  • This is one very "pale" video. =p

  • I ponder exactly where the improper sort of comments are.

  • my new 4x4 is really annoying. when i try to take it apart, it stays together (i could use more force, but i'm afraid i might break it), but recently, it popped on his own.

  • 1:37 is my 3x3 Rubik's cube record... :D You pwn me with the 4x4.

  • I'm in the middle of modding mine right now. Do u have an idea on how to get the edges from popping?

  • Worst come to worst, I won't have to deal with a rubik's4x4 anymore! i'll try this

  • Wont the lubercant leak out of the cube as you use it?

  • i watched a 12 min video on how to mod a rubiks cube, i dont even have one

  • hey is WD-40 a good lube because my friend said it would mess up my cube but i used it on my ice cube and it works fine

  • @DT4598 I don't think the Ice Cube is necessarily a good cube to benchmark that on. I've had two cubes come apart in my hands (the core broke apart, not just a pop) because someone used WD-40 or some oil based lubricant. Only use 100% silicone lubricants!

  • @Thrawst same here i had a cube and my classmate was scrambling it, he dropped it and you know the rest

  • @Thrawst OK cool thanks... On an unrelated note... I am NEVER buying a Rubik's brand cube again!!! I just bought a 4x4 from a Barnes & Noble and it fell apart after 3 days of use... I put it back to gether and it just kept falling apart after like one turn!!! What would be the best brand to buy from on amazon? My best friend just got a white 4x4 from a brand called Lan-Lan and it is the BEST cube I have ever felt! I was wondering if he just got lucky or if all their cubes are like this. Thanks

  • @DT4598 Dayan+Mf8, Shengshou and X-Cube are all good 4x4's

  • @MLSTRMRVLTN Ok... Thanks! I will check those out!

  • @DT4598 WD40 melts plastic dude...

  • @RCT3rox ok well i didnt really know that but thanks for the input! ill remember that for future reference...

  • squirclish

  • can you use a metal file then smooth it out with sandpaper

  • just a hint, when working with plastic and dremels, use a low speed if you want to sand or cut it. that way it doesnt melt and make ugly edges

  • I cant take mine apart T.T

  • @Loga1219 mine also, but move the top layer 45° and then take a egde piece but when one of the gaps is already out, TWIST the piece and it takes apart, it works!

  • lol "it's a real shape, i swear!"

  • I tried taking apart my 4x4 and the centre piece broke :(

  • @kylemcgrath98 New 4x4s have a new kind of mechanism, similar to the rubik's 5x5. You have to be really careful when disassembling them.

  • Dear Thrawst, the rubiks 4x4 brand is now different i cant take pieces apart. I tried a flat head screw driver and it still doesnt work. Please reply back.

  • @qbat77 pop the left edge out part ways, then gently twist it clockwise. It should come out. trust me I got a new one YESTERDAY

    ~dolajakevan

  • @dolajakevan

    thanks for help. =)

  • what lubes do you use should make a vid if you have spare time

  • there is also a really good corner mod for the rubiks 4x4 you round down the pointy corners of the triangle on the corner stock (with sandpaper or a dremel) it should reduce lock-ups even further

  • where can i get a 4x4 cube?

  • i like the little pr fix lol

  • Squircle is a portmanteau word used to refer to a mathematical shape with properties between those of a square and those of a circle. It is a special case of superellipse.

  • i did it with sand paper, there was so significant change but thanks anyway.

Does anyone know what a good lubricant would be? (one that doesnt ruin the cube)

  • This did indubitably reduced lockups, but that doesn't changed that I vacuumed up a piece of my 4x4 :(. Maru time!

  • will this work on a mefferts? and make it better?

  • can i use "liquid wrench silicone spray" form auto zone to lube my cube

  • what part of it are you sanding the middle bottom or the "foot"

  • I NEED A MOD FOR NOOOOOO POPS!!!!!!!!!!!! My cube is bad on popping

  • what lube was that?

  • thats cool i am afraid to do that to my cube

  • gread mod

  • Did your mod, still locks up but it's was worth modding it.

  • the squircle is the v-cube 7 shape!

  • Do you know how to adjust Easten Sheen 4x4x4?

  • Rubik's, Meffert's or Esten Sheet,Which one is the best brand of 4x4x4?

  • @wenhsiang3 I advise Yj which stands for Younjoung

  • @wenhsiang3 Mefferts ......or eastsheen ......rubiks brand 4x4s are crap

  • wat kind of lubricant do u use?

  • I did the mod and then lubricated it and now if you make a two layer turn to fast the whole thing falls apart and it pops all the time so DONT LUBE IT AFTER THE MOD!!!

  • how do you put the edges back on mine are stuffed!

  • i moded everything. every point on the inside is perfect. did it all with a file and took 2 days. best cube i have ever used... although its also the only 4x4 lol

  • thank you so so so so much!!!!!!!!!! this helped so much!!! u earned another subscriber!! :)

  • worked thanks

  • Completely worked I used sand paper and also cut the corrners first mod I did I used wierd greece on it that makes any cube 1000 times better

  • Squircle: New favorite word.

