Bert Jansch. He wrote the instrumental accompaniment to 'Blackwaterside' (or 'Black Waterside' or 'Blackwater Side'), which Page riffed on to create this. Which is fair enough, since Jansch was riffing Anne Briggs version anyway, and the original song's an Irish ballad.
A new publication is being issued which contains literally thousands of YouTube comments. The music book is entitled 'You Are A Tube!' compiled by Steven Fried PLC.
FYI- The opening riff of 'Stairway' was cribbed nearly literally from the song 'Taurus' by the band 'Spirit' (one of the more under appreciated acts in rock history). Spirit toured with the early pre-Stairway Zep..so it's pretty clear what happened there.
But these acts of larceny don't take away from Page's genius..not just as a player and writer..but as a master of texutres and guitar tones
@jlowe1958 randy california himself took it from davey graham its a common riff thats been used many a time.. zeppelin made the riff famous and also added a beautiful ascending melody to the riff which is boring as hell in taurus.. just my opinion about it taurus and spririt
@BoomBoy13 Led Zeppelin has a catalogue of some of the best songs ever written, 90% written by the band. so what they redid a few songs (much better than the original) to get the band off the ground, Many rock bands do it. Youre a fucking moron.
@choclinda -Yes I met Bert Jansch early last year while he toured through my hometown of Portland Oregon. After a great solo concert he performed, I was determined to have him autograph the cover of my Pentangle Sweet Child Album c1968. I asked a lady cleaning up the stage equipment, if Bert would come out to autograph my album. I was honored to learn it was his wife, then humbled when I shook Bert’s hand and spoke to him for a couple minutes about his great musical influence on others.
Jimmy Page saying "At one point, I was absolutely obsessed with Bert Jansch. When I first heard that LP, I couldn't believe it. It was so far ahead of what everyone else was doing. No one in America could touch that."

@vaughanslayer75 It wasn't exactly stealing either. They simply took a part of another song that sucked anyway and turned it into gold. the beginning of stairway to heaven was composed by Tartarus (I think) and it wasn't memorable in the least, then zep came along and tweaked it and now it's the best song ever. That is simply how music evolves
Jesus! Led Zeppelin and Bert Jansch have their roots in blues and folk/trad music which pretty much relies on reworking of old traditional tunes. They never pretended not to. It's just modern day commodity obsessed people that think music can and should be "owned". Anyone who says Zeppelin had no talent is obviously either ignorant or doesn't know much about music.
@BoomBoy13 Your mistaken my friend you see could untalented hacks write such masterpieces like Achilles Last Stand, Ten Years Gone, Stairway to Heaven, the Battle of Evermore, Kashmir, When the Leevee Breaks and many more?
@jayob1231 Stairway to Heaven was ripped off from a previous band they toured with. When the Levee Breaks was ripped off from and old blues guitarist. This was ripped off from Bert Jansch. No real talent.
@BoomBoy13 If you're saying LZ ripped Stairway off of Taurus then you're crazy. Yes, five minutes into the song, 10 seconds sound remotely close to Stairway's intro. But that's it. If you say LZ stole When the Levee Breaks, what about Bob Dylan? He did a version of the same song, and no one's blaming him.
It's not "Bert's song" it's not Jimmy's, it doesn't belong to anybody. It's a traditional folk song and it's in the public domain for god's sake. Chill out and stop bitching about one of the greatest bands ever for pathetic petty reasons

Puts in Donkey Konga for the GameCube and switches over to guitar mode to play *Black Mountain Slide* with the notes on the screen and earns 299 coins.
All these comments are like the kid in the movie"Bad News and More Bad News"
To paraphrase the kid said " Jimmy Page weren't so good, he wrote Stairway to Heaven when he was 24. I learned how to play it when I was 17. He's not that great."
Sure he copied some stuff, you try to form a group like Led Zeppelin. Find the drummer first...oh, a singer like Plant too... and that bass player, Jones and then write Tea for One and produce it.....talkers.
@sillytele thats true, the kid needs to realize that writing one of the greatest songs ever isnt easy to do, whilst learning the song doesnt as much skill. and whilst im at it, im 14 years old and i know how to play it all on guitar! so beat that! BITCH!
@sillytele What does his age have to do with it? He probably could've wrote it when he was 16 if the inspiration hit hm at that moment, the point is he wrote it he didn't learn it from someone else.
