole led zeppelin experience for me ....... still cant put my finger to it isit the drums the guitar the voice the bass or all of it coming together or is it just sheer ingenuityor improv skills or the ability to transport me to the time even my parents were kids or ability to get high without actaully taking ane hallucinogen ..... or all of the above i AM DAZED AND CONFUSED FOR SO LONG ITS NOT EVEN FUNNY ANEMORE haha
I would have ended the video when the musical flow actually comes to a stop which is during the beginning of the violin solo. I wish I could tell you what part exactly but not easy to describe. But I'm not complaining when anyone uploads a Led Zeppelin video.
I don't wanna have to make some cliche, hyperbolic statement about the awesomeness of this band, as it's been done, and we all (I think) get how great they were.
But there is something about this music Zeppelin creates that is almost... innate. Same with their performance of No Quarter in TSRTS.
A feeling is created, as if, should you have felt those feelings first, and could amplify them into audio, this is what is would sound like.
So yeah, somewhat hyperbolic, but there's something in it.
@SqueezeMyLemon68 Count me in. Plant in MSG in 1973 somehow left you feeling like you had watched a stripper...even though somehow he never actually took off any clothes. I limit how often I watch TSRTS footage because I don't want to ever burn myself out on it and/or dilute the effect.
the sound of this puts me into a state nothing else can compare to. its indescribable. its like some dark, ancient, archaic melody that just grabs you, like your witnessing time change, a grand battle emerging before you in the halls of time. and when jimmy starts that entrancing, phasing riff it explodes into pure ecstasy and you know then, you are witnessing gods, the mighty zeppelin...
@xx18999 I have never known how to express my emotions when I listen to this, but this hits it on the nail. You sir, have read my thoughts and put em into words.
i love how at 0:12 when Jonesy plays a note and Bonzo's just like "Nah man what's wrong with you?" and then Jonesy's like "What? I thought that was okay" but Bonzo is already in his own little world
@DangVegan well its not really that jones plays a bad note. page always goes off on these improvisational talents. they're just looking at each other because they dont know what the hell page is doing. hence bonham putting fills in on the start of a bar lol
Probably - not, FOR SURE - the best 3 minutes by the Zeps. It's wonderful the way JPJ and Bonzo were chatting at the beginning, or the readiness of their time-changes or dynamics.
THEY WERE, THEY ARE, THEY'LL BE THE HAMMER OF THE GODS.
"If your going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair, If your going to San Francisco, You're gonna meet a lotta gentle people there, everywhere, everywhere, everywhere, everywhere, I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW"
incredible, best performance of it, i am obsessed with that part
The guitar is obviously what inspired Achilles Last Stand, I'm not a Zep expert, but I'm willing to bet that they never played San Fransisco again in concert after ALS came out on Presence, and among many other possible reasons, it seems that playing the same chord progression in ALS would be the most plausible. And the bashing of my opinion no doubt commences.....
@TelefonicaRR Jimmy broke a finger somewhere around 74-75. He could not play some songs, Dazed and Confussed was one that was dropped from their set list. Achillies Last Stand came out in 76.
@TelefonicaRR Well yeah they stopped playing it after 1975 but because they stopped playing Dazed which is the song that contains it. But you're right it does sound like a slower version of ALS.
Yeah this has a name...it's called Achilles Last Stand. It's a shame more people don't listen carefully to the actual music of Zeppelin. Just cus the lyrics and key change you can't even recognize one of Zeppelin's greatest hits!
@LeadBlimp this concert was in '73... Achilles was recorded in '76. Achilles has some parts that borrow from this... but this is definitely not Achilles Last Stand.
Lets break it down. First, thats a good thought. the only thing is that the album presence came out in 1976, after this performance. san francisco could have been an inspiration for achilles last stand though, they are similar
jimmy page didnt just randomly decide to play it they have played it in dazed and confused both legs of the 1973 tour, but this was around the time when it was close to completely matured.. jus listen to their performance at offenburg germany in march '73 and you can hear a big difference. i personaly like the version at offenburg bettr..
@Conaan70 Led Zeppelin is probably my favorite band but they are not better than the Beatles. The Beatles arent better than them either. They are both atop the mountian. Saying one is better than the other is like saying blue is better than red
@Conaan70 Better than the Beatles I agree. But not better than Pink Floyd or U2. Equal but not better. In other words I agree there is no band better than them nor will there ever be, but IMO two bands are equal with them.
I have a Les Paul Cherry Sunburst in honor of my true guitar god, Jimmy Page. The very first time I ever heard this, I too was totally blown away...and I still am each and every time I hear it. It brings me to my knees. The transformation of the Scott McKenzie's happy, hippie song full of love and joy to this - total darkness, Plant's howling vocals and Jimmy's unreal guitar playing - use of the wah and fuzz through his Marshalls. Truly fucking Epic. The best guitar tone I have ever heard.
The improvistion here never fails to raise the hair on my arms! Almost haunting! As if these musicians are vampires who have spent all of eternity studying and playing there instruments. Also, It 's great to see so many other people who understand the genius behind Led Zeppelin.
@zeppyfan1977 : Agreed. Every time I get the hairs rising on my arms. When Plant looks straight at the camera it's almost scary! LOVE IT TO BITS! Fuck the haters!
@zeppyfan1977 this is a great clip and i also thought they were improvising, but i heard a bootleg of this track and they played it pretty much the same as this performance...
I'd say they're talking about when Bonham is supposed to start to play, cause when he start, John-Paul Jones is doing a head sign to say it's alright:P, but I'm not 100% sure.. and sorry for my english, I'm from Quebec!

is it called brushing? someone said it's some sort of spanish technique....
if you watch a performance of "babe i'm gonna leave you" with jimmy page and robert plant in the 1990's, he does it in that version as well.
i don't know what it is, but it sounds amazing.
i think i watch this video at least twice a day. i have to stop.

it's playing with the fingers, just as simple as that ;)
My fav version!
this is the unedited version, sounds with a higher pitch and it's way faster than the original, I have both <3
