Shameful ad, wrong info. What's the point of a court that simply adheres to the will of the people? The will of people is reflected in the constitution and the Supreme Court interprets it, if a law is inconsistent with the constitution; then that law must be declared void. It's that simple.
This is the most ridiculous advertisement I've ever seen (besides Aqua Buddha of course). These judges were interpreting the constitution, not being activist judges. Our judicial system here in Iowa is now politicized by right-wing conservatives. God help us all.
I will definitely vote yes to keep judges who vote based on the law, and not on the popular opinion. Because if judges voted based on the popular opinion at the time, there would still be Jim Crow laws, no interracial marriages, separate and NOT equal schools, and countless other injustices that many of us see as discriminatory today.
Keep on making decisions based on the law of the United States of America!
If you want gay couples to have the same legal rights as married couples, then give them those rights! But then why are you pushing further to neuter marriage? What other benefit can destroying the concept of marriage have then social change?
No one yet has admitted that the whole gay marriage thing is about forcing social acceptance of homosexuality. Anyone ready to man up about it?
Maybe to some this is about an agenda or politics. However for thousands, this is about families being recognized as equal under the law. Nothing more, nothing less. You know like it says in the Bible, "Do Unto Others As You Would Have Done To You." You talk about morality but I don't know how you can look at thousands of children who are raised by loving and supportive same gender parents and say, you and your family are less than! Please, pray about this. It is not an agenda for many!

