  • They should air this show on either BET, TV-One or Centric

  • What's so racist about this? All white folk live in luxury and all blacks live in shacks? This shouldn't sunrise or shock anyone,we are the 99%

  • @ta2fiend The only difference between this and Fat Albert was the race of the creators. White guy makes show protraying black people living in a junkyard and its racist, black guy does it and its classic childrens TV.

  • There was actually a live-action version of this cartoon..It was called Homeboys in Outer Space.

  • Hahahaha. This show was soooo racist. Funny 2watch and see how the animators thot of black folks. Think about it, producers approved and the tv execs said sure, why not. Funny

  • Didnt he play drums for Poison?

  • So the whole thing fuses Scooby-Doo, The Jetsons (or Jabberjaw, which might be a closer correlation), Speed Buggy, Fat Albert and The Cosby Kids, and Nipsey Russell. I don't find it particularly negative because I don't see anyone DOING anything negative, and there were lots of anthropomorphic-representation characters (like Rickety Rocket) who had exaggerated features and rather loud personalities. I would have to actually see a full episode to get what people are on about.

  • The hell is this?!?!? OMG I bet this lasted only 3 eps

  • wow...forgot all about this cartoon. At the time, we didn't think about how racist this bullshit was. WHY did the rocket have big ass lips?! And poor 'urban' kids in the future still playing in a junk yard? SUCH a Fat Albert rip off.....

  • Well there's one childhood memory shot down the drain. I thought I remembered this one as "Ricochet Rocket."

  • where are all the 16 eps of rickety rocket,

please putt all the eps online!!!

  • FUBU a clothing line w/ Fat Albert. I was thinking about making a clothing line w/ Rickety Rocket!

  • RICKETY ROCKET REALLY ROUSTS ROOTS REGARDING REPARATIONS; REPUBLICANS REFUSE, RECITING RECIDIVISM RATES REGARDING RICKETY ROCKET'S RATHER RAUCOUS RACE.

  • lawd we still in the junk yard. LOL

  • OMG! I cant believe I remember that!

  • Hey...it's good times in space!

  • Good Lord! I'd forgotten about this one. So many of these one season shows. Sadly in Canada we don't get boomerang so we have little chance of seeing stuff like this again.

  • To me is a Futuristic verson pf Speedy Buggy

  • Me and some friends actually seen this on Boomerang and I must say this was the worst cartoon ever made dawg! As black folks I almost glad they did get rid of this shit! However I'm glad they at least thought about us

  • I dont remember this cartoon.

I must of been watching Bugs Bunny when this crap was on.

  • of course the black people get the crappiest house, and rocket.

  • waw wonderful!! This intro is Sped Buggy, in space!! it's =.

  • RICKETY ROCKET, BLAST OFF!

  • I used to love watching this!

  • Actually Ruby-Spears got somewhat better "Goldie Gold and Action Jack" with Sam Rockwell Goldie Gold's Editor-In-Chief

  • Aside from the features of the characters, what I really liked from this show was the music by Dean Elliot.

  • As much as we love all these old cartoons, who was pitching these absolutely crazy ideas to the network execs? Imagine being the guy trying to sell this cartoon: "Yeah, it's set in the future, and this uh, rocket car is made out of old junk, and it comes to life... and has a big smiling mouth, and likes to say it's name a lot... `Rickety Rocket!' So, what do you think?"

  • I'm sure they probably said "How about Speed Buggy except with a Rocket and some black kids?"

    Cause Fat Albert was popular.

  • @princesstamika It basically was a Hybrid Speed Buggy and Fat Albert!

  • @AlanSessler

    YOU'RE HIRED! : D

  • They need to make Rickety Rocket live action movie with the cast of the Chapelle show. HA! is that Nipsey Russell doing the voice of Rickety?

  • Rickety Rocket BLAST OFF!!!!...wow what memories I had allmost forgot about this cartoon.

  • that's me EL COHETE DESTARTALADO

  • Oh my God... if Fangface was Ruby-Spears' Scooby Doo, this was their Speed Buggy, made by whatever staff they could poach from Filmation's Fat Albert department. It looks DIRE.

  • .....No Comment.

  • When I was living in San Diego back in '04 there was a Rickety Rocket marathon. I called off work to watch it with a big ass bowl of Count Chocula.

  • Yes Yes Ya'll, this was my joint right here, so glad some1 finnaly put this up... we didn't have that many black cartoons... good look.