@sillytele I've spent a long period of time trying to learn guitar, i found it is far easier to learn a song than come up with one that uses the same methods. I learned stairway to heaven when i was 14, still trying to write music as well as jimmy page.
Also im pretty sure those "copies" are pretty much covers that led zeppelin did a very exceptional job with. all the songs he turned into his own. if people want to hate on him for that they should also turn to eric clapton too
@sillytele Well, if I were given the go ahead to rip off any artist I saw fit and claim their work for my own I figure I could probably come up with some pretty cool songs and fool some idiot who knows NOTHING about the origins of the music he claims to respect into praising me. I just wrote this great tune called Dream On. You should hear it, totally rocks.
@StupidFuckingTrolls I know right. How dare they take a crappy song I turn it into a complete masterpiece the millions loved and still listen to. Those amazingly talented bastards.
@StupidFuckingTrolls they didnt steal the song, just made their own rendition you cock smooch. plus i dont see you making any music at all so go fuck yourself
@StupidFuckingTrolls that somone took a good piece of music and made it an amazing piece of music then got rich as shit and got numerous bitches while travelling the world on thier own plane and doing chach and smack while writing more amazing music u dum hoe
Roots of Led Zeppelin' , a CD w many various old Southern Blacks credited for their influence on Led Zeppelin. The English at least did give alot of recognition to their hero's in America's Southern States without which, they wouldn't have gotten any. Also, Led Zeppelin added their own creativity and did their own thing with what they absorbed.
Music is music you buffoons! Music is about freedom, not a C with a circle around it? Perhaps These musicians don't care because they could give a hoot about corporatism.
Perhaps, at some time L/Zepp have credited the song to Bert Jansch,we don.t know what goes on in the background do we. Anyway they are both great tracks, so just enjoy. Mind you some bloke has copied my garden, now that really is annoying.!! I then ask the question do I have a copyright on the flowers, or my garden layout?
its not really stolen to be honest, jimmy page admired bert janchs guitar playing and liked the song blckwaterside. even still its not a bert jansch song either its a traditional folk that he arranged a guitar piece for. jimmy page has just put his own twist it. its not as if he mugged bert jansch and ran away with the tabs. both versions are good its a hard guitar piece
@themachinist1000 who fucking cares, zeppelin is the fucking shit and thats it so relax and enjoy the music. i dont see how its "disgusting" that zepp can make a better cover than the original. and since when is becoming the greatest most influencial rock band of all time classify you as a scam artist? get your shit right and dont hate on zepp
People need to know who wrote these songs. It is disgusting that other people's songs are still being credited to Led Zeppelin, surely they have made enough money from being scam artists already.
@jonesj14 Very correct, Bert didn't write the folk song. Only problem here is the Irish folk song didn't feature a guitar part (the vast majority of folk songs of this sort of age don't have instrumental accompaniment at all). Bert wrote a guitar part to it, which Jimmy is playing note for note here as an instrumental he credited to himself. You do the maths! :)
@themachinist1000 My math tells me that the original song inspired Bert to improve the song with his guitar parts. That doesn't qualify Bert as the original writer. The Zeppelin studio version is almost exactly like berts but jimmy page played an electric guitar with a few ad ins. And the cords aren't exact but they sound almost the same. In concert Jimmy Page reworks the song entirely so there u have it.
@jonesj14 No it doesn't qualify Bert as the original writer, hence the reason he credited the song as a traditional on his 'Jack Orion' album. However the guitar part he wrote is not merely an improvement, it is a creation of his own. Go and listen to the folk song a cappella and you'll see what I'm talking about. The chords aren't exact because Jimmy had the wrong tuning. I don't understand how playing something on an electric guitar with tablas gives you the right to copyright it to yourself!
@themachinist1000 I agree that Jimmy page should not have copywrited it to himself. Jimmy has more than enough original stuff. As for the guitar part originally written by Bert. I am not sure that I believe that. I have read from several people that Bert copied it.
@themachinist1000 I agree that Jimmy page should not have copywrited it to himself. Jimmy has more than enough original stuff. As for the guitar part originally written by Bert. I am not sure that I believe that. I have read from several people that Bert copied it. Jimmy always uses a different tuning and that is why its different. They are not the same tablas either. besides Jimmys live version blows Bert away. Sorry RIP Bert no harm meant or disrespect. Just my opinion
@jonesj14 Yes Jimmy of course has lots of fantastic original stuff all through the decades. I'd encourage you to listen to more of Bert's stuff, especially leading up to this number, which was on his third album. You'll hear a strong indication of the kind of stuff he was coming up with and the reason he inspired a whole generation of guitarists (Jimmy Page, Nick Drake, Donovan to name a few).