Hmm....quick question...last I checked, people voted them in including those who now want them off. Sure makes you guys hypocrites. If I could I'd vote yes for sure. Give it up NOM, you'll never win.
vote yes if you have any sense at all. there's no way i'm telling anyone they can't be married, especially when they love each other. In massachusetts, the divorce rate went down ever since gay marriage was made legal. don't believe me? look it up, see for yourself. gay marriage is possibly the most idiotic "issue" i've ever seen contested. of course we should allow everyone to be free-how many damn civil rights movements will it take to get rid of these ancient ideas about such basic rights?
Because, Con: marriage is a powerful symbol. You know that: that's why you and NOM go to such lenght to propagate lies, bigotry and hatred about gays and lesbians, about whom in fact you know very little indeed. But make no mistake: we are there, we exist, and we will demand our rights!!! Like it or not. Oneday marriage will be a symbol of equality, and not one of hate and inequality.
And because well, in the end, we don't resent being called gays and lesbians, Con. That's not the point: that's who we are, and we are proud of it. Getting marriage equality is about, well, getting equality. Making sure our rights, our families, our body integrity and our property is protected. It's about you, Con, not being able to tell me that my relationship is less worthy than yours. It's about you not telling me that my relationship is mere "friendship." That's why we fight for marriage.
Another bullshit comment from NYConservative on NOM's blog responding to Tim: "Why is it, Tim, that blacks can be treated equally under the law without being called "white", and women can be treated equally under the law without being called "men", but gay couples cannot be treated equally under the law without being called "married?"
Well because, Con, marriage comes with rights! Because not allowing us to marry causes harm and treats us as second-rate citizens (see above).
The amazing thing is, the decision was unanimous. Two of the judges were appointed by a Republican governor, and the decision was upholding a lower court's decision not just made up by the court. NOM is biting off more lies than they can chew... and as one person so famously said "No-one is being forced to become 'gay-married'..."
other rights in Iowa that they put their own views on and forced the people of Iowa to accept: women's right to vote, interracial marriage, school desegration... hmmm... we should get rid of them.. they make us do things we don't want to do (or accept)!!!
Another series of lies and manipulating messages in an attempt to impose fear and justify prejudice. Great work, NOM...Why don't you try taking up a cause that actually affects people in an adverse way? Marrying my partner has zero effect on you, the straight couple down the street, or the gay couple down the street. Oh yeah, and most kids we know aren't "confused" by us. They are more confused by why you and others try do demonize our relationships.
Marriage "redefined?" Not at all. Lakota chief Crazy Horse had one or two male spouse(s) and many other Native American nations also have had what we now call same-sex marriages. Ethnographers have documented this. Some examples: Omahas, Zapotecs, Mohaves, Crow, Hidatsa, Ojibwa, Winnebago, Yuma and Timucua. Other cultures too. In 17th century Fukian Province China, same-sex marriages between gay men seem to have been common. And in West Africa, "woman marriage[s]"-- practiced by many tribes.
The Supreme court in two states have independently ruled that restricting marriage to only same-sex couples is a violation of equality guaranteed by the US Constitution. If you disagree with the Constitution maybe you should move to intolerant Uganda where you can be with your own kind.
America doesn't need any more religious extremists.
Stop imposing YOUR will on the American people; you're being hypocritical. Civil rights should not be up to the will of the voters. This issue is not at all comparable to the petty issues you're concerned about like your right to hunt. Imagine if the government told you that you couldn't marry the person you loved, or have any of the legal rights that come with marriage. You'd want to change that, too, just like the gay community does now.
Lol now if the U.S. Supreme Court did the exact same thing that Iowa supreme Court did, I wonder what NOM would do. Most likely would be crying their asses off... Man now that would have me laughing for hours
@whosjohngalt004 Your beliefs aren't hate crimes, everyone has the right to have their own beliefs...just your beliefs are your beliefs and not everyone elses..and your beliefs cannot be imposed on others just for your satisfaction. You can teach your children as you see fit, however they should be taught how to tolerate everyone whether they agree to it or not....look at any other civil rights movement.
@whosjohngalt004 Schools teaching about homosexuality doesn't mean they're taking a moral side on it, just informing students....and the church being sued only happens when they operate a business and openly discriminate...that is almost the same as saying a catholic church wont rent their private business location to a Muslim just because they're Muslim. As for your 'I don't want my kids being taught that homosexuality is a good thing'...I believe they're being taught they to tolerate eachother
@whosjohngalt004 "Marriage has always been a man and a woman coming together. You want to segregate it to only men or only women. Hence, the neutering of marriage." Who said anything about only men or only women? You you insinuating that straight people can no longer get married? And saying Marriage has always been a man and a woman is like saying slavery has always been accepted...just because you don't like change doesn't mean its not 'fair'.
And not everyone believes in the Bible. Not everyone is Christian: some are atheist and do not believe in God. Why should those precepts be imposed on us? It seems to me that NOM and its acolytes are the one imposing their religious ideology on us. We're not imposing anything: we simply seek our rights, at the risk of repeating myself. We're not on a crusade to recruit anyone to our "lifestyle" (???) or to convert anyone to homosexuality. Nope. But laws protecting us would be really nice.
Freedom of religion... That's another biggie. Some people seem to think we're on a crusade to take away people's rights of religion. We're not. I personally don't care what my neighbor's religious beliefs are. He/she can believe in whatever religion there is, it's totally fine by me. But when a religion actively seeks to take away my rights, out of pure fear, ignorance and prejudices, there is something deeply wrong in that. It shouldn't happen, regardless of what the Bible says.
And also: this issue is much broader than simply gays and lesbians getting equal rights as married couples. It's about ending bullying in schools, discrimination at work. It's about not losing your job for who you are. It's about not being beaten up, just for "looking" gay, or not acting out your gender the right way. It's about getting the respect that we deserve, regardless of what one's feelings are concerning homosexuality. It's certainly not about taking anyone's freedom of religion away.
As for our rights: they're always the same. Tax exemptions, hospital visits, ability to make choices for our partner if he/she falls ill. But more than that: it's the recognition of our relationship, which is based on love, just like straight ones. There really is no difference as regard to the "love" component. You may think otherwise. Your church may tell you otherwise, but really there isn't. We have same-sex friends: we can make the difference between love and friendship.
There is a lot of really weird things going on here: kids would be taught at school that homosexuality is ok? Kids are not taught about the morality or immorality of homosexuality: they are just taught to respect everyone, not to bully anyone, regardless of sexual orientation, or any other factor. And I naively tought Christianity taught love and respect for each other... Such comments make me run far, far away from such religious bigotry and from the so-called teachings of the Bible...
@whosjohngalt004 And 'neuter marriage' ...really? The oxford definition your clinging to doesn't mention children....so are you believing someone infertile should be married? Your biased religious views shouldn't be imposed on anyone...
@PyRoMD17 Marriage has always been a man and a woman coming together. You want to segregate it to only men or only women. Hence, the neutering of marriage.
@whosjohngalt004 Are you kidding? Your concept of marriage isnt the same belief as my concept of marriage... and most GLBT wouldn't agree that someone can sue a Chuch for discrimination..these are far edge cases and of the many people who want to marry there is only 2 cases where someone decided they wanted to sue?...thats not a 'social change'... and are kids told their parents are bigots? No they're taught to be accepting of everyone (as it is a public school my taxes pay for)..which they need
@PyRoMD17 You need to do your homework a little better. Schools started teaching about "Dad and Dad" just as soon as the judges legalized gay marriage in CA and Mass. And churches have already been sued for the "hate crimes" of not allowing gay marriages on their property. I don't want my kids being taught that homosexuality is a good thing. I know from experience that it is a horrible thing for people. And I don't want my beliefs labeled as a hate crime. Will you stand up for my rights?
Your rights? This is a country of religious tolerance and to say you only want your kids taught what you believe is an example of not only bigotry but setting your kids up to become intolerant people too. Oh my, I hope for your children's sake they never have to go through the turmoil, wondering how their parents will take the way they are. Straight people make gay babies!!
@whosjohngalt004 100% with you. God did not create Adam to mary Steve. If man want to mary a man it should not be done in the church with Biblical teaching. It seems like people only remember GOD when there's tragedy, and when it comes to HIs teaching we are in denial. People uses word love/loving GOD a ticket for tolerating everything. My opinion.
Nobody is trying to make it only men or only women...
Also, we don't have those rights. I am not going to continually repeat myself but look back through my comments, you will see why the few minimal scraps the LGBT community have been thrown are inadequate.
@MrOlderandwiser You rejected the opinion because you feel its bias? Why because the Judge has a long history of ruling in favor of pro right winged conservative values?
Divorce rates higher than the current 40-50%? Are you worried its going to ruin your religious version of the sanctity of marriage? Can you show me one credible report that says your more sickly when your in a gay relationship, or your more likely to commit suicide?
I reject the legal opnion set forth in that case. it is apparent, especially in Cali9fornia, that the legal system is bias. I recently heard a report that divorce rates, suicide and sickness are much higher among gay couples. Are you aware of that report ? A question for you ..... what is morality in your opinion? Or is there any such thing?
