  • About your question of "mochi or money" - hmmmm. ( ^ o ^ ) - Seriously, mochi EVERY time! Rice is the source of life. Money is, at best, only second place.

Peace and happiness to those who are still at home in Japan (homesick!). Be safe, all!

    暖より

  • こっれぽっち可愛い!!

  • i live in Brazil and my grandparents are japanese. So, since I was a kid I remember receiving an amount of money in this time of the year, but at that age, I didn't know this was a tradition in Japan...teehee! xD Today I've learned a lot of vocabulary and other interesting things with your video, Miyabi! Thank u for your hard work! Merry X'mas & a wonderful 2012 for you!! :)

  • Is there a reason why the amounts stated are not a nice round number? Or is that just the average amount? It would look kinda weird to receive exactly 2,888 yen but that's just my opinion.

  • @LoveWillB4U Ah~!! I can understand what you mean! But that is just a going rate one of NHK programs showed. So we have to take it "around numbers", I think. I'm going to give OTOSHIDAMA to children in round number, but some might give 2,012 yen or good number for them. ^-^

  • @LoveWillB4U

Because it's probably the AVERAGE of the people they surveyed and got the numbers from. It's not like every Elementary school student gets EXACTLY 2888 yen. lol.

  • ahaha! I guess we are kinda alike ^_^

  • Well, I just saw your soba video. I guess I got my answer. Thank you for leaving me my answer in advance :)

  • @WatashiNoOmocha OMG!! I just recommended you watching that my video...!! ahaha! Sorry!! ^0^ <3

  • Giving money for New Year is the same as Chinese do (or did?) on Chinese New Year. I always got money in red envelops when I was little.

I have a question. I was told that one of your believes says it would be lucky to eat noodles on New Year day. Is this true?

  • @WatashiNoOmocha Yeah, you are right. ^^

I think you mean soba noodles we eat on New Year's EVE? I made a 年越しそば [toshikoshi soba] video a few weeks ago. Please check it if you have time. ^-^

  • I can't have both? Tehe. I would like a little of both, maybe not so much otoshidama and also a little of rice cakes. Thank you for sharing Miyabi-chan! :D

  • @KagomesSelf Haha! I'd like both too! ^^ Thank you for watching and the comment! ^0^

  • I learnt a lot from this. Thank you!

  • @USJbroly Thank you for watching and the comment! (^0^)/

  • Excellent video! Well done/well thought out/and engaging as usual :) Loved it!!!

Please get a nice microphone if you can, or use a "pop filter" to clean up the voice parts. You deserve high quality :)

  • @shenzishenzi Hahaha! I'll!! Victor also recommends me always! "Pop filter"? I didn't know that! Thank you for giving me the advice and the nice comment! Very Merry Christmas to you and your family!

  • That going rate is really high!

  • @General2528342 I agree with you! Thank you for the comment! ^0^

  • I wish there was a going rate for the cash amount to give kids these days! I'd have a lot of money keke... but I also think receiving rice cakes would be nice because of the meaning behind it.

  • @Lilamente Yeah, it was believed that the god soul resided in the special rice cakes, so if you ate it you would get good luck and perfect health! Hehe! ^0^ I broke my health last month and couldn't do anything I wanted to and realized how important good health is! I'd like (prefer) special rice cakes! :D

  • Happy Holidays! Wow that is a lot of money for someone in Junior High-school.

I thought I would share our family tradition/custom with you. Every Christmas Eve we each get 1 gift. The gift is always a new pair of pyjamas. We wear the new pyjamas to sleep that night for good luck. ^_^

  • @mysticdragon38 Wow! So cool! Is it a custom of your country that to wear new pyjamas to sleep that night for good luck? ^0^

  • mmmm rice cake!!!

  • @IlMoonlightlI (*^-^)_〇 <= A special rice cake for you!

  • OMG. I love this video! Thank You!

  • @patnchrisnmary Thank you for the comment! I'm glad to hear that! (=^・^=)

  • Excellent video, JM! Favorited!

