Thank you. I have been wondering for years what happened to Howard. I was in the 24th CES.I was an airman, masonry specialist. We also took care of Albrook.I was 17 when I arrived from Iowa.I was there sept.'75-feb' 77. Really to young to appreciate it.Still, it was probably the highlight of my life. Thank you so much for the footage,I think you even caught my barracks, south of the bowling alley. So sad about the condition.
as you entered there was a one story officers community for air force personell and then TLF, the yellowish 4 plexes. Farfan was a navy one story housing area that was farther down. I lived in the first house on the first street, right across from the park in farfan for 6 years. The park was shaded by huge oaks, it had a big bojillo and a mango tree next to it. The best 6 years of my life for sure. This video is awesome. K-50, the jungle, the combat shows for the kids..ahh memories.
The pool that shows in the video is no longer that nasty hahaha. It went back to what it used to be. Dell has its call center there. So if you ever call Dell customer service the call is received here in Panama. Maybe I will record a video some day and post it online so you guys can see Howard renewed :). I would like to see more of your videos. Its kind of interesting to go back to these old unforgetable memories.
Now I would like to mention that it is sad that Howard remained pretty much like a ghost town even 10 years later. However, this has all changed. I don't know if you are aware that Howard has become what is called now Panama Pacific, which is and will be one the most prestigious area of Panama and worldwide (busineswise) Lot of these old houses have been remodeled for sale as they did in Albrook and Clayton.
Hey there! I just saw this video and I enjoyed it a lot. I'm a zonian from the balboa area, but I had sibblings who lived in Howard and Cocoli before the bases were closed. I still live in Panama with my parents. I'm a college student so I can only remember my experiences from when I was a little boy in balboa elementary and when I used to stay at my aunt's in howard.
My dad was finishing up a game in the bowling alley the hour of invasion in 89. He was told to finish and then report for duty. Spent several hours in kevlar, armed with an M-16 under a dumptruck on the Runway watching the AC-130's wreak havoc on targets near Panama city. 24th Civil Engineering Squadron I think. I wish Howard never closed down!!
I lived at the first house right next to the playground in from 72 to 75 we used to slide down the hill on cardboard boxes. Awesome, this was a great video. I was 7 years old. Wow!!
Did you have any trouble accessing any of the areas at Howard? I lived at house 304 in Ft.Kobbe as a kid from 85-87 and never had the chance to go back. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I've heard the panamanians don't like people driving around the abandon areas. I'd love to go back, great memories.
But there were a couple of buildings that belonged to the marines....what as the name of their instillation? They had a big green (I think) building with a post exchange. I lived on howard from 70-72 we were the first families to move into the new housing.
I love this video. I as well use to live in this same house when I was 13-15 years old back in 1973. I also went to curundu JH and Howard elementary. My father was the commander of Det 2 ARRS.
@CitizenZero1 Farfan was actually on the interior of Howard. I meant the base that was on the right before you turn into the main entrance at Howard which was a left turn. I remember there use to be fruit stands on the left on the main drag before you made the right into Howard. Farfan was walking distance of the new housing on Howard because I used to walk to the pool.
@CitizenZero1 about 2:12 you were speaking about someone living in on of the 4bdrooms on the hill before you get to the clinic who were you talking about?
Another great effort on your part! Do you remember which black sand beach was in the video? I felt a real tugging at the heart strings watching your video (again). Thanks for taking the time to share this history with us. Absolutely outstanding!
Thank-You for posting this video! I was in Fort Kobbe, Panama in 1989, for two years. We use to party near or at...Howard AFB. It's Great seeing the place again !
Awsome video, brought back a lot of memories. I was there from '96-'99. At 1:09 I actually caught a glimpse of the dorms I was living in at the time. We had some crazy dorm parties back then. Man I miss those days!
Thank you so much for posting this video. I lived in Panama between 1972-4. I really miss the place. Seeing the decay shown in much of your video makes me very sad (as you). I think I'm going to see about going back and maybe restoring some of those great old buildings. Thanks again.
Thank you so much. I lived at Ft. Kobbe 48-52.......The pool was opened during that time......what a waste. We lived at the bottom of Kobbe Hill in one of the older stick built houses. What a paradise. Thank you again.

Very cool video! We lived at 158 Rencher as well from 1968 until 1971. I remember the playground across the street and I used to ride my bike down Commander's hill and skid in the carport! There was a nice Avocado tree up there near the playground. At the top of the stairs my sisters wrote their name (and date) when they did a concrete repair. I wonder if you ever noticed it?
@shepoopi Just posted a new vid. I'm not sure about the names. We did the same thing. I loved going down that hill on my bike. Good to hear from you. what are the odds?
Wow, I can't believe things look the same. My house was the one in the distance when you are at the pool. I cant remember the address for the life of me. 1989-1994.
We used to ride our bikes down that hill that was the Commander guy's house if I'm not mistaken, anyone remember the frogs you used to hear there at night and the massive toads? :)
I remember a kid named Stephan Higgs and this guy Tim and his family that lived on our street by the clinic, the kid that had the "blue max" bike across the street, the blond girl that lived on the end of our street, damn so many great memories there
Wow really cool vid!! we lived there for about 5 years my dad worked up at this clinic I remember a girl named peppermint patty? and a guy who had a 65 Mustang worked there also, we lived at the bottom of the hill first house on the left :) anyone remember the "Beacon"? or the bike/jogging trail behind the horse stables?we uses to climb to the beacon daily lol! dude I had so many great memories living there thanks alot for posting this!! My God. What memories. I lived on Howard from 1972-1975. I remember the commisary, the gas station(gas was .25 cents a gallon. I we used jump the gate at the pool at night, climb up the diving platfrom and jump into the dark pool. You would hit bottom. My brother Milton who passed away loved the bowling alley. I live in 179. The house was near the post office and we would hang out in the caf. Played football on the parade field. The bus would take me to Balboa HS. Best days of my life. Thanks

@RCartagena1 Yeah, growing up there definitely made up one of the best parts of my life. I'm glad you liked it. I have more footy, but I don't have the equipment to do anything with it right now.

Kobbe Hills will offer luxury homes and high-end hotels.
I grew up on Howard AFB in the mid 1960's and it was a "Leave it to Beaver" paradise for kids growing up. It was a beautiful place back then when the Air Force ran things. To see those old two story base houses begin to decay was poignant about the passage of time and how everything eventually fades away and is forgotton. I will always have fond memories of Panama and Howard AFB. Also, the fishing was spectacular around Gatun Lake. You can never go back.
On a serious note, the Panamanian Government could have taken better care of the Forts and Bases from the videos I've seen... Such as taking better care of the streets, keeping the properties clean...
I can't thank you enough for posting this. I thought I would never see my old home again. In alot of ways I feel like my heart is still back there on that base. Thank you friend. We were the lucky few to have enjoyed such a beautiful place.
They have a Dell computer location there now...