@MrOlderandwiser I would like to read this report for myself as well as any scholarly response to this report. Could you please tell me where you found this information?
Suicide rates are higher amongst LGBT but seriously, what do you expect with ignorant fools constantly beating on them mentally and physically, telling them they are vile and inappropriate. It is not an easy thing to live with, always being told you are wrong and immoral.
As to the other 2, I would like to see evidence - divorce? My goodness, straight people already destroyed the sanctity of marriage. Adultery, remarriage, premarital sex...
@whosjohngalt004 Read the prop8 case. They DID prove in California that it would not have an impact. The defense did not have any proof whatsoever that allowing gay couples to marry would impact them, only their religious opinions which is why they lost.
You still have yet to say what rights you would lose by allowing GLBT the same equal rights.
Actually, NO states that offer civil unions or marriage offer equal rights. This is because of DOMA which prevents the Federal government from recognizing anything but man/woman marriage. There are no tax benefits, immigration rights, anything to do with the federal government.
whosjohngalt004 is severely misinformed and should probably do some research
@PyRoMD17 Hmmm. The judges that legalized gay marriage claim that it was proven that it would not have an impact. Oh, well then I feel much better about it then!
We've already seen its impact. Children in public schools are taught that their parents are bigots and taken to lesbian weddings. Churches are sued for not allowing gay couples to get married on their property. You call that "no impact"?
Churches are not sued. Nobody will be forced to allow anyone they dont allow to get married in their church.
Currently kids in school are taught it is ok to bully kids because they are gay. I wish the 'bigot' parents would step in first and teach the children to live and let live. That way, nobody would be taught that anybody was bad.
Did you read the prop8 final verdict? I would like to hear your opinion about it instead of spouting rubbish for all to see
@whosjohngalt004 How many states do you think have 'civil unions' that offer the exact same benefits as the 'married'? There is only a few that offer that, the rest offer only a few of the same benefits/protections. And yes the federal government DOMA was bigoted to say states do not have to recognize same-sex marriages from other states and that the federal government will not recognize it and give the federal level protections or benefits.
Most of the LGBT do not care if it is called marriage or not and there are very very few states that offer EQUAL rights.
No its bigot far right winged scar tactics that allow these laws to pass. There is not a single legitimate non-religious reason to deny LGBT people rights that the majority have.
Minorities do have the right to change laws, not sure what countries history you studied...
@whosjohngalt004 You still fail to see minorities have rights that you cannot control due to the many protections we have against that in this country....by not liking or wanting something does not mean you can control it....what changes are you going to see by allowing homosexual couples to marry? These are basic rights given to the majority of americans and denied against a few for really no reason..the last several court cases have proved there is no legitimate reason to deny LGBT rights
@whosjohngalt004 the many bigot laws throughout the country prop8, dama..etc...the removal of laws that were create equal protection for LGBT is also bigotry
@PyRoMD17 Hmmm. So giving them equal rights is not enough. You have to call a gay couple married if they want or you are a bigot. Support "prop8, drama..etc.." and you are the equivalent of a nazi.
You should really look into what rights are actually given to gay couples in most states. It seems you are not aware of them.
@whosjohngalt004 what laws are you reading where hospital visitation/taxes/inheritance are the same for unmarried gay partners, who cannot get married due to bigot laws, as married heterosexual couples?
@Pyromd17 You are trying to change the definition of a word so as to enact social change over a people who don't want it. I really think the burden of proof rests on you to show why you have a right to do this.
@glancy2009 Then why are you not fighting for those rights in the remaining states that don't offer those protections? Why are you pushing for neutered marriage in states that already have those rights for gay couples/parents. Sorry, that explanation doesn't add up.
@whosjohngalt004 Like woman invented the right to not be confined to their house? Or women don't have to walk 10 paces behind their husband..or wear what they want? Where do you think your 'rights' came from?
"Do people have the *right* to invent *rights* that take away the *rights* of others so that they can feel better about their own issues?"
Again..what right is being taken away from you? There are a lot of benefits awarded to married couples are given by default
The Court ruled that Iowa's Defense of Marriage Act, which was passed by the legislature, was unconstitutional based on the Equal Protection Clause of our Constitution. Declaring DOMA unconstitutional does nothing more than place the issue back in the hands of the legislature, so they can make necessary changes to insure the purpose of the original legislation is maintained while also making DOMA constitutional. An Amendment to Iowa's Constitution will resolve the conflict.
You are right, the people have the right to change it or not change it. Unfortunately the Liberals who presently control the Iowa Congress will not allow a motion on the floor which would allow the people of Iowa to vote on what they want Marriage to mean in their state. 31 other states have allowed such a vote and in all cases Traditional Marriage (one man and one woman) was upheld, as it will be in Iowa when a vote is allowed. This will happen I think after this November.
@rototor48 Well if you're going to get technical, then I suppose you're going to have to add the qualifier "and able to have children" as part of you Marriage between a man and a woman. After all that was basically why people got married in the first place. So, with that qualifier in, because after all that's what marriage is about isn't it?, the old people and folks who can't have kids along with same sex couples can't get married...gee this list of folks who can't wed is getting kinda long huh
.....The voters had no say, it was taken before the court to see if it was unconstitutional or not. All it's saying is that if a same sex couple wishes to get married they can. No religious leader, be they Rabbi, Imam, Priest, Reverand, etc, HAS to marry someone if it goes against their religious beliefs. All it's saying is that EVERYONE who WANTS to get married has the RIGHT to do so LEGALLY. And couldn't you say that you're imposing YOUR traditional values on those who are denied their rights?
@glancy2009 In most states gay couples can receive the same tax benefits, inheritance and hospital visitation rights, etc. as married couples. So these rights are obviously not the issue here. Neutered marriage advocates are going for social change here. Don't you think that society has a right to decide if they want their most fundamental institution changed?
what about visitation of partners children (whom you may have raised for 12 yrs), prison visits, bereavement leave, pension assumption, divorce protections... I could go on and on.. Federal recognition is required, not a couple of states
I appreciate the response glancy2009. It is true that you indeed have the right to believe whatever you choose or choose not to, as do I. I'm glad for a belief \ faith that I have that gives me hope for the presnt and for the future , including eternity. It would be difficult to function in this awful world without that confidence. My God knows who you are I WILL pray that you too might have that confidence - soon! Have a great day!
Seems to me that you all are missing the point. Marriage is a contract between one man and one woman, whether you are reading religious or civil law. This law has never been changed religiously and has not been change in the Civil Process in Iowa. Judges cannot create law from whole cloth. According to the Constitution, the authority for Making law is given solely to the legislature. No Iowa legislature has ever passed a law legalizing gay marriage and therefore gay marriage does not exist.
@rototor48 - wow - another retard who knows NOTHING about Civics speaks.....HOW does anyone's marriage AFFECT you PERSONALLY??? HMMM> ? How? Please tell us.......according to the SCOTUS ALL People men and women have the RIGHT to Marry.
Excuse me for not being immediately available to you.
The constitution gives everybody equal protection. Just because you chose to have a religious marriage, you are offered many state benefits that LGBT families are not offered.
The reason that SSM is important is that families that live together and love each other are refused simple things like inheritance, hospital visits, immigration rights, equal parenting etc
Tax paying Americans supporting things they can't be part of
Okay then..... everybody has something that they hold to as a guide post for their life. What do you hold to??? What gives you hope for yor future? It wasn't my intenent to offend you. I am curious as to how you arrive at your viewpoint.......mine is deeply rooted in my faith...... what is the basis for your belief system?
Why must everybody have a particular guide. I am honest, I work hard, I try to help people when I can, I don't hurt people.
There is nothing in particular I hold to guide me. I use my instinct and moral standing. Morals that I see fit to live by. As long as there is nobody being hurt, I see no issue with that. There are many people in the world with different morals and I am not saying I agree with them but I am happy with the ones I live by.
@whosjohngalt004: I could also ask you the same question. What rights are we taking from you? Gay marriage won't be taking away any of your rights, just like interracial marriages didn't take away any rights from same-race couples. Really, I've never understood that logic. And it's not about redefining society either: we are not on a mission to undermine American values, simply, we want to make it more just. Which is why we insist on having our civil rights recognized.
It's truly sad to see NOM's anti-democratic, anti-constitutional tactics. Hopefully people will wake up to such bigotry, homophobia and hatred and will realize that NOM is simply breeding fear into the population. They are controlling and dangerous, plain and simple.
I'm not sure where people got the idea that judges follow the will of the people..their job is to interpret the law. What effect is this going to have on you @MrOlderandwiser, or your marriage? Last I checked this is a land where it is your choice to practice whatever religion you want, but it sounds like you feel religion should be imposed on everyone...are you afraid the homos are going to come get you...fireballs going to come from the sky... and to @whosjohngalt004 what rights will you lose?
