@SamongY Those are what wolves primarily eat. The wolves keep the herds healthy by picking off the weak animals. Humans usually hunt the strong, healthy ones. Now. If we didn't have the wolves picking off the weak ones, what would the herds be primarily consisting of? Weak, sickly elk. Those would be the ones that breed. If they were the ones that breed, then each generation would be weaker than the previous. This would make the elk vulnerable to disease and other nasty things.

This has NOTHING to do w/ Yellowstone. This are Wood Bison from northern Canada in the Wood Buffalo Nat'l Park. They are a distinct subspecies of Bison from the Bison in Yellowstone. I saw this documentary on tv several yrs. ago. Wood Buffalo Nat'l Park in northern Canada. Google "wood bison". Besides, Yellowstone is surrounded by mountains and you see no mountains in this clip, just flat land.

What we have in Yellowstone is not what we had 150 or 200 years ago out on the plains. We can pretend that we are putting the elk, bison, and wolves in a natural environment, but we are not. @l4mp13 Well over 100 years ago man totally changed the ecosystem. We then decided to have a beautiful park called Yellowstone. Not like things were before, but as good as we could get it. At least that has been the goal. Its not perfectly natural without wolves, its not perfectly natural with wolves. Neither is natural. What do we do? The best we can. We have to make choices between an unnatural park with healthy Elk, and Bison populations or an unnatural park with wolves.

Once we had great herds of bison that migrated through the plains with wolf packs following them. That was natural. That helped to cull the weak animals. Even the weak wolves that got injured or sick. A large bison herd can more easily protect the calves than a small herd. So a lot more of kills would have been weak adult bison. This was good for both bison and wolves. THEN CAME BUFFALO HUNTERS. Man has a way of messing things up.

1. The current bison have ancestry from within the Park. Both elk and bison existed in the Park before wolves were exterminated, so wolves never had to be killed to make it habitable. The NPS did exterminate them to increase ungulate herds, but then found that they overwhelmed and degraded the range. The NPS regularly had to slaughter elk to keep the rest from starving.
2. How is it the NPS's fault that ungulates can't get past Jackson? Wyoming ranchers demanded that the elk be contained and the buffalo shot at the border - not the NPS. Even if the fences were taken down, human development in the YNP-Pinedale corridor has created many more barriers and taken habitat out of circulation.
3. I would argue that had the NPS not protected the bison in the 1890's, it's likely that there wouldn't be any left outside private ranches today. They have done more to protect bison than harm them.
4.Rather than operating an "eco-gulag", the NPS is working very hard to ensure that a variety of species (perhaps the best measure of a helthy ecosystem) such as bison, wolves, grizzlies, and even cutthroat trout thrive.
They KILLED 10,000 between 2000-2003 . The N Yellowstone Elk herd was 19,000 strong in less than 3 years it was reduced to 6000-by 86 Wolves. Today that herd hovers at 7000 and there are no calves. That is just the N YSP herd. The Herd out of Dubois , Wyo is gone. In 2000 they issued 1500 late cow permits today 150 - 2008 Hunt season they harvested 10 cows. I guess I'd like to see some proof that the wolves have destroyed the wildlife in Yellowstone. All the studies I have read have indicated that they have not reduced elk or bison numbers significantly. Your contention that elk and bison never wintered over in the Park is also unfounded. Have a look at the documentation of the US Army from the early years of the Park. They made daily patrols in the winter to apprehend poachers, often finding them with dead bison and elk.
I'm also a little confused by your contention that the NPS has destroyed wildlife in the Park. For example, YNP sheltered and helped to re-establish bison in the lower 48 when people (not wolves) had nearly exterminated them. It remains a stronghold for grizzlies and the Yellowstone cutthroat (which the Park service is also helping to restore). Don't blame the wolves or PS because development of gas fields, mines, and ranches between YNP and Pinedale has cut animals off from that habitat.
Those leases are for sale(No Elk) !! These Elk - the few that are left go to the Feed Grounds. Artificial and part of the prison system - Eco- Gulag Yellowstone and it's subsidiary Eco -Gulag Jackson Hole. If things were as they should be Elk -Buffalo could make it from Jackson Hole to PineDale in one nite, this would give them a chance at survival. Jackson Hole is part of Grand Teton NP, not Yellowstone. The fence is there to separate the elk, known carriers of brucellosis, from Wyoming cattle (who brought the disease to the region in the first place.) These elk move from the high country of YNP down into the 'Hole. If you spend any time in the border regions of the Park as I have, you will see herds of elk migrating east toward Cody and North toward Livingston and Bozeman. That's why border leases are so highly valued by local guides

I respectfully disagree. Elk are free to leave the Park and do - just ask any hunting guide from southwestern Montana or northwestern Wyoming. Bison have been wintering over on the central plateau of the Yellowstone caldera for aeons,and resident elk herds have long wintered in the Firehole and Madison valleys. Research the records of the early US Army troops who protected them against poachers in the 1890's/1900's (when wolves roamed the Park) and you will see.

This has NOTHING to do w/ Yellowstone. This are Wood Bison from northern Canada in the Wood Buffalo Nat'l Park. They are a distinct subspecies of Bison from the Bison in Yellowstone. I saw this documentary on tv several yrs. ago. Wood Buffalo Nat'l Park in northern Canada. Google "wood bison". Besides, Yellowstone is surrounded by mountains and you see no mountains in this clip, just flat land.

