Sadly, Akira Kushida, and others like him, are becoming a thing of the past. All the heroic music of the old robot anime and tokusatsu (think like Power Rangers or Super Sentai) is falling by the wayside in favour of current popular music by L'arc en Ciel and others.

It's MEANT to be a cliche robot-anime! The cliches and gratuitously exaggerated fanservice add to the humour of the series! The charm of the series, right from Akira Kushida's voice in the main theme, to the skimpy outfits of the female pilots, and the way they all scream out the names of their attacks in Engrish is meant to remind us of a simpler day of awesome robot anime! Mazinger, Robotech, and their ilk.