"the minority right in question" has a most profound effect on everybody!! There is no mention in God's word about 2 men or women procreating. It is humanly impossible ...atleast naturally. God's design is 1 man, 1 woman through marriage. Deviation from His plan has a profound effect on humanity. History has proven that!
@MrOlderandwiser - again - stuff your BUY_BULL where the sun don't shine..as an X-Catholic...I don't give a crap what you think about Gawd......obviously Brainwashing worked well on you,.
@glancy2009 I'm very sorry that you don't believe the people should be involved in defining society's most important unit. I'm very sorry that you care more about making some troubled individuals feel better about themselves than strengthening our nation's families and children. I feel very bad for some gay individuals who struggle with their identity, but they need to stop pretending that by taking away others' rights, they will be bettered. It won't work. It's already backfiring.
@whosjohngalt004 The majority has never been given the right to trump the rights of the minority. The judges have a duty to follow the constitution, which clearly separates between church and state. You can believe in whatever you want. What you CANNOT do, however, is discriminate against other people just because your religion tells you so, or because you feel like it. You actually have to prove why it's necessary to discriminate, something NOM hasn't been able to do.
You do the civil rights movements harm to compare gay marriage to Black segregation and women's rights. "All men are created equal" does not mean "you can call whatever you want marriage if you really want to." There are too many major differences between a gay relationship and a true marriage to combine them. People can't create a "right" to whatever they want. I can't create a right to be called American Indian so I can get special govt funding.
The comparison is simply the Majority Vs. Minority.
The people didn't want interracial marriages or blacks serving in the military or women having equal rights. If it wasn't for a few 'activist judges', the laws would be the same now.
I assume you are aware that the sky didn't fall when those judges awarded equal rights to all humans even though the bible didn't agree.
What if, ten years from now, one of your children told you that they were gay? What would say to them? That they are scum? That are only a 2nd-class citizen? That they don't deserve equal protection under the same Constitution that allowed YOU to marry the person of your choice?
How disgusting.
Hate to burst your bubble, but YOUR rights end where MY rights begin. You can say whatever you want, but you have NO RIGHT to stop ME from marrying whomever I damn well please.
But minorities can take away vote on majority rights? I don't want my marriage changed. I don't want my children taught something in schools that I don't believe. But all that has to change b/c some judges think they know better?
Minorities didn't take the majority vote away. The vote shouldn't have happened in the first place.
I am very sorry that you would choose to make your children grow up in a world where it is OK to discriminate against different people but I for one would like my children to grow up being taught that everyone is equal regardless of how they live their lives.
let the people of Iowa vote on the issue of gay marraige!!!! We are a government of the people , by the people and for the people. But it seems like those that can buy our public officials off are the ones that have control. LET THE PEOPLE DECIDE!!!
On the religious issue??? You may or mat not believe in God - it's your choice! The God i know as personal Saviour is not a hateful God. He is a perfect and loving and holy God.. He has given his plan for men and women in His book, the Bible.
@MrOlderandwiser - here's an idea..how about we Vote for you to GO PHUK yourself!!! ok!!! Since WHEN in America do people/citizens Get to Vote on others citizens rights?
Would you really want people to vote away your right to privacy or your right to free speech? Of course not! They are guaranteed by the constitution. All people are equal under the law, and deserve their rights.
As a person of faith I would like to apologize to the GLBT community for the persecution you face daily from "religious" people. Please know you have many allies in this community as well & we are willing to fight for your CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT to marry.
Thank you for your support. I would like to say on behalf of the LGBT people and ally's that I personally know, we know that christianity is not what is causing the problems. We are well aware that these people use the bible but are far from christian. People should make sure they follow EVERY law in the bible before condemning others...
Oh, and one last thing: traditional marriage is the foundation of society? Christian values are the basis of society? Hmmm. I can't wait until pedophile priests are finally held accountable for the despicable acts they have committed. And traditional marriage between 2 people? Then why do Mormons still practice polygamy?
@Skulander1 I agree with you 100% BUT the momons that practice polygamy get excommunicated from the church. They only did it when so many men were drafted off to war and women and children were left without man, so with the permission of the man's wife he would marry and take care of another family as well as his own.
@glancy2009 I was not making an excuse. I was stating a fact. I think the group of Mormons that are terrorizing us is just as bad as the next guy and many of my friends happen to be mormon.
@MaySin92 Thanks for this commenty May. Indeed, that is true. Polygamy is no longer widely practiced with the Mormon faith itself. My comment was simply to point out the irony of charging gays and lesbians of wanting to promote polygamy and polygamous marriages, when it's that same community which gave so much money for Prop HATE in California. Gays and lesbians do NOT support polygamy, as I'm sure you are aware. This is another lie promoted by a few religiosu activists against us...
When did equal rights become an imposition? Come on now, honestly. Why is it that african americans and women can have all these rights but gays can't. Segregation was abolished a long time ago and now the gay community is being segregated as well. Why on Earth is it just so impossible to get it through these people's heads that we have the same BASIC INALIENABLE HUMAN RIGHTS as everyone else in the Earth. Why do we get treated differently?
Out of control judges imposing their own values on the bench? You know what, Brian, Maggie, NOM and other: YOU are the ones imposing YOUR values on us. YOU are the minority telling the majority how to think, how to act, YOU are the one spreading prejudices and lies at all cost, just from preventing 2 loving individuals from getting their civil rights. That's what's shameful! But we do NOT intend to have this ideology imposed upon us.
@abc1000001 and tell me - HOW does ANYONE marrying affect YOU personally? Please......do Tell....we're all ears. ..and another thing Go PHUK yourself.
We don't live in a theocracy! Biblical law has NO AUTHORITY WHATSOEVER over US constitutional law. The US Constitution is the highest law in the land & its 14th Amendment guarantees equal protection under the law for ALL US citizens. It's in direct violation of that Amendment to bar gay couples from 1000+ legal protections conferred by marriage just to satisfy your personal bigotry.
I don't *care* if you want to hear it or not. You are certainly NOT the boss of me.
@2MixFix Thankfully, the Good Lord has given us the meaning of what marriage is all about and because of it, civilization continues to live on because of that institution.
I don't see you wanting to have a polite conversation so I will be deleting any reply.
THe simple statement that marriage is only between a man and a wife? I don't think so. If you're going to discriminate against me, propagate lies and hatred that lead to gay teen suicides or violence against them, you HAVE to tell us why it has to be that way, why it's such a threat to society that you HAVE to have such a homophobic behavior. So far the arguments put forth have been unconvincing, at best. Your hatred and bigotry makes your imagination run wild.
Out of control judges? What is going on here is out of control religious activism, hatred, prejudices and homophobia that is going on here. Brian, Maggie and NOM are the biggest threat to the moral foundation of society by propagating lies and fometing religious extremism. After we get marriage equality, we'll need much tougher laws against bullying in schools, much tougher laws against hate crime. There are more batlles to be waged: we'll not led a loud ulta--religious minority decide for us.
Oh My God.. Wow.. I am getting sick to death of seeing you crazy people everywhere. Take your nose out of gay peoples business. If gay marriage is affecting your marriage, then there is something VERY wrong with your marriage. They are not activist judges, they are giving EQUAL rights..
What is with the obsession anyway? Your life so sad that your mission has to be to upset others? You make me sick!
It's not your place to decide what is right as far as law is concerned. There is SEPARATION of CHURCH and STATE. Now please tell me why you people keep spouting off about how homosexuality is wrong in the eyes of "god"? This has no place in state proceedings. Homosexuality is not wrong. People are born this way and make better parents than any of you closed minded people. Did you forget that the bible says not to judge others? You tell this to other people, now live up to it yourself.
And for the record: NO, judge Walker's ruling was not that of an activist judge. He simply stated facts that have been shown to be true, not just once or twice: in many studies, over many years. Anti-gays refuse to see those facts: that's not the problems of gays and lesbians, we are not responsible for the religious right's bigotry and hatred, and for their unwillingness to inform themselves. YES, a storm is gathering! It shows no sign of slowing down: it may transform itself in a hurricane.
@Skulander1 Oh heavens, our little Canadian sissie-boy is at it again, spewing out the trite, worn-out words of the LGBT's minuscule & feeble vernacular; 'discrimination', 'hate' & 'bigotry'. Surprised you failed to mention 'intolerance'. Perhaps one day, you will realize that this is nothing more than people's natural reaction to all things perverse, unnatural, and so obviously wrong. Thanks to Brian & Maggie and all the myriad others who stand tall against the vile face of perversity!
@djhartm Thank you. And yes i also thank Brian and Maggie and everybody who has the guts to stand up and make the simple statement that marriage means husband and wife. There is nothing more obvious! Those who can't see this simple easily observable reality have clouded their thinking process somehow.
Send the homos packing? Well, we'll see about that. Hate baby, hate. The homos are NOT packing, and we certainly do NOT intend to bow low to ridiculous, religious ideologies whose sole purpose is to promote hate, bigotry and intolerance. Gays and lesbians, and the growing number of their allies, are fed up the religious right hijacking the civil rights of a minority. Today the homos. Yesterday the blacks. Tomorrow, and even now: the Muslims, the Latinos.. The hate just doesn't stop, doesn't it?

