That was MEAN MAORI MEAN!!!... i'v seen the same similar thing, this was in 1994 it was only a man his wife and new born... whilst the kuia's were doing there karanga the man was doing there own. It was a spectacular moment at the time i thought "Things like this dont happend often" lol... man done his own whaikorero, arohamai, mohio tana ingoa??... kaore ahau.
