  • This is one very "daffy" video. =p

  • That's what the F.A. Cup is all abt,the best competition in the world of football in my book.

  • This video went viral on Niamey

  • Look at the state of that pitch! Typical 70s goalmouth mud bath

  • One of the greatest moments of all time in FA cup history

  • I'm a Herefordian but I think Colchester beating Leeds was a bigger shock. That Hereford side was a bloody good outfit of semi-professionals and had already drawn 2-2 at St James'. Fourth Division Colchester beat Revie's legendary Leeds side, arguably the greatest club side this country has ever seen.

  • still a great memory, im sure i was sat on a bale at the side of the pitch , under whats now the len weston stand!

  • gotta love those 70s hairstyles haha.

  • As a Newcastle & Hereford fan.. I dont know what to say;P

  • This goal (and the highlights of the game) make me want to cry tears of joy.

  • Sheffield We will have to watch it next round.

  • the best goal ive ever seen,it brings tears to my eyes every time i see it,non league v 1st div muddy pitch, wot a strike, the commentry from john motson was first class, and it was his first broadcast, unbelievable.you cant beat the old days for the romance and passion of the FA CUP

  • and don't forget, the mighty HENDON of the Isthmian league drew 1-1 with Newcastle at St James Park in the FA Cup 3rd Round just two years later.

  • What great memories when the F A Cup was the world's greatest cup competition.

Where are the legends Ronnie Radford and Ricky George today and what did they get up to after their glorious playing days?

Thanks for the memories Boney, much appreciated.

    Aled

    a nostalgic Hereford supporter

  • when football was football

  • this is from the days before the moneymen and hyped up glorified prostitute players ruined the great game...

    pure magic...

  • i from mexico but i love hereford united is my favorite team , this video is greate the people are very very happy wooow what history this match, i play whith this team in fifa 10 and sorry i dont english im mexican and i talk spanish !hereford united!!!!!!!!

  • @19Diego1 Wow football really is a universal language!

  • notice how most of the crowd are essentially young kids :) what an experience for them!

  • Love how the Bobbies are trying to restore order -- with the biggest grins on their faces.

  • Hey! those were the days!

    .

No violence, pure dedication and no coppers whacking innocent supporters with their batons, the thrill of the giant killing and the magic of the FA Cup.

    .

Now that was pure unadulterated football!

  • @BertHigginbottom that XXX football .. only shoudl viewed aftre 11:10pm ;)

  • That first goal is amazing.

  • what about the marking at the winning goal????

  • That Ronnie Radford goal is fucking superb!

  • Thanks very much for posting!! At the time I did not appreciate the result but 38 years later I certainly do appreciate your kindness in posting it. And the result too if the truth be known. We British always support the underdog!!

  • my uncle ronnie r8 finish

  • bunch of fools

  • f***ing brilliant!

  • "DAGLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEISH!"

  • Heavy ball, poor quality boots, terrible playing service.

But sometimes, hope is all that matters.

  • This is an enchanting clip from a time when football was more human. I'm a Colchester fan and travelled to Hereford for this season's cup game just to see the place where this happened, and I wasn't disappointed. I don't care what the modernists say, Edgar Street is a special stadium and it will be a shame when Hereford move on.

  • So much agree with you. There were times, then football was football.

    And, a FA cup result a year previously, 5th round: Colchester 3 - Leeds 2 :-)

  • @Farerets I had completely forgotten about the Colchester result!!! But this is more of a shock? Do you think?

  • @alanheath I think Hereford-Newcastle was a bit more of a shock, given that Hereford was an amateur non-League club, while Colchester were in D4 and even had a player of Raw Crawford calibre in the side - remember, he won the D1 championship with Ipswich in 1962 as the topscorer of the League and even played for England... On the other hand, Leeds definitely were stronger than Newcastle in the early seventies, so what was the bigger shock could probably be discussed...

  • @Farerets I agree with your analysis. Leeds was a far better team than Newcastle at the time but Hereford was far behind Colchester.

