  • I need to go there! Sweet video.

  • And I though my 10" dobsonian would be a beast...

  • Did he say, "they had a big ass telescope...?" :)

  • get to go there on satruday for a school trip!

  • Active optics = maintaining the shape of the mirror by means of actuators underneath the primary mirror (M1)

Adaptive optics = reducing atmospheric distortions by means of a wave analyzer, real-time analysis of the atmospheric turbulence with a LASER and corrective optics.

  • Thanks for sharing this cool video!

  • George Ellery Hale recieved frequent visions from an Elf to help his research.

  • Nerds are cool!

  • The LA fire is seriously threatening Mt Wilson at the moment.

The firefighters have said that currently, the fire is "boss". Sucks.

  • The fire is very unfortunate news! Hopefully it will be gotten under control. There very will could be rain coming up, though, which after a fire can bring the threat of mudslides. I'm hoping for the best, or at least not the worst.

  • It looks like the observatory's gonna make it through unscathed. Close call there--unfortunately, fire has caused at least two deaths, many many homes lost.

  • I'm glad to hear about the observatory, but still sad for all the people who lost so much to the fires (some of it probably irreplaceable). Was the cause ever really determined? All I heard was some back and forth opinions.

  • Palacious

    Pa`la´cious

    a.1.Palatial.

  • Einstein wwoooooo! E=MC HAMMER mother f**KERS ^_^

  • YES.

  • I know that I worship science, it has given me everything I know. Religion has given me nothing...because while it is man-made, it is useless to me and mankind on any practical level. Myths are fun when your 7 not 27.

  • Myths can be fun at any age (I still enjoy lots of mythology for the fiction that it is). It just becomes less rational to actually believe them as you get older.

On to other topics: thunderf00t is walking in the footsteps of great scientific minds. How appropriate! Literal and figurative.

  • I am allways astounded when people acuse sceptics of worshipping science because the reverence i feel for the discoveries of science are entirly based on what has been showen to be reasonable to asume not on any type of faith. equally the idea that science is some sort of sinister entity is often promoted by the very same people despite the obvous stupidity of this anthropomorisation of science. great videos nice work

  • Einstein stood here. Very cool.

  • What about the mule team driver?

  • 3:24 the chair.

  • our chairs look just like that!!!!!!!

  • how does it feel being part of such marvelous history of exploration, TF? :))

  • So I guess they didn't allow you to eat jerky or granola bars in the observatory, f00t?

  • you made it...you don't have swine flu anymore

  • Hey Tf thanx for the vid man. sorry if this sounds religious but in a way you were standing in a holy place. To think that is where Hubble helped to exspand our understanding of the universe and our place within it.

  • And to think of all those people who say that science decreases the beauty of the universe...

  • That's incredible. It's amazing to think that we needed to create something as complicated as this just to discover that we had much more work ahead of us than we thought.

  • You have never had so much fun have you?

  • This makes me so jealous, I so wish I was you right now.

I guess it makes up for the poor quality of output you got when talking with Ray Comfort.

I hope you continue to have a great trip and seeing many of the great wonders.

  • I'm an amateur photographer and I'd absolutely love to have come along on the trip. He's gone to so many interesting places.

  • That was awesome!

  • you really deserve an award for this channel alone! thank you for your massive contribution to the youtube community, mrgeniusontv.

  • Oh to be Hubble in that moment of discovery! Indescribable no doubt.

  • nausinora....I agree with you, what a feeling that must of been. Only matched perhaps by Galileo. Cool to think about.

  • You can see this very telescope in operation on a COSMOS video recreation (I've forgotten the episode).

  • He compares the innards of the facility to a battleship. Rather apropo really, I mean, the stair case enters the revolving station of the telescope. Not unlike a turret on a battleship.

  • Great stuff!

  • these vids are very enjoyable, thx again

  • Fair play, you could do with some exercise mate... heh :P

  • Seems a few people are missing that he's already almost out of breath at the very beginning of the video.

  • Exactly... Heh.

  • altitude or something?? idk maybe just unfit

  • It is the altitude. The Mt Wilson observaitory is at 5715 ft or 1742m.

Tfoot really went that extra mile for this video, (actualy 1.08 miles) ;-)

  • thanks Th. excellent little tour, wish I could go someday,

  • But this video has nothing to do with Bigfoot!!!

  • 2:05 so that's the stairway to heaven!

  • I was thinking the exact same thing

  • "so yea, Einstein stood here"

    gtfo!

Its like...standing where he stood, and then imagining how lucky you are to be in the exact same spot!

  • Your standing where someone important in History once was.

I wouldnt be one to act all hyper or anything, but it does make me think.

Say I were to be in the exact spot a Roman general once stood, and looked out and tried to imagine the battle unfold in my own eyes.

