Thanks much, I saw the video at aquahobby , followed it here and put it in my favorites. Back when I had a 55 gallon tank oh these many years ago I brought home a small homely looking fish from the Pet Store I was working at and he was a boon companion for many years, never did know what he was and then I chanced upon your video and lo and behold! There's Beady Eyes. (that's what we called him), very personable fish. Not quite look like the pictures which may be why I never ID'd him til now
The bubbles coming out of the tree trunk in the back left look really cool. Is there really a piece of wood there or did you cut a hole in the background? I've been looking through all your vids and they're all awesome, btw.
@nimahs2000 Its a "back to nature" background, I cut out a hole in that part of it for the filter outlet (external fluval 205) and plumbed an airstone in to the outlet as well.
They're quite large compared to most egg layer babies when they hatch, so when they were still wriggling around together they were on liquifry... and then they went on to a variety of powdered foods.
there look exacly the same tho apart from the colouring.they have a black line don the side but the female is a rusty colour and the male is a silvery rusty colour they have red eyes with black centres and have like faded black lines down the side ov em. they said rainbows in the shop lol
i have just bought some rainbow cichlids and they dnt look like any of the rainbows on youtube one is a rusty colour and the other one is like a silver they both have red eyes can u help?
Well I'd suggest that you don't have rainbows! Mine are a yellowy orange colour with strong black patterning down their sides, when they are breeding their whole body turns a very dark yellow with extreme black patterning...
Their eyes are far from being red as well, they are yellow with black centres...

They're awesome! It's amazing how cichlids actually protect their fry unlike some other types of fish who could care less and even try to eat them.

What plans do you have for those littlets? Are you going to sell them?

They're all over a year old now and happily living in a very large community tank....

what do the babies look like? are they grey with black tiger stripes and a black spot on the dorsal fin?
CrayfishCollector 2 years ago
They are a grey/brown colour with subtle stripes... no markings on the dorsal fin... just the typical spot about 3/4 the way down their body...
A few of them are starting to get their adult colours now as well, a more gold/orange colour....

mine are similar, maybe i have rainbows too

what do you feed them?

I guess you mean the babies?

Great looking tank . How often do your rainbow cichlids breeed and at what temps? I am looking into these cichlids .
Thanks

They are meant to be happiest at around 24 degrees in hard water, but mine are kept at 26 in neutral PH.
They were breeding once every 2 weeks, but they are back in my large community tank now with no real territory so they aren't so keen.
If I put them back in their own tank they would breed again within a couple of days...

Thank you very much that was helpfull. I intend to get a few . The tank will be just gravel and lots driftwood no plants

Just to add... don't get these if you have plants! They will get completely destroyed!

They don't have much colour as juveniles, but not red eyes. I'm not sure what to tell you.

nice tank!
will most of the fry survive or not??
AdAndrews1234 3 years ago
The cichlids are great as parents, and they tend to move the babies to areas of the tank where there is food etc.
I'm hoping at least 100 of them make it through... I have a seperate 4ft tank to raise them in once they are a little bit bigger!