@boat4funtime Ding dong anybody home? The constitution and the laws of the land were initially formed upon JudeoChristian religious values. We won't let you paper that over.
@GatheringStorm999 Yes. Christianity - and especially the 10 Commandments - are the moral foundation of western society and western law. The respect for the rights and freedom of the individual that exist in our society are there because of the Christian tradition that built this country and all of western society. Consider how homosexuality is dealt with in Islamic and communist(atheist) societies! Gays will never get it but as you said we need to not paper over our own history. Thank you.
Ding dong, no they weren't. They were based on fairness and equality for all so the future generations of this country would never have to face the persecution the founding fathers faced in England.
According to the Constitution, supreme court justices cannot legislate from the bench!!!! That's is not what NOM says or those "activists" who stand for 1 man , 1 woman marriage.... this is the law, like it OR NOT. These justices have usurped their authority and violated the constitution!!! They have broken the law and should voted out and then brought to justice. Even more than the legal issue -- is the fact that God created marriage to be between one man and woman, deal with it!
I think we need to realize that these judges have no authority to make any ruling WHATSOEVER on marriage. Marriage is a private covenant between two people, and the government has no right or authority to regulate, legislate, or define the institution AT ALL. Privatize marriage and do it ASAP
Ok, seriously. People have to stop talking about activist judges. They're not!!! How can someone presenting facts, which are known for some time, be termed activist? These facts do not suit NOM, who has not been able to present any kind of credible facts in court: so be it. But they're facts nonetheless. It has nothing to do with activism. If anyone's an activist, it's NOM, with its lies, hatred and religious bigotry.
@Skulander1 Religious views are inherently discriminatory, as they should be. You knuckleheads think that anything goes is a religion, and worship at the alter of political correctness. Sorry, it doesn't wash. Send the homos packing.
Interesting fact: Gay Marriage has been struck down by voters every time it was put to a democratic vote, without fail, even in liberal Maine and California. But elitist liberal judges and legislators think they know better than the people.
Don't you think if we are going to change the definition of something that has been one way for the entire history of mankind it should be up to the people who will be affected by it?
Shameful ad, wrong info. What's the point of a court that simply adheres to the will of the people? The will of people is reflected in the constitution and the Supreme Court interprets it, if a law is inconsistent with the constitution; then that law must be declared void. It's that simple.

