I love how it switches back and forth between the mid-tempo and the slow tempo. It's sort of like an enticing tease to keep you yearning to listen further.
Kenny G......To even mention him in the same breath with Grover is blasphemy to any true lover of jazz. Kenny G is more of a pop artist in comparison. I realize it's my opinion but just listen to Grover in this video and this isn't even his best.
@MrNampihs I use to think that about Kenny G...but Kenny can play...You may not like his songs or his style, but Kenny can get deep, when he wants too, he's just found a style that brings him massive success and I can't blame him for not going away from it...
What can one even say? Grover was not only an amazing performer; he came across as humble and as a true gentleman. Seeing him peeform live several times was truly a privilege. And this one??? So much amazing talent one one stage. Wow. Yep, Grover; a great loss, yet his music lives; a great gain!
Wow - this is a master class! He had "bionic chops" - if I could ever play mine even half this good, I'd die HAPPY! I never had an opportunity to attend any of his concerts, so these old videos are definitely appreciated - thanks for sharing! :)
Dr. J made his name in NY with the ABA Nets (sorry Sixers fans) but that in no way diminishes the connection between 2 unbelievable dudes; Grover and The Doctor. They both revolutized their respective fields!! We miss you Grover!!!
I am fascinated...i live in the UK where basketball is not that big but i know that Julius Erving (Dr J) is a famous player who made his name with Philadelphia 76ers...who Grover was a big fan of - hence the dedication in the title .........but how does that make this peice more poignant or relivant ?
Genuine question...not critising your thoughts....i thought it was just a dedication to someone he admired as a sports fan
I've watch three times through and i just cant see how my professor or anyone can compare themselves to someone with that much skill and talent. Grover is truly remarkable and his tone is just too great i only wish i could have seen him live when i had the chance.
Pieces of A Dream were so talented and so young in this video. All still in their teens here. Grover gave them a chance out of Philly and that classic Philly smooth sound. Will Smith "Summertime" a classic Philly sound.
can someone tell me what the song back in 1991 from grover feat. phyllis hyman is called? im lookin for that track. the chorous says "dont you know that we share a blessed love ooh ohh, dont u know that we have it all" thats all i know but it was my song. if some one can help me i would greatly appreciate it.
Ooooh I'm sorry I can't believe I made that mistake...My dad would have a baby for getting that wrong...so I hopped on my other computer real quick once I thought about...It's on Time out of Mind cd.
Unfortunately in 1999, the GREAT Grover Washington Jr passed on. He had a Heart Attack shortly after performing in Manhattan for The EARLY SHOW on CBS. He's a legend. I remember when he passed BET's "bet on JAZZ" did a nice show dedicated to him. IT showed his funeral in Philly and Pieces of a Dream did a nice interview. Does anybody have that? RIP Grover Washington JR.
Kenny G said he practiced everyone note he played by starting and stopping the records almost note for note...If you notice the only time he sounds good is when he tries to sound just like Grover...
You can never ever say that you did not get more than your monies worth at a Grover concert. I saw him at the Blue Note in NYC, and I didn't pay enough for my ticket. Absolutely awesome!!
God's favorite instrument is Grover's saxophone .....
There will never be another Grover ...... RIP Brother ...!
Peace~