  • ahh...the dremel. any serious cuber has one

  • did this to mine and it pops around 5 times a (speed)solve (pop include center edge and corner piece) but i dont care i already have a qj mini 4x4 much better

  • Yeah, its not your mods fault :) Its my stupid 4x4s fault :)

  • It works really good but, It pops WAY to much now.

  • I think there's a certain point where all Rubik's 4x4s get where they're too loose for practical solving. This mod becomes moot at that point.

  • would you recomend a rubiks or an eastsheen 4x4x4

  • eastsheen. but do camcubers mod

  • rubixmania123:

    i recommend mefferts!

  • i think you can adjust the screw.

  • dinoyoshi258:

You can't adjust the screw on the rubiks 4x4.

  • @beaulolp mine doesnt, i have the latest version :D

  • i have a 4x4 that is like a regular rubiks 4x4 in colour but mine is mosaics and not stickers and is a lot faster and smoother, i love it, and by the way, what does FTW stand for? always wondered...

  • for the win

  • oh thanks hyunchoi98, i've been wonderin that for a while...

  • I just finished modding 10 mins ago nd i would like to say SQURICLE FTW!!!!!!!!

  • sometimes it locks at the corners :(

  • man that helped a TON. you would think rubiks would just round the corners of thier piece molds. it would make the cubes MUCH smoother. thanks

  • do you also need to sand down the corners

  • I must say thrawst. This mod help a TON! I love how it doesnt lock up. It is stiff but I havent lubed it. Thanks for the tutorial!

  • cant you just try to remove the whole square?

  • I think you mislead everyone on the eye protection. I've had my dremel for about four days (wow) now, and when modding my 3x3x3, I was at a safe distance and a piece of plastic hit me right in between my nose and right eye. And I felt a small impact. So I say EYE PROTECTION IS REQUIRED. Lucky for me it missed my eye

  • you misspelled speed

  • the mod was sort of already done for me just from use.

  • or u cut just play with a rubiks 4x4 for about a year :d

  • lockup at 11:03= mod fail :P

  • what would you say about putting patroleum jelly in a cube?

  • Thrawst, My 4x4 pieces keep popping out when i'm speedsolving, What should i do?

  • you sanded down the wrong part of the center piece mine did that too

  • 11,000th VIEWER LOL THATS COOL

  • No, a squarcle is a square with round corners not round edges.

  • is the v-cube a swircle

  • do you prefer the rubiks 4x4 over the eastsheen..?

  • i am halfway done with this mod....not sure how its gunna work yet......hope my cube doesnt fall apart :)

  • I just finished this mod today...it works. The catch is that you need to pay attention to ALL the details of EACH piece. I took the time to do it right using a Dremel, sandpaper, and even a pocket knife to carve the corners directly.

I'd say my "new" Rubik's 4x4 has reduced lockups by about 25%, but it is so much easier to get out of lockups than before the mod.

    Thanks Thrawst! =D

  • you messed up a bit when you were talking about fining the edges down, you said low grit instead of high grit, low would make it super rough...

I tried this, but one of my centers was (already) broken, and I shaved down (I think it was) the first foot as you called it. Didn't do crap xD

  • haha, what kinda gifts do you get

  • my rubiks 4x4 didnt even click at all, it was fine but then i didn't play with it for awhile, then plastic dust got inside. i cleaned it out and 3 seconds later, i check the inside and its covered in puzzle dust again. The dust slows down the turning, therefore, my fingers get tired when i turn it =( but i have an eastsheen 4x4 =)

  • wad happens when u touch the dremel?

    sorry i dun mod stuff

  • lol when you said fairly low grid 60 grid, works very well. i dunno if you already know this but the lower the grid the rougher it is so the faster the job is done.

  • my rubiks brand is lubed with WD-40 is so over lubed it turns like its modded like this. it rarely pops n what not, and i washed off all the lube. im buying a can of jig-a-loo cuz i ordered like 10 DIYs from cube4you (i have no normal 3x3s.. just yankee cubes and a cube from my camp with their logos on it) =[

  • Sandpaper failed and the dremel was too nerve-racking to use

  • Somewhat worked, still has tons of lockups

  • lol roflol squirclke hahaha!

  • lol, sqircle

  • my best time for a 4x4 is 3:20 something. on an eastsheen cube. i must really suck.

    35.15 on a 3x3 tho :) for some reason I can solve a 3x3 almost as fast as a 2x2.

  • mine is

    2x2: like 17 secs

    3x3: 27 secs

    4x4: 3:20

  • @kanzosuoremo

wtf lol i also get like 3:10 with a NORMAL rubiks 4x4

    but i got like 1min for 3x3

    weird eh?

  • awsome thanks i only used WD40

  • WD40 IS BAD

  • Anything with anything oil related is baad.

  • @rubikscuber927 my friend pud WD40 in his it spins about as fast as silicone but it locks it up. A LOT

  • IF you mod this too much, you'll regret it. I played with my soo much, and lubed a little, my cube became soo loose, that almost everytime I try to cut a corner, a couple pieces will pop off, and some bottom pieces might come off because the top side is too loose. Becareful because now I want a new one!

