  • when you say "2 screws there, and there", you don't point to them. so which screws. then you say this is the adjustment screw, and you don't point which one that is either.

  • Just done this today on my old fat ps2. The laser was sitting there jumping up and down (skipping) on retail discs at the inside of the disc while slowing the disc down then speeding up again and sometimes repeating this once or twice and taking about 30 - 40 seconds to boot a game and then reading properly after it did. After doing this it takes about 10 seconds or less to boot a game, thanks a lot!

  • ear ear ear ear ear 1:03

  • @rebeccajanelove what happens is the game starts up normally as does and you get to the start menu but when you go to press start, it doesn't work, it does this for some games buts others work fine so i am not sure what the problem is!

  • I did that and movies on DVD's are finally working smoothly :D thank you !

  • Nice job dude,,, I tried to fix mine, bought a brand new laser on ebay but the console work just secs... i think i calibrate too much or something!

  • Fake accent...

  • when i play some games, the game loads fine, by the remote doesn't work as i press start but it doesn't work, does anyone know what the problem is?

  • @slrMHProjects I'm not 100% sure but your referring to the controller yes? you tried replacing the controller....If that doesn't work then you need to replace the controller port in your ps2. How to fix common ps2 problems.wmv on here shows you how to do that. ^^ Hope that helps you.

  • Thanks, I think it works nicely :D

  • Gonna try it, I mean the laser works, but poorly.

  • cant get blue bottoms or regular games to work now!is there a limit that u can turn the sensor things?PLEASE RESPOND! THIS IS MY ONLY SOURCE OF ENTERTAINMENT!

  • i subscribed to u and liked this video because it made my ps2 read whatever it was desighned for1 THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

  • This worked for me and now I can read Blue Ps2 Discs but I'm stil lhaving Disc Read Error on Silver/Normal Ps2 Discs

  • Im having the same problem as rexy... kinda annoying.

  • mine isn't even detecting the disk :( (i put the disk in it is the same as having none in to the ps2)

  • If you have a Slim PS2 than I recommend doing the old fashion way, taking a cotton bub, dab it in alcohol and clean the lens. This is pretty much guaranteed to work.

  • This worked 100%. I tryed the rotate the cog to raise up the laser tooth by tooth and it didnt work. I cleaned it out which i think was a good thing anyways but this worked 100% and i wish i had tried it first. Thanks and and a browny point to you. :0D

  • I hate how all these videos are in low lighting and shit. it's helpful but fuck.. whatever i hope this works

  • hey help plz

my laser is making a soft sooofftttt clicking sound and the disc motor is stopping then spinning then stopping then spining

  • Before hand, my ps2 used to need a minute to read the disc before playing. It couldn't read blue-backs the whole time i owned it (it's a hand-me-down console). Now, it loads normally, and that's when i tested it with my 1 blue-back game.

HOWEVER! My ps2 is making a humming sound. Not like it's normal, but....i think i can hear the laser working. Is that normal? Maybe i'm not used to the sound of a working ps2?

  • nice video. man

  • my. laser. doesnt. even. look. like. yours. -crys-

  • whats the song called @ 7:40min?

  • my laser doesnt even look like urs =.=

  • YEEESSS!!!! It really worked i'm very happy to prolonged the life of my PS2 Slim by the way it also worked on a slim type PS2, I just open it up, turn the 2nd screw the DVD type at the back of the lens then turn it just a LITTLE to the right (maybe if you turn it too much might burn the cd) then its fixed, and tested it to a Gran Turismo 3 PS2 cd to diagnose( the gran turismo 3 cd dont work before) then its fixed, now i can use my old CDs again......Thanks again it really helped alot.

  • Thanks a bunch.

  • SKEWS R EAR EAR EAR EAR EAR EAR and EAR

  • @cooliyo3000 There was 8 screws.

  • GUYS HOW ABOUT IN PS2 SLIMLINE, IS IT POSSIBLE TO CALIBRATE THE LENS OF A PS2 SLIMLINE CONSOLE ??

sorry about my noobish question... I just want to know... because my modded ps2 slim can't read my brand new original dvd game, however some of my old pirated games are still working fine and some of the new pirated games of mine didn't working.. Is this because of my Lens ?? should I Calibrate it or go for the Lens replacement ???

