  • The album I got has the full title of this as 'Tired Angels (for J.M.H)'

so I presume that's for James Marshall Hendrix then?

    Great song anyways

  • Great album, i had it when it was new.

  • In the late 60's I listened to this album over and over!! My grown children remember me doing that!! I'm now a great grandmother and still love Mountain.

  • This album is sooo vastly underrated. It's simply one of the best rock albums ever made.

  • Direct refference to Tolkiens Lord of the Rings, in Led Zepplin's "the battle of evermore". It also is as far as i know the only Led Zepplin song to have a woman singing in it, her name was Sandy Denny. words were..."the drums will shake the castle wall, the ringwraiths ride in black (ride on)

  • IT FIGURES -DREAMS OF MILK & HONEY IS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND!

  • You can feel the Cream influence from Felix

  • @stampedehero22 ...and a big part of Cream's sound was the direction/influence of Felix.

  • Shiva, you don't get it. My point is not about nostalgia; more that often an earlier technology surpasses any later tech. in quality, aesthetic appeal, practicality, and social workability. Listening to a stereo system is [can be] a shared, group enjoyment. So can listening to an iPod through speakers- only a colder, more sterile robotic experience. Just like 16 and 35mm films, Hammond B3s, b&w photos and this music; sometimes older [before] is better. Ex. : the SR-76. Peas

  • Would have to agree, analog and vinyl rules. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to hear how much better 'the whole sound' sounds [analog], as opposed to how flat and cheap any digital 'sample' of the music sounds. True music lovers agree : Analog [record albums] Rules. Get yourselves a turntable and a decent pair of speakers sit back and listen and know that digital sound is a cheap techno. diversion. Rock On

  • @arhatyellow No reason to be elitist. Both serve their purpose very well in that analog provides the nostalgia, warmth and coloration. Almost like a glass surface sits on top of the music as a window to see how beautiful it can sound. Reminds you of childhood. Digital music offers flexibility, cleanliness and ultimately convenience. When you're working out, driving, having large parties where you need variety on the fly...thats what the iPod is for. Its a fantastic invention. Listen to both!

  • This song was dedicated to James Marshall Hendrix aka Jimmy Hendrix.

  • Ain't no trick rig. West is a master at dialing in the tone on a head and guitar.

Most think you slam everything to ten and wail away.

Take a few moments and get the tone. Good speakers are a must.

Make a cheap amp sound good and a jcm800 great.

  • tHE TRACK THAT HAS EVERYTHING!.riffs licks vocals the drumming aint bad either! a great song and lyrics....work of art.

  • Leslie used an old les paul junior with a electro-harmonix "screaming bird" between guitar and amp.

  • RIP and thanks Mitchell...

  • This and 'Travellin' in the Dark' have to be the most under-rated pieces of music in the last 40 years. OK by me ...I'd hate to hear this stuff on a microsoft commercial anyway.

  • I love it.

  • One of the best songs by one of the best bands of the era. Thanks for posting.

  • I LIKE THIS BECAUSE I DONT HAVE TO DRAG MY OLD VINYL RECORDS OUT~!

  • @featnavel I think you should drag them out, nothing beats the analog sound of vinyl records. The analog sound is alive instead of digitally flat and dead.

  • RIP Felix

  • Perfect harmony-fantastic innovation. It`s been 40 years-and no band has come close to matching the magical music of Mountain.

  • @1994g0 thats not true man, there were many bands back in the 60s that at the same time as Mountain-which are awsome-that were as creative or even more... true that the magics been lost nowadays though...

  • So long ago, there was so good band! Is it true, that they are regarded as pioneers of Heavy Metall?

  • you just can't compare Mountain with others esp with Leslie kicking the asses..

  • Anybody know who did the vocals on this track? It is one of the best rock songs of all time, imho.

  • @spudtu

Felix Pappalardi = vocals/bass, Leslie West = guitar, Steve Knight = keys, Corky Laing = drums

  • @bandity2k

Cool! Thanks for that, bandity. I used to have the vinyl with this song on it, but of course that was....back then. This song is like a rock and roll lullabye and the tones of both guitar and vocals so perfect for it.

  • The tone is just not re-produceable. I think after 40 years, its clear that Leslie West's tone CAN NOT be duplicated, only emulated.

