I flew the Raven in the US Army, as well as a few other guys in my unit. Fact, that ugly little bird saved my ass one day. I was on an IED sweep, on foot along side the road looking for them. None of us saw one about 150 meters up the road. At the time we had a Raven recon mission scouting ahead for us. The trigger man freaked at the site of our UAV, blew the IED & ran long before we were in the kill zone. So yeah UAV's are useful. I might have walked right up to that IED, it was well hidden.

i fly UAVs for the us army. we are so restricted by red tape and bullshit ( comitatus act) that we spend the first week of training learning how if we saw a murder while doing a training exorcise we cant do shit about it the tapes cant be used in court we cant be eyewitness and we cant even tell the police what we saw. because people are so bats shit scared the government is watchingvthem like big brother or some crap we dont have near the capability for that or the intent.

Sorry I have to respond to the others... War will be waged with or without unmanned vehicles. Intel against citizens would occur with or without the same. The use of UAV's is a discipline of decreasing the manpower loss by minimizing our human force in the field. I'd rather have precision weaponry than carpet bombing, and rather have UAV's than human soldiers at risk. If you have moral qualms, have it with the war, not the technology used.

Actually, it's only used for surveillance. So, someone could use it to search for lost hikers, do surveillance before and after a hurricane, and any other peace loving mission. How is that wrong? Does saving lives disgust you?

the reason I felt so disgusted was that military use was mentioned so very often and equipping the "vehicle" with granade-launchers doesn't really sound like saving lives to me. :/