  • @musjay YYEEESSS!!!!

  • In my case, the point that you're at around 6:40, my disc is still making click noises and changing speeds and not moving in a fluent motion like yours. I have no idea where to go from there. The disc isn't moving so the diagnosis isn't going to be very effective.

  • ia,ia,ia,ia,ia,ia,ia and ia xD rofl

  • i got a disc read error in my PS2 when I tried this. how do I know if it's the right angle and if the games work? is it possible that I burned my games as well? I saw laser burns on the back of my games. well, three games at least that I don't play much. NBA 2004, Samurai Warriors 2 and Capcom Vs. SNK 2. Need help. Thanks!

  • ahahahahhahahah he talks like lil gayne

  • does anyone know how to fix the reading error that is caused by the disk making screeching and other unhealthy sounds while being read?

  • Thank you SO much. Now My Ps2 is fixed. I was about to throw it out

  • Thanks alot. Now my ps2 is messed up. All i wanted it to do was read cd's better and faster :'( Is there anyway I can fix this.???

  • Thank you very much .!!!!! im very happy Lol . thanks thanks .

  • Ma sto stronzo m'ha fatto bruciare il motorino della lente!! Ma vaffanculo va!!

    HAhahaha!!

  • Hi,

I did the same pot adjustment detailed in this video to my PS2. It fixes the disc read errors, but too much voltage can make the DVD drive unstable.

For example, it completely messes up the timing in Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance. I did this tweak and now the voices in codec calls, freeze for about 20 seconds, randomly.

Silent Hill 2: Directors Cut, also locked up at the opening scene on a new game.

I lowered the voltage slightly, and timing is fine; silent hill 2 and MGS2 substance work

  • @DriftingTrigger

Raising the voltage means overclocking your DVD drive, making it run faster.

Certain games rely on exact timing that breaks with too much extra voltage. Games are generally tolerant, and will allow slight gain without problem (afterall, different PS2 consoles use different lasers, with different settings and voltages, etc). But there's a theshold, which you cross when you over-tweak the voltage.

So it doesn't only reduce the laser's life. It can ruin the timing in some games.

  • @DriftingTrigger

My PS2 is a PAL console, SCPH-30003 by the way.

Yes, that one. A version 3 console. The one that gets ridiculously HOT. I bought it second hand, and it was completely worn out anyway, but I did this fix a while ago (with the initial aforementioned problems), and now it works fine. Almost like new.

My PSX discs read like wonders, and PS2 CD/DVD's also read like new. Dual-Layer games are a bit slower to read, but that's only natural.

  • @DriftingTrigger

Suffice to say, Spyro the Dragon for PSX did NOT work on my PS2 before I did this tweak. Now I enjoy playing it very much :)

  • @DriftingTrigger

    Also, on that note...

    TechDUMPOfficial,

Do you have an original PS1 console? You could do a POT adjustment guide for that too. I did this on my PS1 too; maybe I could do my own guide...

Just a suggestion for you though, if you have the old grey beastie :)

  • @DriftingTrigger

Also, I guess that your PS2 is modded, since in this video you throw a disc down that was a backup, and in hte console.

Well, about "gain": with crappy media, the PS2 laser needs to work harder, so it will automatically adjust the voltage, regardless of your POT setting.

I mentioned that MGS2 freezed when I tried to glitch the first time (it was an original copy); the backup copy I made, freezed before I did the tweak, since it was burned onto a crappy medium

  • @DriftingTrigger

Also, if you're a complete fag and decide to rip on me for my last comment about playing from a backup I made of a game I legally own, I present to you...

    Fair Use!

  • How far clockwise should I turn the pots? thanks.

  • How far should I turn the pots clockwise? Thanks.

  • ok i see you did had the problem and fix it , ok i did not know what kind of video at frist but now i do. cool nice job.

  • big ass ps2 wow it got alot of shit in it. i wonder do you have the kind that you get problem loading games.

  • dude i have a problem when i do this then my ps2 reads the disk then it starts speeding up then slowing down then speeding up and then slowing down ect.

    what do i do?!

