True about Malmsteen playing Tender Surrender, not sure how that would sound. But to use this at the defintion of Malmsteen's style and top of playing ability is false. This song is Malmsteen at his most passive. It's more band orientated then like any of Malmsteen's solo stuff and alot of Vai's stuff as well. If you want to use Tender Surrender for Vai, Malmsteen would raise Arpeggios from Hell or Icarus Dream Suite in display of style, however saying that Vai > Malmsteen.

@Shady32 -Occassionally Graham Bonnett, will appear with Uli John Roth, as a guest. They usually jam on old stuff, from different bands. Look him up next time he plays in your town, it will be worth it ( usually play for 3 -4 hour gigs.)

I concur, this solo was not very well performed. Seems like Vai can't play Malmsteen and Malmsteen sure can't play Vai (I don't need to hear him try). And yes, Vai is very Van Halen like from early years. Free flowing experimental guitarplaying with lots of tapping and legatos and divebombs. Later he expanded more. I like Yngwies rhythm guitar as well, less "proper" in trained musical terms but more interesting than Vais rhythm playing here and in other places too.
