The uplifting sound of the coda completely belays the tragic bleakness of the lyric. The song's narrator winds up alone, desolate, hands shaking, and feeling that the only freedom he has comes in his dreams. He begins listening to the air conditioner. Somewhere in its drone he hears a melody which then turns into the hopeful refrain, "Look away down, Gower Avenue." He doesn't say what he's looking at if anything, he's just looking down it... Brilliant, absolutely brilliant.
I was listening to the air conditioner hum. It went mmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
I grew up listening to werewolves. Right before he died i got into all the rest of his stuff. Great stuff. sad i didnt get into in before. Even more sad hes gone. Rock on Zevon!
@bradystjames Ditto. Although, I didn't grow up listening to 'Werewolves'. I got into Zevon after his last two albums ('The Wind' and 'Genius'). 'Preludes' was an eye-opener, too. He's one of the 20th century's greats, no doubt about it.
An artist can't be measure by one song alone, but this proves that Warren Zevon was far above any other artist during his era. Everything about this song is beautiful.. simply breathtaking.
One of my favorite WZ songs. Of course I have a lot of favorite WZ songs. The man was special, a recording artist in the truest sense--he recorded beautiful art.
See you in the great beyond, Warren. Until then, I'm going to enjoy every sandwich.

I love this song. That isn't a really smooth or cool comment, but I cannot write
like the late and very great writer. Who wrote songs that so many great artists
played and sang. Thanks.
