My bad. I listened to the song in a different room, went into the studio and just started playing it. I was short a note. I realized that too when it was done, this whole demo was done in a few minutes.
It has a few, the vocals are stunning, but it has organ and strings. It isn't a synth that plays piano and 127 other sounds. It is a specialized tool for vocals. The VP-770 is now out, and has even more vocoder ability.
But, yes it's main purpose to to beef up vocals. When you listen to Def Leppard, their BG vocals have been run through this same process. Makes perfect harmonys.
daryledean: did you record the audio with an microphone for this clip? i think it's a little bit distorted - is it possible to overwrite the sound with a line-in signal?
Overpriced.., long way to go....? Are you kidding? Have you EVER used one of these things? Name me ONE hardware keyboard on the market that handles vocals the way this thing does. You've got it backwards.., it's not long way to go.., it's really "a long way we've come".
Well, the V-synth GT can do all the VP550 can do (AFAIK) plus you can synthesize any of the sounds and effects to create your own vocoder sound. Considering that the relative prices of the vp550 to the v synth GT, I think you get more out of the GT for the money.

If you can't sing well at all, does that matter when playing this thing?

It doesn't detect voice tone, just voice. I was talking when I did the demo. Go to your local Roland dealer and try it, you won't believe it!
