On another version (the highwaymen) Willie DOES pronounce Kankakee as KANKakee, like we do up here in Northern Illinois. Very funny. And I was born in Texas, so I could see how one might pronounce it the way it looks, without the Illinois dialect, which I hated when I moved here.

I LOVE Willie and I LOVE Arlo !! But being from Crook County, I am partial to Steve. From what I googled (and I actually found an interview by Arlo - which is awesome), Arlo was playing late in Chicago and was on his way out of the club when this kid came up to him with a guitar.

Arlo said okay I will listen if you buy a beer .. and the rest is history~ I find it interesting the way Nelson pronounces Kankakee vs. the way Goodman pronounces it. We say KANKakee

and WN says CANkakee. Luv,me

Other train songs worth listening to include Folsom Prison Blues, Orange Blossom Special & Hey Porter by the GREAT Johnny Cash, also several by Boxcar Willie. For a change of pace, I'd like to direct you to "Morningtown Ride" by The Seekers. I loved that song as a kid- it's almost like a lullaby. Judith Durham had the most amazing voice!
