my family used to own a pizzaria that was right next door to a video rental store. pretty much every week i would rent this movie and watch it. i honestly thought i would never see it again. thank you for uploading!!
I was thinking about a film involving a white seal and remember seeing a VHS box cover of it at a video store when I was little. I don't recall ever seeing it back then or any other time until just now though. I was in the mood to see this. I presume it's safe to say that this is and must be it. Anyway, thanks, I enjoyed it.
This story is enshrouded in a subtle Zionist message. The seals represent the Jewish diaspora in Europe at the end of the 19th Century (late 1800's) being "hunted" (persecuted) by "man" or Russia and other Europeans. Kipling is trying to inform his reader that perhaps the only place where the Jewish population will thrive and prosper without being persecuted is in Palestine.
@KantianEdifice You can find some "hidden message" in everything, if you wish. This is about seals. Lucky that Tolkien was still alive when someone came with theory of Mordor being USSR, and explained, that Mordor is Mordor only and nothing else.
Seals are seals and I wish seals have place to live without fear as much as they do. People are people, Zionists like anyone else.
In Heaven, St.Francis probably made a special spot for animals to rest upon, not that there never was a spot for them, just saying that He loved animals so much, he most likely made a very very special spot for them in Heaven.
That's not how he found the sea cow in the book. He was just about to go on another search, and he spotted a school of halibut, and since he needed the nutrition, he chased after them for miles. And he ended up finding the sea cow.
Yeah, this has a number of differences from the book. Most of them are cosmetic, but there are a few major ones. Like in the book he didn't chase off the men who skinned the other seals.
This is one of my favorite Chuck Jones cartoons. I like how he was more than just 'The guy who continued animating Looney Tunes' and really broadened his animation talents.
Films like 'The White Seal' and 'The Lion King' were studied in my animation class to teach how to make cartoon animals act and speak like humans without giving them human bodies and still retain their charm.
but it was funny how in the last scene it took him for ever to eat.. then when the white seal taped him on the head he just ate the whole thing i mean why didnt he do that in the first place?? xD
Due to overpopulation, as a result of no man hunting them, the seal clans fell to infighting that resulted in slaughter of proportions that even man had never seen. The End.
Wow that's morbid......with that logic, it's amazing how any species survived so many hundreds of years without man around to slaughter them and their natural predators
Man is, but the unnatural weapons they use and the hunting for pure sport isn't. Man is directly responsible for the highest rate of species extinction known (aside from the dinosaurs) including natural disasters, diseases, and every other natural cause.
Sea Lions don't need man to hunt them for their populations to stay healthy...
And it is a wonder that humans haven't caused many more creatures to become extinct. In the future we could virtually obliterate the majority of the species on earth single-handedly.
It's sad that some people can't get the point of the story. Humans decimating animal populations, either because we want to or because of indifference, is a travesty and destroys the natural world that we rely on for survival ourselves.
I was kind of wondering if they meant it to be a manatee or a dugong. I agree that neither species is as ugly as shown here, but the tail made me wonder - especially after they made the mistake of saying a basking shark would attack a seal. Hmm...
I know this isnt really on topic, but i googled the words 'sea cow', and along with this Steller's Sea Cow, i found this awesome picture of a giant bull head coming out of the water and eating a ship. Just in case somebody is interested in seeing something weird
You're right. It's Beethoven's "Pastoral Symphony" you heard at the end of the segment in Disney's "Fantasia" before the "Dance of the Hours" sequence.
I wasn't aware this story had even made it to film until I saw a comment while watching Rikki-Tikki-Tavi for the umpteenth time! Thanks for posting it.
BTW - a most excellent maritime music duo, William Pint and Felicia Dale, perform a haunting rendition of the poem that accompanies "The White Seal" in _The Jungle Book_, titled "The Beaches of Lukannon." It's on their album "Round the Corner," and you can find a short sound bite of it on Amazon.
Thank you for posting this! This was a very special movie to me when I was a little kid, and I haven't seen it since I was little, probably 15 years. Thank you!
