It was Benson Curtis who set me straight with Turk Murphy back in the early 70's. That's when I was getting my feet wet with Trad. I was in my early 20's, hungry for something other than the junk they were playing on pop radio. I learned that Mr. Curtis was bringing his jazz program, "Strictly From Dixie" back to radio on our local jazz station here in L.A. It was there that I listened and learned a lot about the history of America's Original Art Form.
When I was about 5 my mom took me to hear a rehearsal of Turk Murphy's band when they were in New York City. In the 1950's. I had never heard live music before and I was completely blown away and have been a fan of American "Roots" music ever since.
I can best you by one year. I first heard Turk and his band over short wave radio. It was put out by AFRS from TOkyo. The year was 1952 and I was stationed in northern Japan. I've been a fan ever since.

This is awsome! Great music played by a wonderful band. I have been a fan of Turk Murphy since 1953. Thanks for posting. Bill
