Great guitar player. Alway`s liked how Barre was more a hard rock player than Howe, Hacket or Fripp. Was nice to have such heavy rock playing in Tull`s progressive music.
I saw Martin and Co. at least 14 times beginning with Warchild at HersheyPark Arena in PA and he is the greatest guitarist I have ever heard, live or studio. I've seen Steve Howe bunches of times, too, along with the original Skynnard, and so many guitar bands I lost count. He is the best, period. This guy can't be touched for innovativeness (though this recording is old). I also thank the dudes who uploaded this. By the way, Martin's two or three original albums/CDs, are better than Tull.
Loved live 70's Guitar solo's at full volume back in the day. Buck Dharma, Joe Perry, Alex Lifeson, and Ritchie Blackmore, come to mind and i saw them all !!!!
I was reading various posts; I think Martin's Les Paul is a 59 given to him by Jimmy Page? Please correct if I'm wrong. The rumor is Martin auditioned for the Tull job w/ Ian listening with his ear up to Martin's guitar. Anyway, whoever said Martin Barre is one of the most underrated guitarists surely speaks for many guitarists, I'm certain. Even Steve Vai has credited Barre as an early influence . . . Causing Barre to reply in an interview: "I don't see it."
@PeaceFrogMan Cornick was definitely the best bassist they ever had (although John Glascock was very good too). However, for me the drumming is a toss up between Bunker and Barlow. It was a mistake on Anderson's part to sack Cornick. Bunker left by his own accord because he got married.
Re: "I really dig Martin's guitar tone and I read he used hiwatt amps for aqualung, can anymore confirm?" I saw Tull at Cornell in spring '72, debuting Thick as a Brick. Martin used a LPaul --> Hornby-Skewes pedal --> Hiwatt stack. For Aqualung Martin used a LP Jr because he loved Leslie West's. ***Most critical for his tone was his "Hornby Skewes Treble Booster" *** (Google them, they sell repros and schematics) Also, many Brit guitarists used the Dallas Rangemaster treble boosters)

To think that ol' Martin (that is, a young Martin) was so nervous and insecure for the Tull assessment back in 1969. He's the longest standing player with JT after Ian, the patriarch. // My favorite drummers: Bunker & Barlow. // Favorite bassists: Cornick & Hammond. // Favorite at keyboards: Evan(s). ...Living in the past.
Ohhhh cut the bickering!! Both Barru and Clive and all drummers of Tull contributed their styles which allowed us to this day...enjoy the music of this fantastic band. I went to see Yes with their Quebec vocalist and thought he did awesome, as well as Oliver Wakeman on keys....c'mon guys ...slack it off
Unfair comparison between Bunker & Barlow. Barlow was perhaps more technically gifted - certainly more of a finesse type player. Bunker on the other hand had a more powerful sound (but no less gifted). Both were (or in the case of Bunker still are) brilliant! Sadly never got to see Barlow play live but I did see Bunker at the Tull Comvention in Worcester several years back and he was out of this world.
I think most of Barlow's stuff sounded better though. No matter how fast or clean you play, it has to fit in and complement the music. Some drummers lose sight of that, like Bunker. But Barlow played clean, fast, all of his stuff was very original (no one had heard a drummer like that before) and it fit the music perfectly. It doesn't take the spotlight over a guitar solo.
I have seen Tull 31 times between 1972 and 2007, have met Martin a number of times and this early clip is so primative compared to what he became with the "Aqualung" album that it is hard for me to believe that this is Mighty Martin.
Watching this with my Dad. Got to love it!!!!

Nice piece from a great player. From 0:04-0:20 sounds like he 'borrowed' the chords from Jan Ackerman of Focus!

Wow, thats some Rock and Roll indulgence there. I love JT and Martin Barrre, but it sounds more like he is tuning his guitar.