@themachinist1000 Thanks, I will check some of his stuff out. Jimmy also had a number called White Summer / Black Mountain Side. The White Summer part is really great but I don't know if Jimmy copied that from Bert or not. Was Black Mountain side on the origninal zep record or just the box set?
@jonesj14 It's on the first Zep album (this version). What's annoying me is the fact that it is still credited everywhere as his tune - look on Wikipedia for example. A lot of people still don't know it's Bert's tune.
As an artist/songwriter, I just want to say how horrible it feels having a song that you wrote stolen. A "friend" of mine listened to some songs of my band. And wouldn't you know, a few months later he had copied an entire chord progression in one of his songs (one we were very proud of). The bitch denied everything and said he'd come up with it all by himself. We asked everyone to listen to the two versions, but no one cared. Like most people here.
pretty sure the last time i heard this song was when i was 10 in 98 my cousin was driving me to school and i heard this song on his tape deck haven't been able to figure out who it was until now
The only thing my father left me was a tattered copy of Led Zeppelin II - thank you father, you provided all you could and all I ever needed from you.
@WARBHOG We are all who we are, no more, no less. I am the sum total of my experience and you know what? I wouldn't change me for all the money, happiness or love in the world.
This song is Page's interpretation of "Black Waterside", which is a traditional Irish folk song...he got his inspiration from Bert Janch, who learned it from his friend Anne Briggs, who probably learned it from yet another folk singer...it's an oral tradition after all, and giving Led Zep a hard time for covering it their way is bulls&&t. Them not crediting the song as public domain is also bull...
this is too beautiful...who ever came up with it..who ever played it first second or last...who cares..great music is great music. just listen and go learn it.. :)
@Jessica52456 I agree, but when you make millions of dollars from someone else's music... without giving them a dime or even acknowledging the fact it's their song...
Put in /watch?v=jY-xpa9GWuo see if this is similar or not. Or type in Bert Jansch - Blackwater Side it wil be the 2nd vid you see in the youtube search.
This one has tabla and guitar and both instruments manage to keep their own identity throughout.. a song with prominent Indian percussion maintaining it's guitar'ish nature.. really good.. are there any other songs like this...??
@mynillywita9milli You do realize that Bert Jansch (one of my all time favorite guitarists) did not write blackwater slide, right? It's a traditional Irish folk song. lol
@Serai3 not as much as you, let me guess you know a lot about folk music but your really struggling with the banjo or the fiddle or some ironic instrument
i really want to hear the guy who inspired jimmy to play this, it sounds really nice. who was it?

BITCH!
ghesebull 3 months ago
@sillytele What does his age have to do with it? He probably could've wrote it when he was 16 if the inspiration hit hm at that moment, the point is he wrote it he didn't learn it from someone else.
BlotBlackInk 3 months ago
@sillytele Jimmy Page is one of the best guitarists we've ever seen.
These people are just silly.
ChristopherSEAY123 3 months ago
@sillytele I've spent a long period of time trying to learn guitar, i found it is far easier to learn a song than come up with one that uses the same methods. I learned stairway to heaven when i was 14, still trying to write music as well as jimmy page.
Also im pretty sure those "copies" are pretty much covers that led zeppelin did a very exceptional job with. all the songs he turned into his own. if people want to hate on him for that they should also turn to eric clapton too
hick109 3 months ago 2
@sillytele Well, if I were given the go ahead to rip off any artist I saw fit and claim their work for my own I figure I could probably come up with some pretty cool songs and fool some idiot who knows NOTHING about the origins of the music he claims to respect into praising me. I just wrote this great tune called Dream On. You should hear it, totally rocks.

