  • where did you buy the guitar with the white lining on the bridge, and the inlay on the 12 th fret. i was that guitar but cant find it anywhere

  • @guitarjcm it is a martin john mayer sig

  • lame fucking ass

  • cheers .... followed your tutorial, practiced everyday , and i can now play this

    pretty damn goood...

    a BIG BIG thanks again

  • how do you get your thumb on 10th fret E (C) string, and your index finger on the 7th fret G string? grow bigger hands? =Z

  • I think the most important tip I could give someone who's trying to learn to play this song is to KEEP YOUR RIGHT HAND RELAXED. This is vital in trying to mimic the 'bouncing claw' technique that John so flawlessly uses while playing. But before you go all out, do what @sirkmi suggests and just fingerpick the pattern with your thumb and index to build some muscle memory. Soon enough, your right hand will be bouncing like crazy and you won't know what's happening, but it will sound AMAZING.

  • My hands are too small for this tutorial so i made a easy version of this song for people with small hands! including the chorus bridge and verse of the song! on my channel

  • Martin guitar om-28 jm one of 404 !!

  • thanks this is great

  • nice tutorial. next time dont make a tutorial if your gonna assume that we already know the chords and your not gonna teach them.

  • @gabriell16bishop nice comment. next time dont leave a comment if *youre* not gonna use the right *your*/*youre*.

  • @sirkmi true... Next time don't make a tutorial if you're going to assume that we already know the chords and you're not going to teach them. hows that?

  • @gabriell16bishop typing "john mayer neon tabs" into google would've taken the same amount of effort as making that smartass remark

  • @therichardchannel if thats your advice then your an absolute idiot. i prefer learning tabs played by real people who has feeling and emotion for the song not dots and numbers. it just so happened that this guy had a bright idea to make a tutorial assuming that people who seek help in playing this song already know the tabs. why bother make a tutorial. whats the point?? its like going to driving school and your instructor tells you "well i assume you know how to drive, lets go!!" idiot!!

  • @gabriell16bishop you're the absolute idiot if you can't follow along. this guy has made an excellent video and he's made it so you can clearly see where his hands are. if you have a tab, you can visually match it ot the video. knowing the chord shapes has nothing to do with feeling and emotion. this is an instructional video on the picking technique, if he is supposed to give you the chord shapes, you might as well ask him to change your diapers and wipe your ass as well.

  • Comment removed

  • @gabriell16bishop go learn them of a tab you noob this is a great tutorial

  • thanks, helped a bunch

  • sheesh, I didn't hear it right, troll's.

  • @TiffanyLabarre

    A string.. dummy

  • PUTZ ¬¬

  • the 8th string wtf??

    0:20

  • @TiffanyLabarre

he said the "A" string as in E>A<DGBE

  • or at least where did u get them?

  • can u plz show the chords ><

  • wow. great lesson man, i thought i had the pattern down before, but you really helped get the percussive sound i was missing.

when i grow up, i wanna be just like you.

  • Do you have a cousin named Rudy (from California)?

  • I really like your guitar, what brand/model is it?

  • @stevenq5 It's a Martin OMJM inspired by John Mayer. :)

  • You make it look easier than it really is.. I'll get it sooner or later!

  • Great guitar, I guess he was playing slap bass when writing this song xD

  • great guitar!

  • hey will you continue your tutorial, it helped me alot and i would be happy if you finish the soing

  • great tutorial bro!

  • great tutorial! helped me a lot. the right hand part is really the challenge in this song, and you explained it in full detail. thumbs up man! Now time to get some girls! :D

  • you're fucking beast...

  • thanks a lot man

  • dude thanks you. this help me learn this song within 2 weeks so i could play it for a talent show at my school. thanks for this video its the best one iveseen up here

  • Great tutorial .. I find it easier resting my hand on the bridge to be honest.. And i think (could be wrong) It's down to the most comfortable way you can fingerpick .. Again awesome video mate, i'm 95% there! haha

    Totally jealous of your martin.

  • @Amylouthomas the most comfortable way is not always the best way. Especially in guitar playin'. That is the reason why most guy play like this. The problem is that you don't get the same sound and possibilties. Every teacher of fingerstyle guitar can tell you that. It takes more practive but is than even more comfortable.

  • @LennyLeonard85 I think i spoke to soon.. I've been practising the way you teach and it's brighter and give more of the percussive sound.. My way sounds more mellow and muted.. Thanks again

  • @Amylouthomas Just to put it right. I'm not the guy in the video. ;)

  • @LennyLeonard85 Lets just pretend i knew that to save embarrassment ...