Its just like a deep reflection.

  • I, on the other hand, get much more giddy than I should. lol

  • It's just a way to make an abstract historical figure seem somewhat more real.

You tie the abstract to the concrete, and it's maybe a bit easier to understand that Einstein wasn't just some guy from a physics text book, but a person not so very different from yourself, who once was where you are now.

Perhaps a bit overly dramatic, but something worth thinking about, nonetheless.

  • God damn, tf00t is out of breath from climbing those stairs? You should take care of your health man. :(

    Great vid.

  • I'm really enjoying these Mount Wilson videos mate, thanks alot.

  • IMA FIREIN MAH LAZORZ!!!

  • How's the 'energy' in a spot where Einstein stood.

    Just kidding.

Thanks for the great footage, and for this channel.

It saves me from watching the stupid glitz and glamor type of "science" on the discovery channel. This is what those channels should be like.

  • Egads man, you sound exhausted! You really should get a good night's sleep!

  • Keep the videos coming Thunderf00t. Can anybody wander into these magnificent devices or is there a protocol that you need to go through.

  • I'm sure he talked to whoever was running the place.

  • Tf00t - UI have no idea if you read your PMs or comments, but you shuld have let us know when you were going to be up at the observatory - I would have come up there to say hi.

  • Tf00t appears to be happiest in solitude. If true then don't take it as a personal insult. It's just how some people are wired.

  • I'm the same way. An introvert, who is driven by his intuitiveness and judging, to show extroverted qualities in an attempt to instruct or inform.

    Google "Myers-Briggs" for a better explanation ;-)

  • i'm guessing that he simply gets way too many pms/comments to read them all if any.

  • The reason why he didn't tell people where he was going to be and when is because he didn't plan any of it. He originally planned on letting people know but he put up a video saying that he didn't really know how long it would take him to reach the destinations. He has more freedom to do what he wants this way.

  • I appreciate that, Stig, but as he drew closer to his destinations a little note here and there would have been nice, although I also appreciate his right to privacy and solitude.

I didn't really expect a response, and as it turned out I was way too hungover to be driving anywhere on Saturday.

  • great vid

  • Excellence.

  • Thank you for all your efforts to share your wonderful journey across America and the special highlights of your trip.

Your videos are a pleasure to watch! Keep them coming!

  • good video

  • Now thats cook, thanks for the vids mate

  • Great stuff.

  • This is quite a piece of history.

  • Impressive building

  • that was pointless and stupid.

    who cares?

  • aaah.

    still kinda stupid. XD

  • your just jealous i was first. lol

    sore loser.

  • Two things that put Holland light years ahead of the good ol' US of A, still locked in stone age christian mentality. Land of the free indeed.

  • thats still only 2.

  • Don't forget the CD

  • I have to agree - Holland is the freest country I've ever spent time in.

Unfotunately the salaries in California are considerably higher, so needs must...

  • lol thank you. I thought your first reply was rather good and humorous. But I see that your brain isn't being used optimally. I rather be know for just weed and hookers then for war and tyranny. Look, we were once in the same spot as you are. We tried to rule the world and kill everyone who stood in our way. But it failed. So we decided well, let's just give everyone the ability to chill and to fuck. Well, still one of the most happy and chilled out places on earth.

  • i think we should take over your country. we can do it you know.

  • legalizemarijuananos - Holland designed and built the Carver.

The Carver was driven and owned by British broadcaster Jeremy Clarkson who hosts one of the worlds largest automotive TV show in the world with 350,000,000 viewers worldwide. Other countries (US, Russia, Australia etc) are trying to get their own version of the TV show.

So don't knock a nation that made a vehicle with that much of an impact.

  • never heard of the carver and just because some british guy owned one doesnt mean it had an impact. the carver didnt make him popular it just means he liked to collect things.

  • legalizemarijuananos - I never said it made HIM popular. He was already popular.

What I'm saying is a 3 wheeled vehicle that can tilt to a 45 degree angle while the rear wheels do not tilt is very impressive and a very famous vehicle show were very impressed by it.

Therefore, they made a very interesting and imaginative vehicle.

  • ok, but what does all this have to do with me being first?

  • And we colonised your country. We are partially responsible for your existence.

  • how did my "first" comment turn into a debate about nationality.

u guys are sick in the head.

  • The funny thing about this huge debate spreading out from your comment is you weren't even first, ReverendAtomSmasher was and he didn't was his time putting the word 'first' and offering nothing else.

  • i was the first with the 'first" comment. no one else beat me too it so i think your just jealous too.

  • Hit all comments and go look, I don't really care.

  • no you didn't some folks who lived years ago did, this sort of discussion is ridiculous.

  • Thanks TF00t :)

  • Wonderful.