  • Comment removed

  • Hay nice vid? One little question. When i tried without closing the chasis i found out that the motor(that rotates the disc) sometimes stopped then it rotated again and so on until it stopped showing the disc read error? is it normal when laser is not adjusted or the motor is rubbish?

  • Hmm...when I put mine back together, the laser arm got stuck and now will not move past about the middle of a disc, even forcing it by hand. Any idea what might be wrong?

  • thanks :D

  • hey i bought a ps2 from an apperant "friend" that said it was working before he handed it to me but when i first turned it on and tried to play a game it didnt work. so i tried adjusiting the white clicky wheel i spend hours just turning that god awful thing every notch non of it worked. i cleaned the lazer with alcohol. still doesnt work do you have any other solution then as to take the lazer off? i dont have a screw driver to turn that screw that lets you remove the lazer

  • If i knew how to do this back in summer 0f 2005 i could of saved $150 that i spent on the ps2 slim my fat quit reading dvd rom games and would only read the blue backed cd rom disks my slims still working fine

  • I got a ps2 slim and gives this error and also a cliking noise

  • my ps2 is a ps2 "lite".I do the same thing?

  • adaptuotas pydaras

  • 8 screws, ear, ear, ear, ear, ear, ear, ear, ear :P

  • Awesome video. Not sure if it was the laser or the laser arm, which helped more but laser arm was extremely loose. Thank you soo much for your help!!

  • its very hard really to calibrate a ps2 correctly mine its actually spoiling discs (destroyng discs) and i tried to calibrate it like 4 times .-- the

2 times it read them but it keep damaging discs

    2 it doesnt read them

its a full puzzle to calibrate a ps2 correctly

  • thank you so much, been trying to get my ps2 working for hours and this worked like a charm!

  • i have a ps2 slim but the laser doesnt have 2 metal ive washed it before not by water ^^ i opened the cover and i clean it with a cottondoes tht work?beacuse it works for me a little

  • nice vid man

what is the name of the song at 7:39 ?

  • nice vid man

but what is the name of the song at 7:39?

  • tnx bro!!

  • My V3 PS2 stops reading DVD discs (PS2 games & DVD movies), but it reads CDs (PS1 games & Audio discs) well. I tried to setup the DVD potentiometer very carefully, but it didn't help. I did never take apart such a laser unit like that, but i think there is only one laserdiode in the unit, accordingly if it works with CDs, then it have to work with DVDs, it hasn't gone bad. Any idea? Thank you.

  • @V10power560 mine done the same thing when i was 14 like a week after i got gta san andreas had to cut allot of grass to afford a slim and those work fine

  • Ps2 is tottally crap !!!!

  • Nice video man, cheers. PS, is the techdump website still going at another url?

  • can you make this with the PS2 slim?

  • that really great man

  • How do you fix the PS2 disc drive Ribbon cable can it be fixed.....

  • i just fixed my ps2 by this video.thanks for your good video

  • "Eight screws which 'arr 'ere ere ere an ere"

    LOL accent

  • LOL I was thinkin the same thing

  • Wuah! Please help!

    At 4:17...

That doesn´t look like my laser!

It looks the same, but I hasn´t got the DVD and CD Bolts!!!

    Now my PS2 is open...and I can´t go further. :-(

  • it didnt look like mine too.but just keep the laser like in the video and do what he does.i did that and my ps2 is fixed

  • @MAMFAK2003

But my PS2 do not boot CDs.

So I must find this CD bolt on the laser...

  • great tips thanx man

  • I'm fairly certain my laser's fine. But for some reason when the laser tries to move in closer to the inside of the disc, it gets stuck and stops at the same point and makes vibrate-y "errrrr" noise.

    Any ideas?

  • replace the laser till end of his way and try again .if not fixed replace again

  • That was very helpful, I now have a working PS2 again, thanks man.

  • what if the optic stops reading in the midst of the game? in the beginning it was fine, but in the midst of the game, the optic suddenly stops reading?? what am i supposed to do with that?

