This video brings back good memories. I took my teenage son and some of his neighborhood friends on a couple of hikes to Camp Muir during the 1980's. I left Seattle in March of this year for sunny Florida, so now I am trying to get used to hiking flat terrain.
Beautiful hike... Another one to add to the list. Being from MN how much do you think the elevation would get to me? I imagine I would have to condition myself for the elevation somehow.
@eschwebach Actually, if you're conditioned to hiking and take it slow and easy you would do fine. You do notice the elevation gain but your body adjusts on the way up if you don't over exert yourself. St. Helens and Camp Muir are very similar hikes - but offer very different views. If you have a chance to do them, you won't be disappointed. You will experience an overwhelming sense of accomplishment, and a smile you'll wear for weeks : )
Wow, what a place. I've seen the mountain from afar a long time ago. I've been told that the trail that circles around the mountain is one of the best hikes on the globe. I think it's called the wonderland trail. Beautiful shots, a real pleasure to watch.
Nice video! Keep making them and keep climbing! my dad and I are planning to climb to camp muir here in august, now that some of the snow has melted. bring a lot of water i know, and some snacks, but when you take breaks, do you just grab the water , or do you have water and snacks?
@darrenchromey Good for you - you'll enjoy it! Sunscreen and water will get you most of the way. We lunched about 3 hours in. There are plenty of spots to stop and guage your hunger. There is no real need to push too hard - you can always look back behind you and have plenty to see. Make sure you carry your essentials, as you know - be prepared to stay anywhere on the way up - but you'll be in good company this month. ENJOY IT - you and your Dad will do just fine!
@dragonflyhiker I thought the same thing - that chipmunk was completely misplaced - no trees, just rocks! Were it was at, the melt will reach it soon...
This is simply stunning. What a gorgeous place. I would love to hike it. Wow. You did an excellent job on this video. I'd be hardpressed to decide between x-country skis or downhill. LOL! Looks like there would be some good downhill runs there. :) :) Looks like such a FUN trip!! Thank you for sharing. Since I live at 7'000 feet, the altitude would not bother me. :) :)
@RainforestRobin Ah - so you're one of them?! Haha! Slip on more ski skins and glide right up the mountain - good for you! Those skiers really impressed me, all the way up, and down. You would do great on Mt. Rainier Robin - has a nice ring to it would you say? Thank you for your really nice comment.
Amazing! Pretty sure I saw my place (in BC) from up there!!! Spectacular views! Sliding down has to be the best part - I would be giggling the entire way down!
@BCkayakcamper I'm sure you did - it was clear enough. I took so many time-outs to just see it all. Enjoyed it so much up there! And yes, the glissading brings out the kids in us! : )
@ez2curanut 4.5 up. 2.5 down - with plenty of time thrown in for the video cam and digi camera. No stove, but I did carry it with. Next time I will most definately play with a stove - kinda miss them not being able to use it on the last two. Thanks my friend!
This one deserves way more likes :o) "LIKE" What a ride man! Awesome views Yeehaw...haha! Looked like a very cool hike my friend :o) Thanks for the views man! You could probably see the Yukon from way up there eh?...haha! Beautiful. I gotta; make my way down there some year :o)
@Ggreenvideos Yee Haw buddy! I did see some glittering way up north there! I know you would absolutely love it up there that high. There's Mt. Baker too - just across the border my brother!
Wow what a clear day that was. Very nice trip thanks so much for sharing this. I'm wondering if at any point during the accent did your thighs BURST into flames? That looks like quite an uphill climb there. Love the video of the slide down the hill. I'll bet you "almost" wanted to climb back up and do it again but....nahhh :-) Very nice Bruce..I mean Bill... Looks like a great time.
@dmacken11 Funny you mention the thighs Dave. (Yes, Dave)! I did not make it to Camp Muir - 1,000 feet of elevation short. I could not keep strength in my legs. Nothing was sore or hurting, just no leg strength. I've never felt that before on any previuos hike. I was told later I was not conditioned for the elevation. You're right, I should have gone right back up that mountain to slide down again. That would help in the conditioning - you rhink?! LOL! Thanks Dave - haha!
@wawhiker Hmm...Conditioned for the elevation? Where they talking about something related to Oxygenated blood? I know those that climb Everest aclimate themselves for days at high elevation. I wonder if that is similar. The first thing that came to my mind was those damn electrolytes though too. What were you taking in as far drink and food before and during the climb? I swear that Gatorade "Prime" worked the time I took it before a hike. I interested in what they talked to you about.
@dmacken11 We're back from family vacation - much like a Chevy Chase movie - just kidding! I was eating Sport Beans all the way up - no problem there. Yes - blood oxygen. In fact, Mount Rainier is a trainer for climbers to Everest - I'm so there Dave, LOL!
Ok, it must be like a right of passage for you folks out in the northwest, climb the big 3! I am now waiting for Mt Hood! Splendid video yet again, ahhh, I went hiking today in the catskills and its like ahhhh wish I was on the other coast hiking! Glad to see such great hikes on your videos, defiantly inspires Kim and I to travel to the most beautiful hiking places, and the northwest is one of the best! Thank You for the video Bill!
@ihikearoundcom Maybe I'll get an invite for Mt. Hood from Beast12101 or OregonMike. Then there's Mt. Baker. I don't doubt you and Kim will make it up this way. I still can't believe you visited Sepp - that was amazing! Thanks Matt!
Wawhiker -- The Human Bobsled! Man, that looks like sooo much fun! That is an impressive elevation gain too. What is the elevation of timber line in your area? Epic vistas! Hiking all the way up to get those great scenic views and then to jump on a contractors bag and slide all the down looks like my kind of a trip. I'm gonna try this someday. Excellent video Bill! 2 thumbs and 2 toes up! :-D
@CrazyTaileZ Haha - and toes too - I like it Matt, thanks! As I was sliding down I was thinking "I should have brought the pulk sled"! It really is a blast! We lose our trees between 5 and 6 thousand feet. The trees were pretty much gone just up from Paradise Park and that's at 5,400. I'm sensing a glissade in a future CrazyTaileZ vid!
Stunning, stunning views!! It looks like the mountain was very kind to you on your trip my friend. All that snow sure looks good right now too! Seems as though you made a new friend on this hike as well ;-) Thanks for capturing all of this beautiful footage and putting it all together so perfectly to share with us Bill.
@intenseangler Always a pleasure to have you along John! I've really have lucked-out on my mountain hikes the past two seasons. That little guy must live amoung the rocks because there are no trees. Shooting vids up there makes it easy when all that scenery is all around you. Do enjoy those gear / skill intensive descents - haha!
@Woodenarrows Thanks Jim. We were a group of three at the higher elevation. There were some really large groups. And then we all tend to bunch up at certain points. I lag behind just to break away from the crowds.
Must be a popular climb seeing the amout of people , I also get a chuckle each time I see a pearson walking in shorts thru the snow. Some awesome views Bill.
@medicjimr Too popular, too many climbers on a sunny weekend. I kept my pant legs on for sun protection, but it's pleasant up there. Appreciate your comment, always Jim.