There is no "Wild" left in the contenental United States sufficient to support the Wolf or the Buffalo. You can't get your virginity back or your Wilderness. What we have in Yellowstone is not what we had 150 or 200 years ago out on the plains. We can pretend that we are putting the elk, bison, and wolves in a natural environment, but we are not. In Yellowstone too many of the kills are calves. NOT GOOD. Folks I'm not a wolf hater, but whats going on at Yellowstone has some real problems.

Once we had great herds of bison that migrated through the plains with wolf packs following them. That was natural. That helped to cull the weak animals. Even the weak wolves that got injured or sick. A large bison herd can more easily protect the calves than a small herd. So a lot more of kills would have been weak adult bison. This was good for both bison and wolves. THEN CAME BUFFALO HUNTERS. Man has a way of messing things up.

I can see that we won't ever agree, even on what the supposed facts are. I don't think the purpose of YNP is to recreate what L and C saw. (In fact, they never saw it...)I do think part of its purpose is to have as healthy an ecosystem as possible. I think a healthy ecosystem has its indigenous species, but you think differently. 1. The current bison have ancestry from within the Park. Both elk and bison existed in the Park before wolves were exterminated, so wolves never had to be killed to make it habitable. The NPS did exterminate them to increase ungulate herds, but then found that they overwhelmed and degraded the range. The NPS regularly had to slaughter elk to keep the rest from starving.

2. How is it the NPS's fault that ungulates can't get past Jackson? Wyoming ranchers demanded that the elk be contained and the buffalo shot at the border - not the NPS. 3. I would argue that had the NPS not protected the bison in the 1890's, it's likely that there wouldn't be any left outside private ranches today. They have done more to protect bison than harm them.

I guess I'd like to see some proof that the wolves have destroyed the wildlife in Yellowstone. All the studies I have read have indicated that they have not reduced elk or bison numbers significantly. Your contention that elk and bison never wintered over in the Park is also unfounded. Have a look at the documentation of the US Army from the early years of the Park. They made daily patrols in the winter to apprehend poachers, often finding them with dead bison and elk.

I'm also a little confused by your contention that the NPS has destroyed wildlife in the Park. For example, YNP sheltered and helped to re-establish bison in the lower 48 when people (not wolves) had nearly exterminated them. It remains a stronghold for grizzlies and the Yellowstone cutthroat (which the Park service is also helping to restore). Don't blame the wolves or PS because development of gas fields, mines, and ranches between YNP and Pinedale has cut animals off from that habitat.

Jackson Hole is part of Grand Teton NP, not Yellowstone. The fence is there to separate the elk, known carriers of brucellosis, from Wyoming cattle (who brought the disease to the region in the first place.) These elk move from the high country of YNP down into the 'Hole. If you spend any time in the border regions of the Park as I have, you will see herds of elk migrating east toward Cody and North toward Livingston and Bozeman. That's why border leases are so highly valued by local guides

I respectfully disagree. Elk are free to leave the Park and do - just ask any hunting guide from southwestern Montana or northwestern Wyoming. Bison have been wintering over on the central plateau of the Yellowstone caldera for aeons,and resident elk herds have long wintered in the Firehole and Madison valleys. Research the records of the early US Army troops who protected them against poachers in the 1890's/1900's (when wolves roamed the Park) and you will see.

Free Coyote, your argument would be interesting if actual facts didn't contradict it. FACT: Wolves, elk and bison lived together for milenia in Yellowstone until wolves were exterminated by humans. FACT: Elk leave the park all the time. Bison could, too if not for state policy in Wyo/Mt. FACT: Elk and bison numbers have not been significantly impacted in a negative way by wolf re-introduction. FACT: "Our wildlife" includes all species indigenous to the Park, not just the herbivores.

Can these Videos be used in court as evidence ? The original number of Wolves that we were told would be in Park has been exceeded by a bunch. That is a Breech of Public Trust and it also opens the door for action on behalf of the Wolf because it puts an Endangered Species at risk, Reckless Endangerment which is a result of Gross Negligence. irwinnfawn. i do not know what your trying to prove. why would eat poop, we arnt dogs. i was just trying to say before, that all this vegan stuff is new. i mean we ate meat during the ice age, or maybe even before. and tatooinedragracer you are wrong , for one thing as you said, 'men was originally mean to eat only plants' that is false as we have canines and molars in our mouth to grip and shread our food - meat, if we were herbivores we would have some kind of beak or something.

Humans were made to be omnivores. we arn't designed for plants. you might say well, deer and giraffes and cows were made for plants. humans are omnivores not plants. but if your vegan that's evan worse. you won't grow aswell. you will probably get sick easier. and you will never try this delicous choclate - choc chip cookies, or even this delicous lamb chops or chicken schnitzel.

Man was originally meant to eat only plants. And an omnivore is animal or person that eats both meat and plants, but then you contradict what yourself when you say "we aren't designed for plants".

Pretty obvious that he means 'we aren't designed to strictly eat plants'. And it's quite true--we've go the teeth used to eat meat as well.
And there's evidence of meat-eating amongst our species for pretty much all of its existence, down to eating other species of human when we came in contact with it.

I survive and I dont eat anything that comes from animals. Humans dont need animals to survive anymore. We are no longer a natural being. People eating meat in post industrial countries today are just being excessive.

You really shouldn't blame someone you don't know for a process you don't understand in a place you aren't from. The alternative to controlling the wolf population in as fertile a place as Alaska is using the land for logging, cities, mining, or something more profitable than hunting and fishing (which is difficult when wolves are numerous and hungry enough to eat all the deer and threaten children). Palin didn't invent capitalism.
