I was a nav on tankers at Dyess AFB and I remember that when we'd hold short for the Bones to launch first, our 200,000-pound jet would shudder and vibrate when they pushed it up to afterburner. Night launches were great, the four blue flames made it look like something out of Star Wars as they climbed into the sky. Very cool.

The B-1 can carry more payload than a B-52; Has 1/100th the radar return; Is super-sonic; More agile (it's a giant fighter jet); Carries an impressive EW suite; Drops precision munitions; Maintainer friendly especially compared to the B-52 (I know, I worked on both)....I would say if either of these two were ready for retirement, it's the B-52. Great service record, but long in the tooth.

My uncle was with Rockwell for 20 years on the line. He helped build the tail section on the jet you see flying here. He is now retired from Boeing. Speaking with him over the years I can tell you this: The only draw back to the B1 is COST. It is a very expensive craft to maintain & operate. It is one of, if not THE most complex jets flying to date & that includes the F-117 & the B2. This comming from a man that spent his life building aircraft with Rockwell & Boeing.

Let me sum it up, the B-1 , F-35, and F-22 can all cary prescision munitions, but the B-1 is neither vtol or stealth capabilities.
The B-1, B-52 and B-2 all have higher load capacities that the F-35 and F-22, but the B-1 lacks the stealth capabilities of the B-2, and the extreme load capacities of the B-52.
So the B-1 is obsolete.

I do know that the engines and airframe were very capable of sustained supersonic cruise at high altitude.

I have heard that B-1's will make runs through the valleys in Afghanistan at Mach 1+ at 50 or so feet off the ground, the effect is supposed to be like what happens in the movie "Pushing Tin" (basically it sucks you up in the air and slams you down) plus your ear drums are blown out. I have never had actual confirmation that they are allowed to do that in a multi-million dollar jet, so I ask the soldiers/ pilots out there to respond and shed some light on the subject.

@Leviathandk Number One mythbusters did it with a an f-16, the lowest they got was between 200 & 500feet. I am not saying you are wrong just that it is possible to hit someone with the plane's wake. It is true, it would be ridiculously reckless to fly through a valley like that but the effect would be devastating. I have done a bit more research and the only thing I can find is that this MIGHT have been done to protect some spec. op. troops after the b-1 ran out of bombs. A one time thing.

The B-1 is awesome. I remember hearing someone say that during the cold war the Russians feared it more then the B-52 because the B-1 has a high speed, low altitude bombing capability. Which means it can fly under the radar and Triple A couldnt touch it.

The B-1 can carry more payload than a B-52; Has 1/100th the radar return; Is super-sonic; More agile (it's a giant fighter jet); Carries an impressive EW suite; Drops precision munitions; Maintainer friendly especially compared to the B-52 (I know, I worked on both)....I would say if either of these two were ready for retirement, it's the B-52. Great service record, but long in the tooth.

My uncle was with Rockwell for 20 years on the line. He helped build the tail section on the jet you see flying here. He is now retired from Boeing. Speaking with him over the years I can tell you this: The only draw back to the B1 is COST. It is a very expensive craft to maintain & operate. It is one of, if not THE most complex jets flying to date & that includes the F-117 & the B2. This comming from a man that spent his life building aircraft with Rockwell & Boeing.

For all those that say the B-1 is outdated, let get the facts straight. The Bone is the highly requested bomber in the FOL right now and has beenfor the last few years. Their the ones flying around the clock over there. Not B-2s. As far as stealth, who really cares. We're not even fighting any enemies over in the sandbox where it matters. There are plenty of countermeasures on the Bone if ther is trouble. And last, the B-2 can't haul ass to the troops when they need the close air support. Done..

For the B-1s nuclear aspect: ever heard of an ICBM? Its capable of delivering a larger payload, easier to make, automated, harder to shoot down, and easier to store/hide.
For the b-1s conventional aspect: there are plenty of newer, faster stealth aircraft for that, + B-52's.
Therefore, the B-1 is outdated (see B-2).

Let me sum it up, the B-1 , F-35, and F-22 can all cary prescision munitions, but the B-1 is neither vtol or stealth capabilities.
The B-1, B-52 and B-2 all have higher load capacities that the F-35 and F-22, but the B-1 lacks the stealth capabilities of the B-2, and the extreme load capacities of the B-52.
So the B-1 is obsolete.

The B-1 is very close to the B-52 in numbers of JDAM bombs carried, intercontinental range* and plus is supersonic*.
You are going to count on subsonic 50 year old aircraft and a total of 20 B-2's to carry out the mission?
Parking the B-1 will effectively cut our bomber force by aprox. 40%.

There isn't always a nearby friendly country that will allow us to use their airfield.
The B-52's are really "Bomb-TRUCKS" now, not bombers that have any chance in a hostile air environment. The B-52's design is over 50 years old and indeed has a long service life, but we are not talking about commercial DC-9's here.
The B-1 is supersonic when it needs to be, .....over-target.

I built both the B-1 (#2 through #86) and the early B2 (DEVELOPEMENT THROUGH #3) I dont remember variable inlets? do you mean the engine intakes? They were fixed on both the B-1A and B-1B Models. I do know that the engines and airframe were very capable of sustained supersonic cruise at high altitude.

JDAMS have also given the B-52s the ability to perform precision attacks.
But this was performed after air supremacy was achieved and most SAM sites destroyed.
The B-1 btw can carry more JDAMS and other surgical strike than a B-52.
I'm thinking more about getting our pilots home alive after a mission rather than service life.

@monkeyman1140 The B-1 is a high performance aircraft so of course the stresses on the air frame will shorten its life. Its a Ferrari that can nuke. But even a span to 2027 is cost effective. It works and thats all that matters.

The war in Afghanistan and Iraq are draining the military much like what the Vietnam Conflict did to the military.
With the present economy,trade deficit and the government in debt up to it's eyeballs there is little money for anything.
