I can't believe Aine Ui Cheallaigh's powerful and daunting version was cut into by the duets... which I can't even listen to after hearing her voice! AHHHHHH!!!
Aine's version is magnificent; yearning, pining, evocative, heartbreaking. Until tonight I hadn't realised that the masterful solo had been massacred into a schmaltzy duet.
My riverdance tape is clearly belongs in austin BUT is the better for it!
Aine Ui Chealaigh is the name of the first singer in this video. My favorite version is when she sings the entire song herself. I wish I knew how to post it.
We're playing a bit of this in our field show this year...the vocals are basically played by a trumpet soloist (she does amazing justice to it). It's a great song.
Aine Ui Cheallaigh! How lucky was I, an American kid in Ireland, to have had her as a music teacher? That gorgeous voice captures the heartbreak of exile in this haunting song.
I grew up with this song, and it still gives me chills. I love it, I love Riverdance, I love Jean Butler, I love Ireland and I love this version of it so much.
I grew up with this song too. I saw the show live nearly a dozen times in one summer [when I was around 12]. My dad worked security at the venue and I watched every show, hung around backstage and got an autographed poster from the whole troupe. Was the best summer of my life. This song was my favorite, and luckily enough they made a t-shirt with one of the verses on it. Still have it, but it's so worn away now.
I love the first version but the first duet is perfect to!!!! And what a wonderful song!!!!

@JewlTonz I absolutely agree!!! Aine Ui Cheallaigh's version is the BEST!!! Can her version be found anywhere on youtube?

I agree, Aine's is the absolute best. The duet was beautiful when I saw this show live, but just listening to the song, the duet is awful.

I think the first couple (second singers) were by far the best. The last two singers were absolutely garbage!

At 74 years young I've heard most of the great voices. Aine's voice is superb.

I love this song, and Aine has one of the loveliest Irish voices I ever heard.

Lisa Kelly flat blows smoke on this song , But not as good as the original riverdance singer, The orginal version rips your heart out.

Uilleann pipes btw are awesome, i know they were used in the original riverdance productions at least
tschallert 2 years ago
If you like the pipes you should listen to Caoineadh Chu Chulainn. It's one of my favourites from Riverdance.

This song sounds so much better with the higher female vocals. Dunno why all the newer versions of Riverdance use males for this song.

@Jemsgem First name Aine (pronounce as An-ya: Irish Anne).
Cannot spell or pronounce her Gaelic last name. If you look for show
credits you may find it.

i love this song, but I think the best version was when Michael Flatley and Jean Butler came out about halfway through it, it almost made me cry!
Cheers to everyone involved in Riverdance!

This is such a beautiful song...it makes me think so much of those so far away from me, and how a simple song like this can draw them near again....
