  • 28HP is the RAC rating used for tax purposes and is calculate from the bore size. It bears no relation to the real output of the engine. The later '214' engine used in the TJ and TK that was developed from the 28HP delivered 100bhp @ 3500rpm (the engines max speed). The 214 has a slightly larger carb, so I'd guess this 28HP engine actually delivers around 90bhp, which isn't bad for a slow revving low compression 3.5 litre engine.

  • lubricaition is not ariving on valves?????? only back side of rocker?????

  • only 28 hp?

  • yes, HP, not BHP

  • still, thats not a lot from a 3.5 inline 6

  • Not by today's standards I agree. However, this is an engine design from the 1930's, and 28hp (not sure of the BHP of these but will be about 90) was quite respectable. Also, remember it's a commercial vehicle so designed for torque rather than BHP.

but, the overriding factor was Britains Horse Power tax in place at the time. This decided the cost of the Road Fund License based on the amount of HP, obviously forcing designers to keep the HP down.

  • There were no motorways back then, and commercials were limited to 30mph by law. All this meant a big old low revving plodder was ideal. These 28hp Bedford engines certainly had a great reputation, and saw us driving all over the world through the Second World War in a quarter of a million vehicles.

  • you sure know your stuff. i didnt know that it was a commercial engine. thanks for telling me that! its always good to know

  • Yes you are correct, straight 6 - 3 1/2 litre...

  • i belive thats a straght 6 am i correct?????
