Kyoshi Pat Haley was promoted to 8th dan. That's why he has the checkered belt. Hanshi Perry is kudan.

I don't agree :
It's not Kudan but Kyuu-dan (or Kyū-dan). Then, Kyū-dan is the last dan of Hanshi range. If you get it, you get a red belt.
Hachi-dan is the last white-red belt =)