Skulander1 1 year ago

PyRoMD17 1 year ago
@whosjohngalt004 "Marriage has always been a man and a woman coming together. You want to segregate it to only men or only women. Hence, the neutering of marriage." Who said anything about only men or only women? You you insinuating that straight people can no longer get married? And saying Marriage has always been a man and a woman is like saying slavery has always been accepted...just because you don't like change doesn't mean its not 'fair'.
PyRoMD17 1 year ago
And not everyone believes in the Bible. Not everyone is Christian: some are atheist and do not believe in God. Why should those precepts be imposed on us? It seems to me that NOM and its acolytes are the one imposing their religious ideology on us. We're not imposing anything: we simply seek our rights, at the risk of repeating myself. We're not on a crusade to recruit anyone to our "lifestyle" (???) or to convert anyone to homosexuality. Nope. But laws protecting us would be really nice.
Skulander1 1 year ago
Freedom of religion... That's another biggie. Some people seem to think we're on a crusade to take away people's rights of religion. We're not. I personally don't care what my neighbor's religious beliefs are. He/she can believe in whatever religion there is, it's totally fine by me. But when a religion actively seeks to take away my rights, out of pure fear, ignorance and prejudices, there is something deeply wrong in that. It shouldn't happen, regardless of what the Bible says.
Skulander1 1 year ago
And also: this issue is much broader than simply gays and lesbians getting equal rights as married couples. It's about ending bullying in schools, discrimination at work. It's about not losing your job for who you are. It's about not being beaten up, just for "looking" gay, or not acting out your gender the right way. It's about getting the respect that we deserve, regardless of what one's feelings are concerning homosexuality. It's certainly not about taking anyone's freedom of religion away.
Skulander1 1 year ago
As for our rights: they're always the same. Tax exemptions, hospital visits, ability to make choices for our partner if he/she falls ill. But more than that: it's the recognition of our relationship, which is based on love, just like straight ones. There really is no difference as regard to the "love" component. You may think otherwise. Your church may tell you otherwise, but really there isn't. We have same-sex friends: we can make the difference between love and friendship.
Skulander1 1 year ago
There is a lot of really weird things going on here: kids would be taught at school that homosexuality is ok? Kids are not taught about the morality or immorality of homosexuality: they are just taught to respect everyone, not to bully anyone, regardless of sexual orientation, or any other factor. And I naively tought Christianity taught love and respect for each other... Such comments make me run far, far away from such religious bigotry and from the so-called teachings of the Bible...
Skulander1 1 year ago
@whosjohngalt004 And 'neuter marriage' ...really? The oxford definition your clinging to doesn't mention children....so are you believing someone infertile should be married? Your biased religious views shouldn't be imposed on anyone...

