  • BENAL!

  • This is amazing.

    You are amazing.

    I am amazed.

  • So many people seem to read so much into things that they miss the simplest possible answer.

The song focuses on the time they spent together and on things they did while together. Back then, they "owned the night" together. They did things together that only they know. They both still remember that, the past is still forever theirs to remember, and the past can never be undone. The time they spent together remains in their memories even though they are now apart.

  • I should have watched this before my English exam. Such good revision :P

  • I downloaded this song a few days before I discovered your analysis of it I loved it then, and now that I know what it means I love it more.

  • my opinion on why it ends with "can't be undone" is just that. what has happened has happened and that is that, the future is whats important, live for tomorrow.... and stuff.

  • Wie oft ist jemand gerade in den Klassenraum gelaufen, als du das Video gedreht hast?^^

  • Not 'emphasise', but 'emphasis', at 7:40.. :)

  • The picture of Nerimon is amazing

  • Just bought the mp3, thanks to you. I'm a bit late for Christmas, though.

  • I've got to find that song. And the Silly you dancing at the end is priceless. :D

  • Pure genius. This seems to be a very tricky aesthetics puzzle rather more than it is an explanation of aesthetic techniques. But it is certainly true that your video deserves glorification much more the song does.

  • "We own the night and it can't be undone." seems to imply that the characters in the song lost their virginity to each other.

  • It's ok, I'm American and I get all of my knowledge about my own culture from watching TV and the movies. Oh yes, and the news. God I love the news. And mocking it. Generously.

  • You have very pretty chalkboard handwriting.

  • It sounds like a male corporate mogul talking to female male corporate reminiscing about their past business adventures but now they grew old and all they have are their memories of being young and in charge. So the answer is they grew old and what they did is set in stone. <<<Oh look a metaphor! ;)

  • Sorry. As a person who aided Rage Against The Machine to get to Christmas number 1 a few years ago, I couldn't bring myself to get a happy, upbeat song to number 1. :/

  • I like that fact that these videos are funny and informative.

  • I like your videos, very interesting and fun to watch.

  • *cough*cough* anaphora *cough*cough* ;)

  • @neleabels Absolutely. I have no idea how that could happen! Why didn't I look this up?! I thought I did! This is a bad day. Baaaad day! *distraught* (a.k.a. cornered perfectionist) ;)

  • great!! ich liebe deine Videos!! und muss immer sooo lachen ^^ was unterrichtest du eigentlich? und ich liebe es wie viele reclams und cds du hast! cool.

  • @traumtanztrapez Dankeschön! Ich unterrichte Deutsch und Französich.

  • Very well done! I wish my (German) English teachers here in Stuttgart had such a nice British accent as you do :D (seriously, you'd be shocked - some of them don't even seem to be able to hold a proper conversation in English, I wonder how they got the job!?).

  • Now of course, being a future English teacher I have to write a NEW comment to correct the spelling mistake in mY first one (not mt)

I figure I can also use this space to answer your problem: To me, the emphasis on the "and it can't be undone" holds twofold importance. Remeber, this song was relased in the hopes of taking the British charts by storm. An anarchic movement like that succeeding would have profound and lasting impact. Also, the thematic message of creating lasting memories rings out

  • So hard to find a time during your lesson (which is what this is, cleverly disguised as a critique. #applause) to pause in order to write a comment. (Please find enclosed a compliment) I enjoyed watching this. It reminded me why I subscribed to your channel. I hope you won't mind my taking pointers from you for my future Vlogging and indeed mt teaching career. Forever Yours. Reb (Do you see what I did there? That was an ironi.... Oh, you do see. Right. Ok. Shutting up now.)

  • This vid is a favorite on Saint John's

  • i have an english language exam tomorrow, this is revision.

  • I'm off to listen to the song! Again! I love Alex Day. :D

  • Ahahaa I like you. *Subscribe* Ahh analyzing songs. I initially thought the end "now we own the night" meant he finally achieved his dream in relation to the line about money... being independent and all that jazz. But now not sure. My brain hurts. I don't usually analyze songs in depth because sometimes, I think people put words into the artist's mouth that wasn't meant to mean the analysis in the first place. fgkwnkg words. How did I get a 6 on my FCAT writes while I was a sophomore..

  • About the ending of the song...

If the song ended on the forever your's line, then it would indicate that the singer had accepted the end of his relationship. Since he ended on the "Now we own the night" line, I get the feeling that he still holds onto the dream that he could have a fun and happy relationship "that can't be undone." It's a more somber ending, as the singer is still holding onto his dream instead of accepting the sad reality.

  • Wish you were my english teacher :(

  • Great video! I've watched 3 times already!! :D

  • @HansTheBoss There's a movie quote I've heard a few times that goes 'Come on darling, have some decency!' so he just reversed it so that it implied that he wanted the friend to enjoy life more, basically for them to have more memories before they get too old to do these things.

