I'm auditioning for my very first musical on the 20th i believe. I'm really nervous, but luckily there's only going to be one teacher in there watching,
We're generally forced to audition with songs from the show we're doing. This year it's Once Upon a Mattress. I'm going for the minstrel or Sir Harry. However, if we had free song choice, is it sad that my top song would be Big Spender from Sweet Charity?
This is exactly how i feel about my musical audtition! Thank God we don't have to dance in front of everybody again cause that was painful. But I still get pretty nervous, especially for the singing. Im singing Only Hope from a Walk to Remember, which is beautiful but i'm afraid I won't do it justice.
Do people realize this was 3 years ago. I don't think that tips for that audition are necessary any longer. Haha, jkjk. Is now going to watch.... " I GOT THE PART!!!!!!!!!!"
for my monologue, I would probably end up doing something from lord of the rings. 'It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really matter...'
Haley, I like your videos, but you get too pretentious in this video. You talk about how much you hate high school because of teasing and stuff, then you make fun of everybody for their acting. Choose a side.
This is how I always feel at auditions. I go in thinking I am going to belt out a song but then I get so nervous my already high singing voice goes even higher and I forget how to talk....I need to work on that :P
for my audition I wore a black fluffy knee-length skirt with black sparkly leggings and a long black shirt with rhinestones tucked in. I also wore my hair in a semi-braid, which is a french braid to the nape of my neck, then tied off. I also wore a white headband with white flats. I also got the part I wanted.
i get nervous at auditions too! i would do something that you know and if you are really good the people will see that! even though you have now probably done the audtions, and been casted a part, and even done the show i would like to ask you for help. my audition is coming up and my school is doing 'the wizard of Oz' WHAT SHOULD I DO!! so if anyone has any advice, or even you hayley if you are reading this, please reply to this comment!!! thnx Cloud
where bright colors and flats. colors make u memorable and flats are easy to dance in. do a song that you know really well and perfect it at home. do a monologue that you know no one else will do so you are original make sure it is some thing hard they useally like someone who isn't afraid of a challenge but make sure it's not so hard you can't do it.
"My Favorite Things" from sound of music is great for most mid to high range singers (aka altos and sopranos). There's a nice lead in and then a chance to belt it out!
I have to simply agree. I LOVE theater. ESPECIALLY music theater. Who doesn't love bursting into random song and dance? But I HATE auditions. I've had the sad misfortune of being sick at EVERY audition I have gone to. Ugh. And how do you fit ANYTHING into 16 bars?!?
here's my opinion. if you dont get signed or whatever happens to peepz who 'makes a break' (if you know what i mean), it'll just be because luck wasn't with ya. most definitely not because you suck or anything. you're really natural and stuff. you're quite addicting. and i'm sure i'm not the only one thinking that. so good luck, hayley! keep on keeping on. you're cooler than you actually think, i can promise you that! not to mention super cute!! (i hope you read this btw!)
ahh i always watch your videos, along with 5ag, but i was in africa for a class when you posted this. i was the witch in into the woods my junior year of high school:) i've been in quite a few musicals but that was most definitely my favourite. <3. i havent gotten a chance to completely catch up yet, but i hope you got a part. :)
Holy cow, there are a lot of comments here. Anywho, I sat next to you at the Columbus Paper Towns reading, and I posted a video of John Green reading there, and you kind of float in the corner of it... so I thought you might like to have it... for the lols?
Ooooh.... Into the Woods? that's a great musical :) My high school did it my freshman year. I really really hope you get a part.... preferably Little Red Riding Hood... you would be so cute in that part!
arrg....i wasn't on youtube early enough to see this, which is the first time in a LONG time! But i hate auditions too, ugh...And I would bet you a hundred bucks that i get more nervous than you, (im just a sohpmore!) BUT, since you've already done it, i suppose advise is unnescessary, hope you did well!
