ive tried getting my sister to film something similar with the same result...they just dont have any idea about framing a shot and what they're actually filming.
@ReliableSunPower well im certainly not trying to disagree with you but right when i read that i thought of one movie, the hurt locker, that was directed by a chick. whether you think thats a good movie is up to you though.
@ReliableSunPower yeah when i was testing a home built model rocket, i had my sister and my mom film it in case someone messed up their filming, guess what? they both said their cameras were recording and after the launch i found out that neither of them were. But my dad always does a great job by himself filming my rocket launches.
@Finnrocketman It really is nice to get a male to operate the camera. Then you can do what you need to do without the distraction of wondering if the video will turn out. LOL

@RusskieHunter13 No, this was a long time ago. I don't currently have a plane. There is an awesome video on Youtube with a helicopter with multiple missiles. I think it is called helicopter attacks cameraman.
@MrBlueblazed Do you really think they haven't thought of this already? Besides, what can they possibly do with a little tiny estes rocket? They already suck at shooting, mortaring and rocketing...... I just don't think there is a real applicable purpose even if the wanted to....
@mrlipux It's not a wireless connection. It is simply a standard battery to igniter wire connection with aligator clips broken by an on/off switch toggled by a servo.
My dad and I did that in 1976, shooting from a Sig Kommander with Enya 45, and Kraft Sport Series radio. Two rockets, one slung under each wing. In our case, the covering was Coverite, with Perfect Paint. No charring there, either.
No videos, of course. We didn't have an 8mm video camera.
That was before it was made illegal by AMA.
So, how do you cover yourself for liability? I hope you're not at the Torrey Pines Gulls field. They're AMA.
@boulderdsvo No, gliders were never my thing. This is an old video but ironically, not due to the rocket, I damaged a car with that plane the same day as my other video which is a response to this video. My homeowners insurance covered the $800 dent in the person's minivan.
@mormon97 Excellent question. It actually didn't do anything other than leave a residue. As I recall that plane is a solid core wing so more mass dissipates more heat than an open rib wing would. Also, there is 70MPH of airflow taking even more heat away and the actual exposure is a split second.
Run a wire from a 9 volt battery to the ignitor. On the positive wire put a simple on/off switch and use a free channel to use a servo to trip the switch.
Not silly string, that was a standard Estes rocket with a shock cord and a wrapped parachute. Of course we didn't find the rocket afterwards but it was a slim chance that we would recover it and reuse it.
I was surprised that it didn't affect the flight characteristics at all. Check out the guy who launches multiple rockets from a PTS Mustang. This video is old, I take credit for being one of the first, but his looks awesome.

@mrlipux It's not a wireless connection. It is simply a standard battery to igniter wire connection with aligator clips broken by an on/off switch toggled by a servo.

cyanide444 3 years ago
Estes model rocket, rocket engine, and a servo flipping an on/off switch. The engine ignites when current is passed through a little sparkler ignitor.
ReliableSunPower 3 years ago
Er...so can you explain how the current ignites this...is there shock sens material? What is a servo? sorry, I just have been trying to do this for a while.
cyanide444 3 years ago
A servo is basically what moves the rudder and such on r/c planes and helicopters. Basically an electric 'piston' of sorts...it moves up and down.
Estes rockets have little igniter pieces that stick inside of the rocket engine material (which has a hole pre-dilled through it when you buy them). The material heats up when the battery current runs through it, and it ignites the rocket engine.
