I think this is my new favorite channel! Are you a Hydro engineer? I heard you mention "head" and most other engineers don't know what that means unless they are Civil or Hydro. I am a Civil Engineer and absolutely love this channel good job!
Thanks man! I am a mechanical engineer who lives on a farm. The farm provides so many practical engineering applications from Fluids, to Heat Transfer to Machine Design, It is a big play ground for an engineer! I just enjoy trying to make things work but I also have to understand how they work! My Best friend in College was a Civil Engineer otherwise known as a dirt major @ RPI. : )
Great Video Scott! You've got the Mark Walburg look going for sure! Lol! Thanks for all the info you're sharing. It's inspiring my friend~ God Bless, Sootch
Your right solar is expensive and you and I don't live in the solar sun shine capital of the Southwest either. Still good to have any where from 20% to 33% (maybe even 50%) in solar; then have some wind (unless you live in a wind dead zone); then hydro or geothermal (again unless none); and if all else fails biomass (in your case wood). I was wondering what you do or plan in the way of renewal? Such as replanting or (my favorite) coppicing....
E-775 love your ingenuity, thanks for sharing the concepts with the rest of world. Wondering if you have or are exploring any biomass concepts for driving turbines for electricity and heating issues? Figure with having both humans and live stock on your premise - there might be some possibilities. Take care and thank you!
@TRAVERZULU3 I use all the cow manure I can get for my gardens so I don;t have any to spare for making electricity. I am using trees for biomass for electricity and transportation and cooking etc etc. Thanks for your comment!
@SheepDogWTX I have a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering from RPI ( Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) and I worked in the Tire Industry ( Product development engineer for Michelin) and now I am a Pastor and a Farmer! Long story!!!! God Bless!
what's the price range for that bad boy, and I was also thinking ...how much wood would you go through per day, and whether you have deep cycle batteries/inverter so that you doing have to run it all day long? Thanks for the intro on the topic. I just put in standby Kolher 12K running on propane, and since have my 8K gasoline... and thanks for the vid you did on the woodgas stove ... my portable gas stove died after 10 ten, so this will my replacment
@carmas54 To get one now it is 10K. I paid 5k. A lot of money I know but it does a lot of things. I do not plan on running all day. Long enough to get done what needs to be done, and then can be started up at anytime for emergency purposes. I also have the 12k diesel. I run diesel or vegatable oil in that one. I have run it for 5 days straight. Got a pretty good storm coming and I am changing the oil this afternoon!
About solar, are you planning to run your generator 24/7 or do you have a battery bank and inverter that you charge with the generator? I have been off-grid for over 10 years and sell/install solar power for a lot of my neighbors, so if you have any questions I can help.
@Derf2258 I do not plan on running 24/7 but I can If I need too. I do have several solar panels set up to charge deep cycle batteries and a couple of inverters but not tied in to my house. Don't get me wrong if I could I would like to have a nice grid-tie inverter and a field full of panels but I decided to go the route of gasification for power and transportation. I would definitely be interested in what you have to offer in the area of solar power.
Every one need to look at renewable source for there power, here in the desert southwest sun is in abundance so solar and wind work very well. Wood out here is kind of lacking but every one should look at there own area.
i was wondering a couple things is wind power a viable supplemental power source. i know that wind generators have gotten alot cheaper . and do you get alot of fouling in your engine from the wood gas?
@jeeperscreepers71 Wind is great but not where I live. I live in a place that has less then 4m/s annual wind speed at 80 meteres. It is the worst. go to windpoweringamerica.gov/wind_maps.asp and click on the map for where you live and ses how it is for your area. No fouling at all so far. I keep the filters clean!
Gasification is my next set of projects to use along side the PV as well as alcohol made from beets and potatoes I'm growing. Having options is what its all about and I like to cover all the bases, not just PV. I find the technologies really compliment each other. Keep up the great work and I will be writing you about the question you asked me.
You are right solar is costly and will not heat your home. Solar is the way to go for small loads such as lighting and refridgeration. The cool thing is you are dead silant and no smoke or smells. I do keep a backup generator for days of overcast or heating water or running large loads. I love your videos and look foward to future posts. Thanks for sharing.
I was looking into Methanol actually as most engines can be converted to run it. Most gas engines run 12: 1 and Methanol runs 9:1 . I have a buddy that has a couple thousand gallons of methanol and he has given me 4 gallons to do a test. I am going to start with a 4-wheeler or a lawn mower. I have a book on making methanol but haven't done it. My wife wants me to make a still as well for making alcohol for disinfectant. We have made wine and beer in the past so I think we can do it.
I've got enough cash to set up 1/2 of the solar power I need for my home and aquaponics setup, but I wanted your input on what you might think of a dual purpose still to make e85 ethanol and whiskey. I could run a generator on the e85 and you know what to do with whiskey lol.
Cant wait until the garden videos please be pacific! I've seen so many channels show their gardening techniques but I've honestly seen little succeed and actually teaching something
Found your channel from one of SouthernPrepper's vids and glad I did. Caught up on all your past videos a couple days ago. Thanks for sharing the knowledge. Some great things you have going on there.
I think that the track would fall off before I arrived to your site. There is a resort hotel in the mountains about 45 miles away that uses underground for both cooling and heating. The remarkable thing about it is that it was built just after WW2.
@biguy525 Mechanical Engineer with a Masters in Robotics and Mechanism design. Could you bring a Trackhoe over here? LOL - I covet trackhoes. I want to build a undergound A/C system this spring and need to dig a trench 20' deep and 150' long for my coils. Take care!
Hey, I wanted to thank you for what you have been sharing. I watched the vid w/ you Don and David. I speak with them as well and they are great guys. I wish I had have you talents and knowledge.