  • Thanks for posting!!

  • So quero saber as notas e ja sei tocar. FACIL.

  • This video definitely helped because I have the sense to figure it out on my own along with his help. Thanks for the vid bro.

  • When you slap the bass string slap it then rest it on the A string then quickly pluck with your first finger on the third string (second note) and then so on and so forth

  • When you slap the bass string slap it then rest it on the A string then quickly pluck with your first finger on the third string (second note) and then so on and so forth

  • dude, ur gay

  • @pacisablo he's teaching thousands of people an extremely difficult song, and you say he's gay instead of thanking him?? YOU ARE A FUCKING ASSHOLE

besides, look at your videos, they are SHIT, so SHUT THE FUCK UP

  • @chapplin1306

    Thank you

  • Wtf?? You're not being clear on what strings you need to pluck and with which fingers!!! -__-

  • @Naruke0 Alright I was mistaken. I just was paying close attention I guess.

  • @Naruke0 You're alternating between your thumb and pointer :) Except a times, where you play the same string twice with your pointer.. I think that's the only exceptions of the main part.

  • niiiiice

  • Finn is that you?

  • I have seen the most video tutorials on Neon. This was by far the greatest.

I've seen in the comment section here that it took a few days to get the technique to float to the rythm for some people. For me it took 2 weeks!

    Great tutorial!

  • I never played guitar, but i love John Mayer and i really want to play his songs. How long would it take to do this? Greets from Holland

  • @emieldegraaf if you're anywhere near average, long, long time lol. it's a tough technique, not to doubt you. rock it man.

  • whats your guitar's brand and type?

  • @4nderu thats a martin omjm signature.

  • i cant believe i am doing it right. after hours of practicing it has be come a sort of reflex. i dont even think abhout it :)))))))) now the singing while i am playing it.might take a year or sth.thanks mate

  • Greaaat one dude!!!! Best on YT. Thanks a lot!

  • awesome man. Excellent job

  • Comment removed

  • you can do the same thing if u find using the finger picking method easier instead of doing index thumb index thumb. just slap the string when it should fit ha

  • NICE FUCKEN GUITAR!!

  • that guitar sounds real good

  • what's the point of using two fingers when you could use four?

  • why would you assume that we know the shape of the chords if we are watching a tutorial about how to play it?..

  • @juansimonpiera Because the chord shapes you can get from tabs...

  • oh, or my guitar is too big or my hand is too small, i can't do the chords like a normal person

  • ya... fuck it! too hard. next song!

  • @andyschneider616

I'm a beginner and I've got it down in 1 day. Trust me man, it's not that hard. What's hard is to play it fast and make all the notes sound at the same time, like John does.

  • @regelemihai

i know, i got it down too i was just joking

  • @andyschneider616

    Ah, okay :)

I persoanlly still can't make the notes sound clear unless I slow it down significantly. It's annoying.

  • @regelemihai how long you been playing

  • @hamzie11

Guitar? For almost a year now.

  • @regelemihai

    I highly doubt that.

At least, I doubt that you have it down, as in you would feel confident playing it in front of people without having them question your guitar playing.

Sure, maybe you've memorized the chord progression, the individual strings to be plucked, etc., but I am fairly certain that you do NOT "have it down."

In my opinion, having it down WOULD mean to be able to "play it fast and make all the notes sound at the same time."

One day just seems like a gross exaggeration

  • @cowboycliche022

It may seem to be but it ain't.

If you define "getting it down" to mean an absolute mastery of the song, then no I don't have it down. What I meant was that I can play it fast without stumbling but that I can't make all the notes sound clearly as JM does in the song. Plus, my hand gets really tired; the chords are crazy.

  • @regelemihai

    I get what you're saying.

I think that very few people could "get this song down" as compared to how Mayer plays it.

Regardless, how do you play the chords?

Are your hands big enough to fret the low E string with your thumb?

I can only do that for the second and fourth chords.

All the other ones I've had to come up with my own creative fingerings for, which makes it tougher than it should be.

P.S. I've also been playing for under a year, though don't quite have the technique down.

  • @cowboycliche022

Well good to hear! Hope you improve with time. Playing guitar, although very rewarding, is no picnic at first.