MrOlderandwiser 1 year ago
PyRoMD17 1 year ago
@PyRoMD17
Actually, NO states that offer civil unions or marriage offer equal rights. This is because of DOMA which prevents the Federal government from recognizing anything but man/woman marriage. There are no tax benefits, immigration rights, anything to do with the federal government.
whosjohngalt004 is severely misinformed and should probably do some research
glancy2009 1 year ago
@PyRoMD17 Hmmm. The judges that legalized gay marriage claim that it was proven that it would not have an impact. Oh, well then I feel much better about it then!
We've already seen its impact. Children in public schools are taught that their parents are bigots and taken to lesbian weddings. Churches are sued for not allowing gay couples to get married on their property. You call that "no impact"?
whosjohngalt004 1 year ago
@whosjohngalt004
I would like to hear your opinion about it instead of spouting rubbish for all to see
glancy2009 1 year ago
@whosjohngalt004 How many states do you think have 'civil unions' that offer the exact same benefits as the 'married'? There is only a few that offer that, the rest offer only a few of the same benefits/protections. And yes the federal government DOMA was bigoted to say states do not have to recognize same-sex marriages from other states and that the federal government will not recognize it and give the federal level protections or benefits.
PyRoMD17 1 year ago
Most of the LGBT do not care if it is called marriage or not and there are very very few states that offer EQUAL rights.
No its bigot far right winged scar tactics that allow these laws to pass. There is not a single legitimate non-religious reason to deny LGBT people rights that the majority have.

PyRoMD17 1 year ago
@whosjohngalt004 You still fail to see minorities have rights that you cannot control due to the many protections we have against that in this country....by not liking or wanting something does not mean you can control it....what changes are you going to see by allowing homosexual couples to marry?

This will happen I think after this November.

.....The voters had no say, it was taken before the court to see if it was unconstitutional or not.
Mosempai 1 year ago
@glancy2009 In most states gay couples can receive the same tax benefits, inheritance and hospital visitation rights, etc. as married couples. So these rights are obviously not the issue here. Neutered marriage advocates are going for social change here. Don't you think that society has a right to decide if they want their most fundamental institution changed?
whosjohngalt004 1 year ago
@whosjohngalt004
what about visitation of partners children (whom you may have raised for 12 yrs), prison visits, bereavement leave, pension assumption, divorce protections... I could go on and on.. Federal recognition is required, not a couple of states
glancy2009 1 year ago
I appreciate the response glancy2009. It is true that you indeed have the right to believe whatever you choose or choose not to, as do I. I'm glad for a belief \ faith that I have that gives me hope for the presnt and for the future , including eternity. It would be difficult to function in this awful world without that confidence. My God knows who you are I WILL pray that you too might have that confidence - soon! Have a great day!

Thank you for your understanding sir. I would find it very difficult to function in a world with only blind faith as an option.
I am glad we can agree to disagree.

HMMM> ? How? Please tell us.......according to the SCOTUS ALL People men and women have the RIGHT to Marry.
rextrek 1 year ago
By the silence, should I assume that Mr glancy2009 has no good response to this?
Gay rights advocates have invented a right and now they claim that it is constitutionally protected.
Do people have the *right* to invent *rights* that take away the *rights* of others so that they can feel better about their own issues?
You like to hide behind this idea of "conservatives are taking away minority rights" but where did this so-called right come from?
whosjohngalt004 1 year ago
@whosjohngalt004

MrOlderandwiser 1 year ago
@MrOlderandwiser

What rights? What rights are the majority taking from the minority by not allowing neutered marriage?
whosjohngalt004 1 year ago
@whosjohngalt004: I could also ask you the same question. What rights are we taking from you? Gay marriage won't be taking away any of your rights, just like interracial marriages didn't take away any rights from same-race couples. Really, I've never understood that logic. And it's not about redefining society either: we are not on a mission to undermine American values, simply, we want to make it more just. Which is why we insist on having our civil rights recognized.
Skulander1 1 year ago
It's truly sad to see NOM's anti-democratic, anti-constitutional tactics. Hopefully people will wake up to such bigotry, homophobia and hatred and will realize that NOM is simply breeding fear into the population. They are controlling and dangerous, plain and simple.