  • I agree. I also loved the cut: My Lady

  • Guitar of mountain sounds different of all band of he time

  • @gustavomde

    what???

  • I said : the guitars is different of 60's bands

  • I said : the guitars is different of end 60's bands, and 70's...

  • god i havent heard this song in mofo years. still one of my favorite rock bands of all time. thanks a ton for posting this.

  • Fabulous but so underrated song by Mountain. This band is so underrated and never got their true due.

  • I disagree. I've always been crazy about them. One of my favorites. People that don't appreciate them don't know good music. It's that simple.

  • ++++++++++++++++++

  • Thanks, Mrmike. I didn't know about the Hendrix reference and this has been one of my favorite songs since I was ten! This song was dedicated to Hendrix!

  • There's a smokin' funky psychadelic blues lead at :39 that White Stripes couldn't quite reach.

I wish they could've, but they just couldnt've.

  • thanks, for all these great, great mountain songs.one of my first (8 tracks lol).hey, iwould like to hear *flowers of evil*-thanks again

  • R U TALKIN ABOUT DREAM SEQUENCE!

  • Always reminded me of Cream, but these guys were so much more soulful!

  • awesome song

  • I also played (still have) a '58 LP Jr. Single cut. I was always trying to figure out how West got this inimitable sound.

Never DID figure it out, but came close by miking a cheesy little Pignose through a couple of Fender Super Twins

  • One of masterpiece of all time,XD!

  • the full title of this song is "tired angels (to jmh).. the jmh being jimi hendrix who had died recently (sept. 1970) since this album came out in 1971. west and mountain had jammed with hendrix...

  • The way he got that sound was to turn the tone control all the way down on his guitar, which was played wide open through a sunn pa system head,This only works with a 1950's les paul jr. I know cause i played one once.

  • Thank you for spreading Mountain's fantastic music here!! This song has been one of my favourites since I heard it 1.time in early -70. Lone Felix's voice.

  • Oh,spelling got out of hand...should have been Love

  • From 3:35 on the melody becomes hypotnic....it seems to take you onto a magic sea..Like Odysseus, you can`t leave the swaying moving unfathomable sea...

Everywhere on Nantucket Sleighride, Pappalardi`s fascination with classical culture(He once said Bach was "God") is manifest.

  • Thanks, just love that sound reminds me a bit eric guitar on disraeli gears

  • i love how the solo guitar sounds anyone know how is named this effect???

  • it's an overdriven sunn amplifier, I think

  • @balchoth It was a crap load sun colleseum pa heads..master and gain, thats it

  • @TheDman216 ....sorry, thats it?....no you have to add the great talent of Leslies to the tone!!

  • @CreeMetis I agree 110%

  • People have been trying for 40+ years to get Leslie's pioneering sound. But the only tip Leslie has ever given, he just gave this past month. He says he plugged right into the a Sunn PA!!

Listen to the master himself tell ya:

    Type this into youtube search.

"Leslie West - Fillmore Amps & Woodstock (5 of 8)"

  • @AdlejandroP Thats a Leslie :-) as in the Man

  • @AdlejandroP The 'EFFECT' is called a vintage P-90 pickup with the TONE CONTROL turned waaay down to ZERO....giving you the famed 'Woman Tone' that Clapton's famous for!

  • Superb tone poem.Beautiful lyrics, harmony and music.Ranksright up there with nantucket Sleighride and Theme For Am Imaginary western.Pappalardi and Laing at their best.

  • this song refers to Tolkein's Lord of the rings...:the wrinkled lines on the king of gondor's face ...of course the king of Gondor was aragorn...Led Zepplin also made a few references to Lord of the rings Misty mountain hop...Ramble on (gollom)..what an incredibly influential book

  • Oh, thank you, I didn't know that.

  • true-and it was especially influential in the 60`s.the hippie on the street knew all about Tolkien."Tired Angels", though, has a certain musical style that probably surpasses the Zeppelin songs you mention. But I cetainly concede "Ramble On" is far better known and is played much more often by the general music public.

  • @anyl8ter

And Tolkien in turn was influenced heavily by Wagner's Rings Cycle. And so it goes back to the dawn of time.

  • @anyl8ter Thought misty mountain hop was more about LSD, definitely ramble on was Tolkein inspired