You are a good actress. You should have no problem scoring a roll. And if you get rejected - screw them, you're going farther then anyone else in your school, I'd bet. On another note, why do you post yourself on the internet for all to see? There are some sick people out there. But then again...you need to stick your neck out to get noticed and you can't control who those people are...but then again the real famous and talented people have crazy deep-seeded issues. Whats your take on that?
Might I suggest the V speech from the movie version of V for Vendetta? As for a song, you can't go wrong with the pedophilic "Thank heaven for little girls" from Gigi.
One of my all time favorite monologues is from Cyrano de Bergerac- Act 1 Scene 5 (not sure of the line #). Viscount insults Cyrano's giant nose and the witty Cyrano tells him he sould have been more creative with his insult. Cyrano then goes into a giant list of possable, more witty, insluts the Viscount could have used. It is very dramatic & funny. I laugh every time I see/ read it. SparkNotes has an online copy of the play...could look for it there...
you need to pick something that shows the best part of your voice off, i suggest looking at the music and finding a piece there so they would know your voice fits into the music. Try "children will listen" its a big song that could work
If you're anything like me, wishing for a broken leg will result in falling down the stairs by accident and really breaking one. So I say... DON'T BREAK A LEG BUT DO AWESOME. (:
You could try something from 42nd Street. My school did that for our show last year, and our lead was a mezzo-soprano. "A Quarter to Nine" is a great song, and so is "You're Getting to be a Habit With Me." But it really depends on the character you're auditioning for, I guess.
Pick a song that shows off your range, and a song that not EVERYONE is going to sing (AKA anything from Wicked, Rent, or Hairspray).
Try picking a song that suits the character you're trying to go for (like if you wanted to go for the role of Cinderella, you wouldn't want to sing an up-tempo, you'd want to sing a ballad....etc etc.)
outfit: Wear Black with a REALLY Colorful accessorie or shoes that are flat and poppy!
Monolouge: try something from the Twilight series... i am completely IN LOVE with that book.... seriously if that book were human (preferably vampire) i would SOOOO marry it and honeymoon in the Isle of Esme. totally... sorry im just a WEEEE bit obsessed.
Singing: ummm... do a major and minor scale follwed by some fancy skat or something... maybe you should show off a bit and BELT IT OUT!! lol
Salome by Oscar Wild has some great monologues which are very unlikely for anyone else to choose, they're violent and dramamtic and just... awesome. As for singing... I can't help you sing better, but don't try and sing something you really just can't; like if it's really high or really low or whatever, stay where you can sing best!
sing "you raise me up"it's super easy to sing and memorize. I sang it as a solo in 6th grade. and if I could sing it in 6th grade and sound super good,I bet you can sing it as a senior and sound even better! brake a leg. just don't actually brake one
I always liked Jason Robert Brown's Songs From a New World. "Stars and the Moon" is a good one. The 16 measure chorus has a little belting, a fancy high note, and the emotional pause. Always a good one!!
Auditions are probably the most fun time of the year for the old spinsters that get to watch you try and sing. Every one will be just as nervous, so dont stress too much. I think you should go in your pyjamas to make sure you leave an impression. Good Luck! Break a leg.
i completely agree with everything you said about auditioning!!!!!

Break a leg!
Some tips:
1.Where something reflecting the character that is most appropriate for you (but not a costume)
2.Where heels! And if they have a dance audtition after then bring dance clothes and shoes.
3.Bring in a song and monologue that is a sort of reflection of what your charcter is like, and something that shows off your belt and/or range
4.Kick ass because you will!

Monolouge: try something from the Twilight series... i am completely IN LOVE with that book.... seriously if that book were human (preferably vampire) i would SOOOO marry it and honeymoon in the Isle of Esme. totally... sorry im just a WEEEE bit obsessed.
Singing: ummm... do a major and minor scale follwed by some fancy skat or something... maybe you should show off a bit and BELT IT OUT!! lol

The leg has been wished! And actually, I think the first few pages of Maureen Johnson's part of 'Let it Snow' would make for a good monologue.

Good luck :) x

I don't know how to advise you, but are they really going to turn down the famous hayleyghoover? I think not.
... that high note scared me, though.

You should totally do some anti-semitic opera. Wagner's "Das Judentum in der Musik" sound good? Good. Glad we could agree. :)
