@theflak36 to key out black most people say to use a luma key however I find that it makes it look weird and the edges aren't keyed how I would like so I use the linear key and you will see you shell in 2 small windows in the effects panel with 3 droppers down the center select the top dropper and click on the black on the left shell and it should key out your black very nicely. Hope it works :)

Im trying to import shells in After effects for a short war movie I filmed with my reenactment group,but the shells are always imported with a black backround and if I turn the opacity to ''screen'' then I can barely see the shell.Is there a way to solve this problem?I can still import the shells in premier pro without a problem but they dont look very good.

@SFLskates try video copilots designer sound Fx but to be fair doesnt have much good sounds for this, so i suggest a game sounds replacement website like GameBanana(dot)com free fps shooter sound packs, also you can download sony pictures sounds pack :)

This is a great tutorial, but I have one little bit of advice:

Depending on who you're fighting in the movie, the tracers are different colors. It's not just a streak of white light anymore, that's hollywood bunk. NATO forces, (such as America and the UK) use red colored tracers, and most other factions (unconventional factions, Russia, etc) use green tracers. Other than that, it's a great post! Thanks for the help!

@SuperJoMario64 lolz dude you cant do it on movie maker... Thats the point. Its after effects not movie maker. As in 700 dollar program compared to free program. Now then there are ways to get after effects free ;) and tracer fire is basically just stuff that comes from the back of bullets as they are being fired. Like I said though you can only do this in after effects and MAYBE in vegas pro 10. Good luck.

Tip: tracers are loaded every 5 to 10 rounds, so shoot off 4 to 9 before you have your effect

@NeonGlobeProductions CS4, soon to be CS5, but this effect can be done all the way back to 6.5 i'm sure. Maybe even sooner. As long as you can make a solid and make it 3D and add the blur your good.