I had forgotten about the Colchester match but now I remember laughing about it at school. (Can't remember laughing about the Hereford result though!!!)

  • Fuck the theatre of dreams, we have the cowshed of memories

  • @eJasminde hereford will neve rmove on, we're better than everyone XD

  • Greatest goal in FA Cup history, along with Giggs in 99'.

    Best commentary ever also.

  • I never get tired of watching this amazing game. It's great to see all the young fans in their parker coats stream onto the pitch, to heap further humiliation on Newcastle's keeper Ian Mcfaul. I loved that coat.

When did Dixie Mcneil come on the scene for Hereford? scored agreat goal at Newcastle in 1978 for Wrexham in the cup.

I'd love to get hold of that clip. How do you get these great video clips ? What is the cost and are there any legal or licensing issues that I need to be aware?

  • I was one of those Parker clad youths!!

Dixie McNeil played for Hereford from 1974 to 1977 and again in 1982-83; either side of his spell at Wrexham in fact.

This clip was 'ripped' from a DVD called 'Football's Greatest Ever Matches' (from M & S of all places); this match is in the bonus material.

  • I have since found longer highlights on a BBC Triple DVD set 'Match Of The Day The Best Of The 60s, 70s and 80s' which I really must get round to posting. This one includes a lot more of the game including the Newcastle goal.

I also have even longer highlights on my Sky+ from an ESPN Classic show called FA Cup Upsets but I don't have the right gear to rip that to the PC.

  • There's no secret to getting hold of clips; just recording a broadcast, if you spot that it's on, or from a DVD. I don't know anything about licencing so my clip might get deleted for saying that but I don't think anybody would be really bothered about these? There are other videos which are copyright and do get deleted of course....

  • @Boney1960 also ripped from 101 Great Goals VHS video I have. It takes forever for that ball to go in, awesome strike.

  • Now of course all those kids would get life bans.

    The times we live in.

  • Yeah fucking stupid isn't it. On saying that though, i've invaded the pich bfore now like when Hereford got into the playoff final and the stewards never seem that bothered. If it's at the end of the game then they don't give a fuck, and there are only ever about 5 policemen there.

  • Great memories when the F A Cup was the World's most exciting competition.

Who would have thought that in that same season, shortly after this match, Hereford lost to Aberystwyth Town in the Welsh Cup and I believe that David Williams, nicknamed Dias scored the winning goal! By the way who defeated Hereford in the F A Cup that year?

    Thanks for the memory.

  • Hereford played West Ham, including the legendary Bobby Moore & Geoff Hurst (can't recall if Martin Peters was still there then) in the next round. The first leg was a 0:0 draw at 'Edgar Street' then the Hammers won the replay 3:1 at Upton Park. Good times!!

  • The 3:1 scoreline at Upton Park included a Geoff Hurst Hat-Trick....

  • @haulfan In the next round we drew with West Ham at home and went down 3-1 in the replay at Upton Park, which was a midweek game but played in the afternoon because of the miners' strike.

  • @haulfan In the next round we drew with West Ham at home and went down 3-1 in the replay at Upton Park, which was a midweek game but played in the afternoon because of the miners' strike.

  • amazing

  • I love this football....

  • why was this not goal of the season 72?

  • cim je fudbal postao posao sve je otislo u kurrac!

  • Great goal and it was the match that made John Motson famous as a commentator.

  • and there"s radford, he"s been on the scrumpy, he"s having a shot, its a bobby dazzler and the farmers knock out the toon!

  • The stadium looks like crap then compare to today

  • I live away now so haven't been back to Edgar Street for a few years but I can't believe the ground is that different even now.

  • Hahaha! It looks better there than it does now mate to be honest!

  • LOL

  • BEST GAME EVR!

  • im a coventry fan but thats the greatest fa cup goal ever

wot i would give to see another moment where the non league side beat a premiership side

it remains to be one of the greatest moments in the history of football

  • Radford put everything into that shot

  • what fantastic goal com on hereford :)

  • That´s some crazy shit

  • PLease someone tell me the commentator name? plz

  • john motson if im not wrong..