  • Rickety Rocket was my favorite cartoon, after marriage comes the honeymoon.

  • Exactly what i think of every time i hear Rickety Rocket. I hear ya!

  • Finally, I found this cartoon. Thanx for posting.

  • This cartoon was good for the times, but I liked Mighty man and Yuck a lot better.

  • Yeah, they were cooler.

  • i was wondering what happened to this cartoon. I used to like it

  • Wow, I actually remember this cartoon. Lol, so wrong on so many levels - a hoopty rocket.

  • I love cartoons from the 70's/80's where a whole bunch of kids would have to solve a mystery.

  • Wow, I remember this show. I talk about it with my friends, and no one has any idea what I'm talking about. I remember it. Rickety Rocket Blast Off!

  • Buggy a Jato como ficou conhecido aqui no Brasil. Cosmo, Venus, Moleza e Queimado. O desenho era bem interessante

  • That's one of my favorite 1970s show

  • I didn't discover this cartoon til it aired on Boomerang around 2003/2004. I enjoyed it allot

  • LOL!I remember watching this cartoon! For some reason Rickey Rocket reminds me of Sinbad...

  • I'm inclined to believe that Rickety Rocket was removed because some of the plotlines made no sense and has very little to do with African-American prejudice. On the other hand, it's possible that might have been "urban" for some viewers. But that's just my humble opinion, such as it is.

  • The cartoon was dropped because the NAACP felt that it depicted Blacks negatively...Two examples. The main characters had exaggerated features while the other characters were draw anatomically correct. Also if the future was so clean and pretty, why were the main characters living in a junkyard? Ruby-Spears Animation started out making mistakes in addressing different cultures, but got better with Rubik and Mr. T.

  • The junkyard thing was the first thought that came to my mind too!

  • @thedrknghtno1

Fuck the NAACP. They just like to complain and make a racial issue out of everything where there is known. Why didn't the NAACP take issue with Fat Albert which depicted poor black kids all hanging out in a junk yard, also with exaggerated black facial features such as huge lips and even a buffoon type of speaking language. Could it be because Fat Albert was created by a black man named Bill Cosby?

  • @24Midnighttoker Read down below. Of course we can see that your life is filled with having a home-grown meth lab at home and watching "My Name is Earl"....

ill just wait til your hair burns up and the police find your house burned down, and youll blame it on the economy...

    idiot....

  • @thedrknghtno1

Your little rant addresses nothing in what I said about the NAACP and their hypocrisy on the issue of this cartoon.

  • @thedrknghtno1

    Thanx for the info.

  • @thedrknghtno1 wow, this cartoon just hurt my self esteem. RACIST

  • This only lasted 3 months on ABC when the Plastic Man Comedy-Adventure Show was 2 hours, by December Plastic Man was 90 minutes. Maybe the Rickety Rocket cartoon was dropped because of African American prejudice or something like that (but that didn't stop CBS with its long running Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids).

  • Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids was Cosby's project for getting his doctorate...to create educational programming. He based it on his childhood, did voices and had educational consultants from Harvard to help with the writing. Cartoons that have African-Americans were accepted IF they were created, produced and/or voiced by African-Americans. Rickety Rocket was not.

  • Most of the Ruby-Spears cartoons were anti-educational.

  • All of the main characters were voiced by black actors- black comic actor Al "Jocko" Fann was Rickety Rocket, black actor Bobby Ellerbee was Cosmo, black comic actor Johnny Brown [of Laugh-In fame] was Splashdown, black comic [and later adult film] actor John Anthony Bailey [of Wonderbug fame] was Sunstroke, and black actress Dee Timberlake [of The Young Sentinels/Space Sentinels fame] was Venus.

  • Johnny Brown was also a regular on "Good Times" in the 1970's.

It's surprising to see John Anthony Bailey of 1970's Krofft show Wonderbug fame do a voice in the Rickity Rocket cartoon,

  • Joe Ruby and Ken Spears also created Wonderbug so there is a connection there, Johnny Brown played building supervisor Nathan Bookman on Good Times and also guest starred on the 70s live kids shows The Ghost Busters, The Lost Saucer, and Monster Squad [coming to DVD soon].

  • Isn't that Sticks, the only black man in the "Happy Days" Universe? If it's the same guy, he did a lot of porn movies in the 1980s.

  • Though oddly enough it was shown on The Plastic Man Comedy-Adventure Show 1984 half-hour syndication package!!