  • @Gimmeaflakeman Thank you very much for your help! (=^・^=)

  • wow .... in germany, children just get money from older relations at their birthdays or on christmas :D :D

new years eve is mostly used to celebrate .... and for teenagers to drink a lot of alcohol xD xD

  • @xxsweetyflowerxx I didn't know your country, Germany, has a custom order relations give money to children (Is that custom?)!! ^0^

Aggg...!? Teenagers celebrate New Year's Eve to drink alcohol???(^0^) Hahaha! If they did in Japan, they might be arrested~! ^0^

  • @JustMiyabi well....thei either give some presents or money..... but mostly, grandparents (or other relations) don't really know what the child want to have .. so thei give money and the child can buy something by himself : )

it's sad but true .... in germany you can drink slight alcohol, like beer or wine, with 16 .... and many teenagers asked thei older friends to buy hard stuff like liquor .... so, you can often see at TV that teenagers drink untill thei have to be transfared into a hospital

  • @xxsweetyflowerxx I see! I can understand grandparents wouldn't be sure what children want, and think that to give money is better than to give things which children might not want! ^0^

Oh! I didn't know 16 year's old children are allowed to drink some alcohol in Germany! We are allowed that when reaching the age of 20. ^^ Thank you for letting me know about your country! (^0^)/

  • @JustMiyabi yeah I also think so :D no problem...you are very welcome ^^

  • WOW I am Japanese, but I always and ALWAYS learn from your videos!! Amazing.. thank you so much for educating us!! xxx p.s. I want money otoshidama lol

  • @ozzy78 Hi Oz! ^-^ Thank you for the comment! Japanese children are really lucky to get such a big money and can start a New Year with happy feelings! When I was a child, I really really loved this season because I got some nice Christmas gifts on Christmas Day, and a week later I could buy toies/books/stationeries I had been wanting with OTOSHIDAMA! ^0^

  • Thank you for the good informational video on the way New Year is celebrated in Japan.

  • I'd like rice cakes with money inside. XD

  • @Blargmeister1 Hahaha! Funny! Me too! ^0^

  • @supercross1985 Hehehe. ^0^ This season is the happiest time for Japanese children. To get Christmas gifts on 25th and a week later from that, they get bog money, OTOSHIDAMA! In other word, for us, their parents, this season is......LOL! ^w^

  • gah!!! I wish we had that here, Id love to get money like that!!! :D Thanks much for the video!!! ^^b

  • @MANNY100123 Haha! ^0^ Japanese children are really lucky to get such a big money on New Year's, besides getting Christmas gifts a week before ! We, being in a position to give Christmas gifts and OTOSHIDAMA (cash gift for kids during New Year's), are feeling "Awwww....!" this season! haha! ^0^

  • I would take the money ^^

  • @kawaiijack Hahaha! o(*^▽^*)o Thank you for letting me know that! You are very honest! ^0^

  • I would prefer a rice cake, it´s made to eat. money however is only paper.

Thank you for the lesson Miyabi san. Enjoy your sunday and upcoming week with the family. merry christmas also, better wish it now in case I don´t have internet in the following days-might go away during christmas.

  • @pekinobo OH, you wouldn't have internet some days? Western people normally do that? I made a Christmas video though...(When I should upload it?) ^0^

  • @JustMiyabi If I go away from my home then I don´t have any internet or computer at all where I´m going to. Some people live in different towns then our parents and relatives so during christmas and new year we meet during these days.

  • @pekinobo Oh, I see! ^0^ We Japanese also meet relatives who live in different towns during New Year's holidays (We don't have long Christmas holidays like western people have). Take care and enjoy this season!

  • @JustMiyabi Children in school has 2 weeks holiday during this time.

Enjoy yours with your family Miyabi san.

  • Special rice cakes!

  • @RabidIceWeasel Me too! (^0^)♪ But, the amount of money, children get during New Year's...hahaha! ^0^

  • おもしろいです。ありがとう!

  • @kirisutonosubete どうもありがとうございます! そう言って頂けると、嬉しいです!^0^

  • thank you for the educational videos if i had to choose the money or the special rice cakes to be happy i would choose the rice cakes because that person made them for me with love money isn't everything.

  • @MrJoshuathedragon It was believed the soul of the god resided into the rice cakes, so if you eat it, you would get good luck and perfect health all the year. ^0^ Yeah, love, good luck and perfect health are more important than money for me too! ^-^

  • お金~! ToT

  • do I get one?

  • @AntoneX6 ( ^-^)_0 Here you are!

  • omochi oiishi desu ka

  • @thekemosavyshow Yeah, rice cake is yummy. I like it and prefer dipping it in きなこ [soybean flour] or 砂糖醤油 [sugar and soy sauce]. I like to add it to みそ汁 [miso soup] and お汁粉 [sweet red-bean paste soup] too .
