He hired an actual alcoholic to play the part, but the guy couldn't stop shaking and kept spewing up green shit, so Mel had to let him go and because Gene was desperate for the part, he gave it to him. :D

Not only with this movie, but others as well. He is the Parody King. And honestly, if he chose to make a movie similar to 'Blazing Saddles' today, I'd be the first in line to buy a ticket at my local cinema.