  • Im not trying to be a smart ass or anything but you first had a silver back cd in your ps2 3:03(it didnt work 0.01)That disc should be running on the dvd laser4:20. then you took it apart and twisted the dvd laser NOT THE CD LASER5:30. Then you put it back together and tested it with the blue back disc (which should be running on the cd laser) so really the cd laser was working the whole time but the dvd laser wasnt working. My point is that you really didnt show us that the mod you used worked.

  • I used Gran Turismo 4 first off, then I put Gran Turismo 4 back in once I tweaked the laser.

It might've looked black/blue because of how dark it was in my room, and the tray is black.

  • screew eya eya eya eya eya eya eya great vid

  • my ps2 is like totally fucked, the laser skips and i have trouble getting the agle of the laser to stay at the setting i choose :( someone help me!?!

  • Did you lose the little springs that sid under the silver rails?

  • @vSEMIPR0v Try blowing canned air under the lens carriage there is a mirror underneath it. No need to adjust the white cog wheel.

  • Would doing this help my ps2 read games better?

I tried to play the PTMG edition of GTA sa today but the ps2 struggled to load up anything in the game and eventually the game stopped

  • one question, are the cd/dvd screws in the same order for all the fat lines? because your laser is a bit different than mine, and I turned a few degrees each screw, because my psx games wouldn't read at all, and my ps2 games wouldn't read from time to time. now my psx games work perfectly, but my ps2 games don't read. I tried screwing more the dvd screw, but it was already maxed out(after only a couple of degrees). does unscrewing CCW helps in some cases?

  • I think they changed the laser a little bit between the model revisions. I just fixed a V7 fatline and it had like a metal case round the laser instead of the black plastic one I have.

Also, you could try backing the CD pot. off a little bit, and winding the DVD one off a little bit. Sometimes you can put too much voltage to the laser and it doesn't read anything.

  • After this post my PS2 became at an unfixable state for me(the screws were damaged). So a friend of mine gave me his PS2 that also had DRE's. But I was able to calibrate his PS2 laser successfully, so now I have a working PS2, thanks!

  • Shit i fucked up my laser now i gatta buy a new one): they cost like 40 bucks

  • thanks, youre the first vid i've seen to explain what's actually going on.

  • do u knw ow to put the silver thing bak into the console not the rset nd power button one

  • jea the problem is that you did not move your screew at all.

  • yea he didnt. also he has no clue what those screws do. gain? what? probably focusing screws..

  • The are the gain potentiometers for the laser. They turn the voltage up and down so the laser can pick stuff up off the CD easier.

And I didn't have to move my screws, my PS2 reads discs fine.

  • where did you get that info?

  • I learned it myself because I used a process called trial and error.

  • so doed it work with ps2 slim?

  • How does this helps with reading disc? I havent tried it yet, but how will it works?

  • my ps2 stopped reading discs. =[ help please

  • what is the scph model number and date code of that ps2? It looks weird/different inside than the ones I've worked on.

    Good video!

  • ok iknow what the problem is the silver thing has gone off. I dont know what they are called, is there a way to insert them again??

  • u found out mate das wa i am tryna find lol cant find it..le me knw if u find it mate

  • and what should i do? O.o now the discs work but i cant start the ps2. is there some manual way of starting it without the buttons maybe?

  • ahhh it worked, but the plastic thing going to the button. I don't know what. But I started the playstation and it read the disc. But now the little buttons won't glow blue and green anymore or red...what did I do??? :(

  • Thanks a lot everyone! Good to see it helped you all...

  • the only one that actually works!!!

    well done my friend.

  • Good man. High five from New Zealand!

  • Ha ha. Good video.

  • 3:52 you touched the laser

  • Yeah, but I cleaned it before I rebuilt the system.

  • Thanks , I learned a lot there and I've got whole pile (7) of Disc read error state PS2s to fix up though the one i am using now i got working with just the help of a can of compressed air!

  • AAA

  • if this works i owe ya alot man

  • Cheers mate. Good luck"! :D

  • well im calibrating lasers hear in korea but not for ps2's or whatever player with a lens, lasers use for measuring in constraction,i have ps3 if its broken ill go back to my old ps2 and use what i learn from the video, theres no problem at all:)

  • ive learn a lot good explanation

  • Thanks a lot. Surprised you could understand what I was saying. I sure can't. :D