Last I checked this is a land where it is your choice to practice whatever religion you want, but it sounds like you feel religion should be imposed on everyone...are you afraid the homos are going to come get you...fireballs going to come from the sky... and to @whosjohngalt004 what rights will you lose?
PyRoMD17 1 year ago
"the minority right in question" has a most profound effect on everybody!! There is no mention in God's word about 2 men or women procreating. It is humanly impossible ...atleast naturally. God's design is 1 man, 1 woman through marriage. Deviation from His plan has a profound effect on humanity. History has proven that!

It's already backfiring.
whosjohngalt004 1 year ago
@whosjohngalt004 The majority has never been given the right to trump the rights of the minority. The judges have a duty to follow the constitution, which clearly separates between church and state. You can believe in whatever you want. What you CANNOT do, however, is discriminate against other people just because your religion tells you so, or because you feel like it. You actually have to prove why it's necessary to discriminate, something NOM hasn't been able to do.
Skulander1 1 year ago
You do the civil rights movements harm to compare gay marriage to Black segregation and women's rights. "All men are created equal" does not mean "you can call whatever you want marriage if you really want to." There are too many major differences between a gay relationship and a true marriage to combine them. People can't create a "right" to whatever they want. I can't create a right to be called American Indian so I can get special govt funding.
whosjohngalt004 1 year ago
@whosjohngalt004
ridiculous comment.
The comparison is simply the Majority Vs. Minority.
The people didn't want interracial marriages or blacks serving in the military or women having equal rights. If it wasn't for a few 'activist judges', the laws would be the same now.
I assume you are aware that the sky didn't fall when those judges awarded equal rights to all humans even though the bible didn't agree.
glancy2009 1 year ago
@whosjohngalt004

But all that has to change b/c some judges think they know better?
whosjohngalt004 1 year ago
@whosjohngalt004
Minorities didn't take the majority vote away. The vote shouldn't have happened in the first place.
I am very sorry that you would choose to make your children grow up in a world where it is OK to discriminate against different people but I for one would like my children to grow up being taught that everyone is equal regardless of how they live their lives.

Skulander1 1 year ago
@Skulander1 I agree with you 100% BUT the momons that practice polygamy get excommunicated from the church. They only did it when so many men were drafted off to war and women and children were left without man, so with the permission of the man's wife he would marry and take care of another family as well as his own.

glancy2009 1 year ago
@MaySin92 Thanks for this commenty May. Indeed, that is true. Polygamy is no longer widely practiced with the Mormon faith itself. My comment was simply to point out the irony of charging gays and lesbians of wanting to promote polygamy and polygamous marriages, when it's that same community which gave so much money for Prop HATE in California. Gays and lesbians do NOT support polygamy, as I'm sure you are aware. This is another lie promoted by a few religiosu activists against us...
Skulander1 1 year ago
When did equal rights become an imposition? Come on now, honestly. Why is it that african americans and women can have all these rights but gays can't. Segregation was abolished a long time ago and now the gay community is being segregated as well. Why on Earth is it just so impossible to get it through these people's heads that we have the same BASIC INALIENABLE HUMAN RIGHTS as everyone else in the Earth. Why do we get treated differently?
MaySin92 1 year ago
Out of control judges imposing their own values on the bench? You know what, Brian, Maggie, NOM and other: YOU are the ones imposing YOUR values on us. YOU are the minority telling the majority how to think, how to act, YOU are the one spreading prejudices and lies at all cost, just from preventing 2 loving individuals from getting their civil rights.

Skulander1 1 year ago
Out of control judges? What is going on here is out of control religious activism, hatred, prejudices and homophobia that is going on here. Brian, Maggie and NOM are the biggest threat to the moral foundation of society by propagating lies and fometing religious extremism. After we get marriage equality, we'll need much tougher laws against bullying in schools, much tougher laws against hate crime. There are more batlles to be waged: we'll not led a loud ulta--religious minority decide for us.
Skulander1 1 year ago
Oh My God..
You make me sick!
glancy2009 1 year ago
It's not your place to decide what is right as far as law is concerned. There is SEPARATION of CHURCH and STATE. Now please tell me why you people keep spouting off about how homosexuality is wrong in the eyes of "god"? This has no place in state proceedings. Homosexuality is not wrong. People are born this way and make better parents than any of you closed minded people. Did you forget that the bible says not to judge others? You tell this to other people, now live up to it yourself.
orangebuggie17 1 year ago
Oh, and for another record: the Constitution is based on the separation of church and state, NOT on any religious views, Christian or otherwise.
Skulander1 1 year ago

Thanks to Brian & Maggie and all the myriad others who stand tall against the vile face of perversity!

@GatheringStorm999 Yes. Christianity - and especially the 10 Commandments - are the moral foundation of western society and western law.
MrOlderandwiser 1 year ago
I think we need to realize that these judges have no authority to make any ruling WHATSOEVER on marriage. Marriage is a private covenant between two people, and the government has no right or authority to regulate, legislate, or define the institution AT ALL. Privatize marriage and do it ASAP
ASonOfLiberty1776 1 year ago
Ok, seriously. People have to stop talking about activist judges. They're not!!! How can someone presenting facts, which are known for some time, be termed activist? These facts do not suit NOM, who has not been able to present any kind of credible facts in court: so be it. But they're facts nonetheless. It has nothing to do with activism. If anyone's an activist, it's NOM, with its lies, hatred and religious bigotry.