As for the chords, yes I do use my thumb to fret the low E string and for the rest of the chords. My hands aren't that big--not even close to being as big as John's. I use my thumb for all of them except for the pre-chorus ("She comes and goes" part) where I have to use my ring finger for the root notes on the E string.

  • @regelemihai

I'm really frustrated because I have the sickest solo for this song (combining elements of John's hammer-on pull-off technique on the low E string from his WTLI DVD with my own improvisations) but I don't have the slap and pull technique down yet!

How long did it take you to get better at this?

And did you improve each time you played it?

Or was there a point where it just never got any better?

  • @cowboycliche022

haha, pretty much yes. I kept getting better and better, but now I just got stuck--it's so funny you've mentioned that. I play it at normal speed, but I just can't seem to advance. I have slip-ups here and there and cannot, for the world of me, make all the notes in these chords sound. The pre-Chorus is even worse because I can't keep my fingers steady--my arm cramps up.

It would be crazy to know that solo. I've seen people on YT attemting it and not one of them comes...

  • ...close to how John plays it in WTLI. But I guess the more you practice it the better you'd get. It's just that we sometimes get stuck and we tend to get bored after practicing the same riffs over and over. That's not good. Overcome that and just keep playing.

As far as technique goes, do what I do; play the progression SLOWLY repeatedly and then slowly pick up the pace. Once you've really got the technique down I guess the speed will come with it.

  • @regelemihai

I completely agree with your philosophy.

I guess some people are just better at certain things (i.e. me being able to play SOME of the solo without making ears droop, but not really having the actual song down yet), just like in life in general.

I'd say the biggest problem I'm having right now too is making all of the notes ring out equally. I always miss the third one (where the thumb crosses over the index finger), but somehow happen to hit it on the way back with the index...

  • @cowboycliche022

Lol, apparently we share more Neon- owes than we thought. That's one of my problems too! That and the redicuolous rhytm you have to keep with your right hand while picking all the right strings. The first and last chords are easy cause' all you have is 3 notes, but the others? Oh boy...

I guess all we can do is keep on practicing. Will do that tonight after the Turkey is consumed.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving if you're an American! :)

  • @regelemihai

Oh, trust me, the turkey will be consumed...along with the stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, gravy, etc. etc.

It's always nice to have exchanges like these on YouTube.

The best of luck to you on mastering this song and guitar playing in general.

  • @cowboycliche022

Thanks buddy! :) I wish you the best both in your future guiatr playing and in general. Have a wonderful holiday season!

And I agree it's a bretahe of fresh air having a pleasant conversation on YT for a change.

  • @cowboycliche022

Hey I was reading through the comments of this video and saw what you posted. I've been trying to learn this song for the last 4-5 days and am having the same problem hitting that G string. Have you been able to play it enough to get it to ring out right? how long would you say you practiced until you got it down? Thanks.

  • bitch flipped me off at 2:26

  • Comment removed

  • @samsta001 because if you have time to go to youtube to look this up, you would obviously have time to type in "neon tabs" in google. jesus.

  • @samsta001 If you don't even have 5 minutes to look for the chords, you wouldn't want to go head first into this song..

  • can you post the tabs?

  • man i cant understand the strings he plays on the pre chorus >< fck thats all thats left for me hoho

  • Comment removed

  • I love the guitar man. Im saving up for one myself. Ill be a few more years though haha

  • bro you rock at this song....i cant get it on my stupid ass electric guitar XD...really need an accoustic

  • Awesome tutorial

  • Very Good!

  • dude is that the john mayer martin nice it's sweet cuz it looks like the body is a little smaller than most much like eric clapton's

  • guy looks like cory monteith

  • I know I'm spamming this vid. but I really don't get how you keep your thumb straight all the time : S

  • Its actually easy...breathe everybody! ;)

  • Thank you so much, I´ve almost learned it but I can`t get the slapping right, could you try to explain it or do one more tutorial

    Thanks alot!

  • haha lol did he just put a sound effect on 4:19 ???? lol ^^

  • Comment removed

  • grrr... im almost there! ....not ^_^

  • You make this look easy..

  • this is the only tutorial about neon i understood

  • Comment removed

  • @AzinFiro It'll take a month at most. Just practice it 4 notes at at time (since it's pretty much all 16th notes) everyday, with good technique. I myself just learned the first measure.

  • That's a Martin OM-28JM right? John Mayer's Signature model. It sounds great. How did you manage to snatch up one of the 404 of those that were released?