  • i dont wana do all that for a little toy :P

  • toooo much work for this bad cube....

  • thamx :D

  • would this work on an eastsheen as well?

  • eastsheen doesnt use a ball core like rubiks

  • umm...that is why i was asking...plus he doesnt modify the ball core....

  • the only reason you modify the rubiks 4x4 is BECAUSE of the ball core. Eastsheen uses a different kind of core and uses a different modification

  • wow, i think you need to chill...and not be so arrogant about it...it was just a question. Plus he didnt really explain why it wouldnt work on an eastsheen.

  • what? i wasnt being arrogant i was just saying the differences. i made it short and sweet. im not trying to insult u or anything

  • rubiks 4x4 is fucking annoying i love cubing but i hate this fucking cube parity is annoying but the lockup makes me crazy

  • use the cage method to avoid parity

  • For sandpaper, wrap it around a small block of wood and it's easier to scrape.

  • is this how u spell dremile?

  • dremel

  • so how did u lube it?

  • silicon spray or vaseline

  • silcon

vaseline over time is dugsiting and sticky

  • Silicon or Jig-A-Loo.

STAY AWAY FOR DW-40!! It melts the cube.

And be careful, I've herd and seen cases of pieces getting stuck together with Jig-A-Loo. Do a little recherche about how to lube it the right way.

  • vaseline for beginners many ppl thinks it will destroy the cube but it only takes very lil of the plastic but if u got silicon spray in your house you use it and if your going to cube further and not just learning on the cube then find silicon spray ive used vaseline i wanna use siliconspray but i cant find it :/

  • You don't need only silicone. Jig-A-Loo Works. Just go to a homehardwhere or Home Depot, or any department store. Even wall-Mart!

  • don't use vaseline. you're better off using mayo.

  • rofl

  • sooo....mayo doesnt work?

    darn it...

  • try goin to LOWES. thats where i got mine from. near the hardware section

  • i use WD 40

  • well W 40 is something that isnt good for your ur cube... well im not sure on how to explain it but this 1 time i sprayed WD 40 on my cube and instead of it getting faster, it turned slower...

  • and another thing is it has petrolium distilits in it so it can damage a cube too

  • I used to much, and it melted a little.

  • which is better, sandpaper or nail filer?

  • sandpaper is faster, but it is harder to get it on your designated spots. the file is a long process but is easy to sand the correct spot.

  • can you please tell me where to buy a 3x3x3 rubiks cube.

  • rubik's brand you can get at walmart

  • its the squircle mod

  • referring to 3:04 lol I looked up "squircle" on wiki lol... (It's really there...)

  • this is the best thing since sliced bread!

  • what part of the center are you actually smoothing out cause it looks like there is a first layer second layer and then third layer?

  • the 2nd layer.

  • thanks

  • i did this mod, but i dont really think it worked because it still locks up a lot... but it was worth a try

  • look at desctiption

  • i just melted it!!! :)

  • lol. i tape all my centers together so they don't move and then put in the edges and then the corners.

  • dude you help me put togrther a 4x4 rubiks cubr thank you you rock

  • I'm working on it, when done, I will post a video comment

  • really nice tutorial

  • you have a very good vocabulary

  • the rubiks clone on deal extreme already has this mod

    and tiles

  • Do you wash your cubies? I definitely wash them before putting it back together. And btw my 4x4 works great even with 2 sides remaining to be sanded.

  • will it be as fast as an eastsheen

  • i suggest cube lube from rubiks(.)com

  • Are you RobH06209?

  • ...i don't think so. If you can see me in my videos, then you would be able to deduct that I am not RobH0629, as we don't have the same faces.

  • Thrawst. Do you know why the new rubiks 4x4 locks up more than the old one?? cuz the re-tooled one have deeper and more holes and it can lock up that way. and of course that way you showed

  • go RobHO6209

  • took over a 60 seconds off

    i used a pocket knife

  • 6:09 to 6:30 = dentistry torture

  • It also works on a Meffert's 4x4:

    watch?v=F2u3flqU1uY

  • great mod :D.... my 4x4 is awesome now !!

  • squircle lulz

  • Will a nail filler work? As far as I know, I don't have sandpaper or a dremel.

  • thanks for the mod

the middle layers move extra smoothly now

    thanks

  • didnt work for me =\

cube now barely moves and pops happen almost every SINGLE turn

  • great video!

  • 0:01

  • don't u use an eastsheen 4x4 cube?

  • Obviously not...

  • sweet

  • mu rubiks 4x4 is so loose after i lubricated it that it gets stuck because its so loose... -.-

  • Thanks Thrawst, my Rubik's now pwnz my mefferts and my eastsheen. Wonderful mod!

  • I would like to have an Rubik Brand 4x4x4 they look stiffer than the Eastsheen,I am quite afraid to force my Eastsheen.

  • My 4x4 Rubiks is and were reeally loose storebought. Guess i was unlucky. Id rather have it stiffer like yours.
