  • DL, tu dois regretter cette époque?

  • Lockwood is wonderful Magma tooo Thats Music Love Life!!

  • Magma comes to The Netherlands !!! (may 22 Nijmegen Music Meeting festival)

  • Piano? These guys R machines- the best. Maybe U R very young? the kb's used in a percussive style- limited & "dry". The italian musical term is "secco"- a technique developed since stravinksy. & people remain stuck, prejudiced against stravinsky's 'dry' piano works... <3 •

this particular style- limited & repetitious- is famous from modern german composer Carl Orff, who Magma always got compared to in the day. Orff's percussive "Carmina" cycles' structures & humors show in Magma

  • I think Leipaa's comments hit the mark. But it's important to note that this was a show meant to highlight Lockwood, and the percussion, keyboards and even vocals are downplayed to bring Lockwood to the fore.

Since this is the early 90s, Magma hasn't even reformed yet, and is still assumed dead, with Vander doing mostly Offering and solo stuff, plus occasional flashback Magma pieces, but no new Magma compositions until the late 90s. All in all, a unique but not so important Magma curiosity.

  • I do think that Bernard Paganotti was not played down at all. His bass was on fire. The strap rod flanked Roger Jaccobacci 5 that he was playing absolutely is a menance though!

  • the sound of the instruments may not be so good but to listen to the music of Magma you have to concentrate your attention on rythm, they could play MDK with Playskool instruments, it would kick ass, for sure !! The music of Magma is so rich and so clear, it may take years and years to know how to listen to their music. Magma for life.

  • Now that I see this vid again it looks pretty goofy. The keyboards are like a cheap Casio or something, Christian is back to playing a three piece kit that looks like he borrowed it from a 12 year old, and Didier is playing chords on his violin like he wishes he had a Les Paul. Oh, and it's obviously the early 90's because everyone is attired like they're auditioning for Seinfeld.

Still fun to see them between "now" and "then". Paganotti's bass looks wicked too.

  • A 3 pc. like a 12 year olds? Right, you don't understand the drums in this band with this man playing them.

In this concert it is 5 pieces. He had given up one of the rack toms for good, it seems and the rest of the drums were always 'small' jazz sizes. THE classic Gretsch drum set in those sizes. For what it's worth.....

  • Magma intime.

  • Sorry folks, but the dull keyboards are annoying here - I think there are better versions than this one...

  • I agree. The keyboardist sounds like he's tired.

  • idunno, sounds good to me.......imagine if [you] had to do that...lol.

  • Simon Goubert is also a drummer as well. He probably has played keyboards to a compostional degree.

  • I really must be tone deaf; I am a keyboard player and I can't really hear the "ice cold" synth sound.

  • Korg M1 synthesizer...

  • it's not only the sound of the keys, but primarily the guy playing it. no groove, no feeling, no atmosphere - just lame.

  • Oh, I love Didier Lockwood!!! And I always have fun with this section of MDK...whenever they play it live, it's a real headbanger! (How fast can -you- sing "ziss unt etnah"? Stella can always sing it faster!)

Is it just the sound quality, or has Klaus lost a bit of his vocal power? I hope it's just the sound...

  • Comment removed

  • actually it's Patrick Gauthier on keybords who played in Magma in the seventies

  • It's funny how Vander looks perpetually young and fit on his vids through 84, and now in early 90s he looks like the same heavy old guy he does today.

My theory is that he visited his home planet while on hiatus in the late 80's. It only took a few years in Earth time, but in Vander's galaxy the time passed more quickly.

  • that seems like a plausible explanation. or maybe this vid is from the late 90s and not the early 90s

  • @Leipaa Vander can't be that old. He should be about 62. (I think he started when he was 22?)

  • Vander is on a level all his own. To me, the most amazing thing about him is the notes he doesn't play. So much nuance in his drumming.

  • Bernard Paganotti is a man-beast.

  • great video, but their vocal performance in Trilogie au Trianon (2000), was much better in MHO.

It's fantastic anyway, as magma always is.

  • Nice to see this bunch on rare occasion together in the 90s. The horrible ice cold 80`s synthesizer/keybord imitating piano sound though; is really out of place in the Magma context and stiffens the performance of these masters a bit. The current Magma line-ups used either grand piano or Fender Rhodes, which both do their jobs.

  • I totally agree...

  • thanks berthy, does anyone know who is playing keyboards here?

  • the musician is patrick gauthier I guess

  • Unless you have information that proves that, I would seriously doubt that it is Gauthier. His stint in Magma was very, very brief and I don't think they would have brought him back for a reunion. I would say a better guess would be Benoit Widemann, but that's just a guess.

  • this isnt benoit widemann, but simon goubert who was the drummer of welcome & offering.

  • Nope, that ain't him.

  • Nice! Thanks for sharing this.