  • excellent lesson.. really helped me tons... thanks

  • Hey I was wondering if you could break down the picking pattern for 6:25-6:40

  • Hell yeah! This is one of the most hardest songs to learn. It took me 15 minutes to get down the technique, but I still have a lot of work.

    Thank you.

  • fuck it

  • i want to cut my right arm off.

  • I JUST CANT FUCKING TAP

  • How did John come up with this method. By far the most difficult song he's written. Was he figuring this shit out while he was writing it? Not to mention he's tuned in drop C. How do you come up with so many obscurities in one song?

  • Comment removed

  • @Clockworkitis he was inspired by a jazz guitarist named Charlie Hunter who uses this same technique.

  • @Clockworkitis Obviously he was high

  • @Clockworkitis He didn't come up with it, it's a common method actually with bass guitar , he just incorporates it with lead guitar, along with finger plucking

  • @Clockworkitis I know exactly what you're saying! It's crazy...like how do you think of this stuff?

  • very hard song... personal challange

  • i wonder if i'm ever goingo to be able to play this song

  • extremely non-usefull!

  • i am still practicing "slapping" with my thumb...

The 'Thumb' must have a mind of its own...

  • @danielchootl

So true! you almost need two brains for this song

  • lol you said "g string"

    nah haha.......

but man your awesome bro .....

    big help

  • That's not the OMJM it's the OM-28-JM

  • This is the best tutorial I've seen for this song!! Thanks alot man!! Keep the videos coming!!!

  • but i can kinda get a rhythm going when i just use 2 fingers. is that why he only uses 2?

  • @desol89 Yeah I think it's cuz if he only uses two fingers, his hand sorta bounces back and forth, making it easier for him to get the percussive hand slaps.

  • thanks so much this video is a massive help. it took me a long time to figure out what you were playing but i realized once it all clicked that you are explaining it all with complete efficiency and simplicity once you re-watch it a couple of times.

my only question is this: from watching videos i can tell john does alternate between the thumb and index finger only because his fingers are constantly moving, but why would he do that? it seems more efficient to play with all fingers...

  • GREAT!!!!! Thanks man! I'll sub!:D

  • Can you explain and demonstrate on how the ring finger and thumb are and how they strum/pick? Im having trouble with it :(

I dont really understand the "doubled over" thing

  • Do not ask for chords or tabs on this song, if u do you simply do not have the listening ear and skill to play this song in the first place.

  • @bfitnessjoe you need to stfu.

  • Dude this is really good. AND you're so CUTE! can't help but notice it XD

  • very good boy...

  • nice bruce lee pic

  • useless w/o the chords.

  • oh man. are you using the martin omjm?

  • It definitely helped! Thanks for showing us how to play Neon. :)

  • Best tutorial I've found on youtube so far... though would've liked to have a little more depth into the passing notes and rhythm!

  • Awesome man....doesn't solve the problems that I have with playing it, but a great in depth view on the right hand.

I've got hugh respect for you to be abled to play Neon like that....really amazing.

  • he's only good cuz he's using john mayer's guitar

  • dude, you're a legend XD

  • Great lesson. Thanks for sharing.

  • i have been tryin to play this song foreverrrrrrrrrrrrr,,,,, i hate john

  • 5 minutos hablando al pedo te la pasas flaco,,... sos muy aburrido!, prefiero a John!

  • Your version and mayer's live acoustic is a bit exaggerated in level since you can do the percussion easier. I just mute the DGB strings instead of the slaps all the time. I think that's correct. It sounds better and plays easier though. Nice playing and tutorial anyhow.

  • ITS SOO HARD AND I DONT GET IT!!

  • damn man i got it now haha thanks a lot

  • @94LBaker

what guitar do you have a steel or an nylon string guitar? with nylon strings its hard...

  • @94LBaker its not! its just not flexible enough keep practicing! good luck

  • This is like the most accurate tutorial of Neon! Thanks! and it's easy to understand :D

  • your tutoriakl sucked sorry

  • nice job thanks so much! hey what kind of guitar is that?

  • That the CF Martin OMJM custom guitar Its the second custom guitar CF Martin guitar company made for John Mayer after 404 of his original custom (OM-28-JM) sold out. The OM JM is a more affordable version of his orignal custom and more have been made in the Martin company and are still being made

  • Comment removed

  • how you make the pre-chorus?

  • thanks a lot man. if you jus practice this a whole lot its not that hard after a while. well done