Teddyb1939 6 months ago
its not really stolen to be honest, jimmy page admired bert janchs guitar playing and liked the song blckwaterside. even still its not a bert jansch song either its a traditional folk that he arranged a guitar piece for. jimmy page has just put his own twist it. its not as if he mugged bert jansch and ran away with the tabs. both versions are good its a hard guitar piece
leemadd92 6 months ago 4
@themachinist1000 who fucking cares, zeppelin is the fucking shit and thats it so relax and enjoy the music. i dont see how its "disgusting" that zepp can make a better cover than the original. and since when is becoming the greatest most influencial rock band of all time classify you as a scam artist? get your shit right and dont hate on zepp
cestonefp 6 months ago
People need to know who wrote these songs. It is disgusting that other people's songs are still being credited to Led Zeppelin, surely they have made enough money from being scam artists already.
THIS SONG: "BLACKWATERSIDE" - BERT JANSCH
themachinist1000 6 months ago
@themachinist1000
Have your facts straight. Bert Jansch didn't write the song either. He copied an old folk song.
jonesj14 3 months ago
@jonesj14 Very correct, Bert didn't write the folk song. Only problem here is the Irish folk song didn't feature a guitar part (the vast majority of folk songs of this sort of age don't have instrumental accompaniment at all). Bert wrote a guitar part to it, which Jimmy is playing note for note here as an instrumental he credited to himself. You do the maths! :)
themachinist1000 3 months ago
@themachinist1000 My math tells me that the original song inspired Bert to improve the song with his guitar parts. That doesn't qualify Bert as the original writer. The Zeppelin studio version is almost exactly like berts but jimmy page played an electric guitar with a few ad ins. And the cords aren't exact but they sound almost the same. In concert Jimmy Page reworks the song entirely so there u have it.
jonesj14 3 months ago
@jonesj14 No it doesn't qualify Bert as the original writer, hence the reason he credited the song as a traditional on his 'Jack Orion' album. However the guitar part he wrote is not merely an improvement, it is a creation of his own. Go and listen to the folk song a cappella and you'll see what I'm talking about. The chords aren't exact because Jimmy had the wrong tuning. I don't understand how playing something on an electric guitar with tablas gives you the right to copyright it to yourself!
themachinist1000 3 months ago
@themachinist1000 I agree that Jimmy page should not have copywrited it to himself. Jimmy has more than enough original stuff. As for the guitar part originally written by Bert. I am not sure that I believe that. I have read from several people that Bert copied it.
jonesj14 3 months ago
@themachinist1000 I agree that Jimmy page should not have copywrited it to himself. Jimmy has more than enough original stuff. As for the guitar part originally written by Bert. I am not sure that I believe that. I have read from several people that Bert copied it. Jimmy always uses a different tuning and that is why its different. They are not the same tablas either. besides Jimmys live version blows Bert away. Sorry RIP Bert no harm meant or disrespect. Just my opinion
jonesj14 3 months ago
@jonesj14 Yes Jimmy of course has lots of fantastic original stuff all through the decades. I'd encourage you to listen to more of Bert's stuff, especially leading up to this number, which was on his third album. You'll hear a strong indication of the kind of stuff he was coming up with and the reason he inspired a whole generation of guitarists (Jimmy Page, Nick Drake, Donovan to name a few).
themachinist1000 3 months ago
@themachinist1000 Thanks, I will check some of his stuff out. Jimmy also had a number called White Summer / Black Mountain Side. The White Summer part is really great but I don't know if Jimmy copied that from Bert or not. Was Black Mountain side on the origninal zep record or just the box set?
jonesj14 3 months ago
@jonesj14 It's on the first Zep album (this version). What's annoying me is the fact that it is still credited everywhere as his tune - look on Wikipedia for example. A lot of people still don't know it's Bert's tune.

thejimmypagejunior 6 months ago
As an artist/songwriter, I just want to say how horrible it feels having a song that you wrote stolen. A "friend" of mine listened to some songs of my band. And wouldn't you know, a few months later he had copied an entire chord progression in one of his songs (one we were very proud of). The bitch denied everything and said he'd come up with it all by himself. We asked everyone to listen to the two versions, but no one cared. Like most people here.

Also, if you like this version, you'll like Linda Thompson's take on it...very nice!!!
rockn0329 9 months ago
This song is Page's interpretation of "Black Waterside", which is a traditional Irish folk song...he got his inspiration from Bert Janch, who learned it from his friend Anne Briggs, who probably learned it from yet another folk singer...it's an oral tradition after all, and giving Led Zep a hard time for covering it their way is bulls&&t. Them not crediting the song as public domain is also bull...
rockn0329 9 months ago 19
@rockn0329 But to credit it to yourself when you didn't actually write it is stealing, no?
