To add to dclgreer's comment, .454 Casull is not a round you shoot at the range to have a good time... there's a very obvious purpose for guns like the Ruger Alaskan: stopping thousand pound bears from killing you.
If anyone wants to know what it feels like to shoot the 454 Alaskan, hold a 2x4 in your bare hands and have someone smack it with a baseball bat. That's a pretty fair estimation I think. Put another way, I don't ever end up shooting very much 454 at the range in a single session.
the way I see it if by some miracle you miss what you are shooting at the muzzle flash will blind them, burn all their hair off and deafen them all at the same time!
44 Special or 44 Magnum? in a CQB home defense situation?
PS:GLASERS BLUE TIPS on 44M
i personally think the 44M is good at home defense with that round as my father has already proven it(Boy being a dirty harry like police is enough to prove that though he said it wont remove your head off like clint said................)
It's a good thing that range was sturdy, because if it was not, that thing would have knocked it down! I've shot a ported XD40 at my local indoor range and it rearranged my glasses, and I've been in there when a .357 mag which was mixed in with .38s got touched off by accident and I was afraid for my life! I simply cannot fathom a short barreled .454 going off inside any structure. Nice video.
I think it would just end up beating the Desert Eagle platform to death. They are nearly impossible to keep running without breakage with lighter cartridges like .44 mag, let alone the insane stuff like .50 AE or .454 Casull.
I've been thinking of buying one of these. You just made up my mind, man! This would go beautifully with my Puma M92 in .454 Casull, and it's stainless steel as well! Thanks for posting this.
you are welcome, FYI I don't know how availablity in your area is for the Alaskans but I looked off and on for 9 months before I found one at a local sporting goods store, sure glad I waited instead of getting another revolver. I am very satisfied with it, only downside is cost of ammo!
I agree ammo is pricey, which is why I never shoot my Puma. It's a damn shame, because I love that rifle, and it was a gift from a very dear friend of mine.
I just shot one of these babies, rented, at my local indoor range. Magtech 260 gr. FMJ, and OH MY GOD! This thing is not only FUN, but VERY PAINFUL on ungloved hands! That was about five hours ago, and my hand is still swollen and hurting. This is definitely on my "get now" list.
I shot a box of 20 240gr Magtech in my Alaskan, the recoil was not too bad, as a matter of fact, the above video is the 240gr Magtech. I bought a box each of 240 and 260gr. for the next range session. 45 colt loads can be very mild and pleasant to shoot out of the Alaskan. Vladpryde, out of curiousity how is availability of Alaskans in your area? have you seen any 44 Magnum Alaskans yet?

I agree. 20 rounds of 260gr. MagTech is about all I can do.

when hes done he'll probably grab a cold beer... To reduce the swelling on his hand!

I bought the xd45 first... but the Ruger Alaskan in 454 is the ultimate camping, trail, survival packer.

Man, the muzzle flash on that first shot was way cool. Went out like five or six feet, and was swirling.
