I'm not a sailor myself, but I've always wanted to give Tall Ships a try. There's just something that seems so... Wonderful about it? I don't think "wonderful" describes perfectly how amazing sailing a tall ship would be. Hopefully one day my time will come!
I'd love to learn to sail a tallship, climbing in the looks like a blast. My good friend who sails atleast five hours every day is named Soren, I found this kind if ironic.
This video is amazing!! I really admire people who can sail out of sight of land in often horrendous weather....I am a chicken. I love the ocean, love the sights and sounds, but I don't think I could ever make an ocean crossing on a sailing vessel. I really admire you sailors!!
I'll stick with 50 to 80' of carbon fiber, this is a foreign world to me. Looks like good times I must admit but these things tend to be sailtraining ships and as such lack the amounts of rum required by me and the rabble I sail with. A pint a day per sailor should do the trick, sure we drink more than that but... this should be the minimum provision. Anyone know just how fast these beasts go?
no words can describe the feeling of sailing. the smell of the fresh air, the sway of the vessel, the roar of the waves, and the satisfaction of working in harmony with nature. i've learned a lot from sailing (i've been sailing ever since i was born) and hope to one day hop aboard a real tall ship and learn more. :) great vid, it really made my day.
I have been sailing mocern yachts for a while now, but I miss the charm of traditional sailing - 2,6 HEAVE !!!!!
It's great when you get these old girls in big winds and ease out the sheets, fill the squares, waves comming over the deck and draining out the scuppers - every sailor should experience this sort of thing - even non sailors for that matter.
Didn't mean to say they should excactly copy XIXth century nautical technology; that would indeed be too costly. There are new techniques however, by which sailing ships could be build and engineered, based on this old technology. Imagine a bulk carrier or an oil tanker, with 8 - 12 huge carbonfibre masts; gaffle rigged, with automated and computerized devices to set and lower sails. That's what I had in mind.
Fregate rigged tall ships are beautifull, but uneconomical.
The Soren Larsen is eco friendly in her voyaging. These ships would still cost a fortune to build and crew these days. Note she is now in the tropics west from Tahiti.

Amazing technology, that is enviromentally friendly. If the fuel prices keep on rising they will build new sailing ships, because wind costs nothing.

@TallshipSoren Ya know they would pay for themselves in the fuel they would save their owners.