  • your not =]

  • the greatest fa cup goal ever.

  • I wasnt alive when this happened but it gives me goosebumps watching. its just the greatest long range goal ever. I dont know why, it just has a certain magic to it. The 1-2, the terrible pitch, the flying goalie, the wonderful commentary, the crowd and Radford's celebration of wow i just scored a screamer. Only thing to top it in 1970's FA Cup history is Montgomery's save for Sunderland in final v Leeds.

  • By coincidence, multipleman78, i've just come from looking at the Montgomery double save. Yeah, 2 fantastic moments, and what a goal by Radford indeed. Wasn't that when Motson was just starting out on match of the Day?

  • It was one of his early jobs i believe. On the video he mentions that the shock of the result propelled him to lead game for first time ever and he just happened to do some legendary commentary at the right moment.

  • @multipleman78 lol!!! the flying goalie!! this is the closest thing to a Roy of the Rovers moment since football became soccer!!

  • My second favorite all time goal.

first: Justin Fashanu v. Liverpool 1980

  • this is what make football so good ;)

  • Great video and memories. I was there. What a goal what a tackle by Ron before the goal that followed. Amazing and then hero tricky Ricky George and Dudley Tyler so good and the whole team put out and created a piece of grand Hereford History. I live in CA now but of course have lots of pals in hereford still. Great times.

  • The Greatest day in our history.

  • brilliant goal by Radford, and I say that as a Newcastle supporter. One of my first memories of watching MOTD was seeing this, I think my dad must have let me stay up to watch it - the &8%£*!"!

  • wat a fuckin goal

  • What a strike this is. On that pitch it was incredible. Best ever goal

  • Im pretty sure that ball that Radford hits is still going.

  • Ha ha ha, parkafest.

  • The goal, the call, the fans, the mud, Ronnie Radford. UNMATCHED!

  • This is what happens if you play on a cow pasture.

  • Ronnie's goal was just brilliant.

  • good goal

  • did anyone EVER hit a single shot quite that well, or quite that HARD, ever again.?..and in the mud and cold and gloom...this moment should be included in the time next time capsule we send out on a deep space probe..just unforgettable.

  • Hey!, spotted some kid without a parka.

    Hope they chucked him out!

  • Easliy the best FA cup goal of all time, bolloks to Giggs! The only one contending with this was Nat Lofthouse's against United in the final Lmao propper goal!

  • Tremendous goal!!!

    FA Cup Forever!!

  • Just removed an 'inappropriate' comment; there's no need for that!! For your information, we've all moved on but it doesn't mean you can't look back on good times gone by. What the hell is You Tube all about for goodness sake?

  • what a day for sunderland fans

  • up the Bulls, Radford, what a hero

  • The Parka capital of the world

  • the crowd wore one colour!

  • I was there!!

    Fan bloody tastic.

  • Not even King Kev himself could have stopped the Parka clad mighty whites...........

  • now tudor's gone down for newcastle...ball should clearly have been put out of play...game will have to be replayed.

  • That's why the football is beautiful

    I love it!!!

  • this is football.

  • HEREFORD UNITED!!!!!!!greatest team in the world

  • thats what football be today

just run onto the pitch and celebrate

  • newcastle still muddling along.nothing changes.

  • Me to I fell over the plackard, and broke my Nose, but it did not stop me from watching the game,And yes I had a Parka on lol!

  • Made me smile :)

  • I was there, and yes wearing a Parka

  • I've a great name for a band..." Ronnie Radford and the Parka Invaders" A bit long I know, but you got a band? Have the name on me.

  • lol ha ha embarrasing are what

  • love the parkas did anyone ever get a lit tab end dropped in their hood or was that just a leeds thing?

  • What a goal, what an achievement by a non-league team to beat the mighty Newcastle in the F.A.Cup, the oldest and greatest competition in the world.

I was at this game and spotted myself on the pitch it was an amazing game and this wonderful video clip brings it all back. Thanks