  • Why does everything have to be analyzed? Can't we just enjoy the song and not think?

  • @SunKimDiCaprio Because analysing something gives it a new depth. I love analysing things, because then I can enjoying it in two different ways - justing listening and enjoying the song, like you, and thinking about the deeper meaning. If you don't want to think about it analysed that's fine, but many people get a lot more enjoyment once they can see the beauty beyond what is just there and available to everyone.

  • .....There's probably a simpler way to say what i just said

  • Maybe to force you to think about what it means for a few seconds longer after the song ends which intrigues you and causes you to project an example of one of your own relationships even further (because you fill in the gap in your own explanation... the actual end lyrics were meant to not make sense in the context of the song). AND this causes you to spend a longer time thinking about the song (and put more value on it)

  • i think, or rather hope this song id about he and charlie Mcdonnel

  • I don't get the pun with darling and indecency.

    Anyone care to explain? :)

  • I love the ending.

  • 2:06 lol

  • Uh, my guess is that it seemed fitting? Maybe when Alex was writing it, it just worked that way.

  • I think if you watch the music video, you'll understand that the two people in the song fall out, and only have memories left. By the end of the song, they are friends again and are 'making the memories' by 'stealing the night', etc. This is in present tense, relating to the point that they are still friends, rather than simply just remembering how they used to be. Also, contrary to the lyrics to the song ('darling' implies love, passionate affection), this song is simply about friendship.

  • Maybe he ended it that way just because we would not expect that.

  • 1, the drawing 2, laughed my ass off.

    Loved this.

  • Hello YouTuber!

  • I want you to be my english teacher!!! Would definitely make discussing Dante's Inferno less depressing.

  • This was so great. SO great!

I would say the song ends the way that it does because of the flat statement, "we own the night and it can't be undone." This is ours, and always will be.

It's very powerful and pulls out a meaning of the song that may have gotten washed over by the more obvious meaning of the chorus. Or at least that's how I see it.

  • You are awesome.

  • This woman's amazing. I'd kill to have her as my teacher.

  • You're the only YouTuber that I'm so interested in that I look you in the eyes on my screen.

  • best english teacher ever

  • best english teacher ever

  • best english teacher ever

  • AMAZING! I love it.~~~~

  • Maybe he used that line to say that we do have the memory, but it can't be changed, no matter how badly we yearn for a different path the have been chosen.

  • Love this loads!

Regarding the ending, I think it was simply musically convenient to end on that line, and I imagine the actually lyrics weren't a consideration. Ending in the middle of the bridge makes the listener feel as if the song is unfinished, which will likely result in the listener playing the song again (or any of it's 12 remixes).

  • 'We own the night and it can't be undone' sounds to me like a thematic return to the title of the song, i.e, this night will be forever ours, and it can't be taken from us. Basically, it's a lyrical bookend.

  • She is amazing.

  • EVERYONE GO BUY FOREVER YOURS NOW!!!

    AND BUY THE 12 VERSIONS!!

    LETS GET ALEX TO NO.1

  • This is who I want to be someday.

  • you're sooooo sexy! <3

  • Very intelligent. Brilliant in fact. And extremely funny. Plus you have a cool wall of stuff. Subscribed.

Und ich hab´ deine Nationalität nicht am Akkzent erkannt, sondern an den Reclam-Heften hinter dir. Also Respekt, was dein Englisch angeht!

  • Forever Day!! And currently 4th in the UK? It's amazing! I am amazed! The power of the internet, people! And, of course, a great song, a fearless artist and 12 different versions of the same song, each one quirkier than the one before. Today is a good day! :D

  • happy forever day!!! xD

  • The video (someone asked about it in earlier comments) from what I understand is about Alex and Charlie making videos when they were younger, but then they grew apart, with Charlie looking back on the memories/videos they made. Then, at the end of the song, Alex cones back into Charlie's life.

  • Ich wünschte ich hätte so eine Lehrerin gehabt.

  • I personally don't feel like it's about ending a relationship. I think it's two best friends from childhood. Alex is falling in love, but he knows that it won't move anywhere past a close friendship. But he knows that they will always be friends and always spend time together. And he's okay with that. So they'll have fun together being young and rebellious and making memories while they still can.

But the music video still throws me through a loop. Is Alex supposed to have died? Anybody know?

  • @sutoribenda I think the point is that they would make videos together when they were younger (shown when they use the lower quality camera) and the end shows that those memories are "forever theirs" so at the end they both become the hero's. Alex becomes the Super Hero and Charlie becomes the Zombie Slayer xx

  • The day is a metaphor for youth, when they were younger the people in the story spent a lot of time together making memories, coming up with dreams and aspirations. The night is a metaphor for the opposite, for growing up and running out of time for these "trivial" matters. The ending emphasis on "Now we own the night and it can't be undone" refers to the irreversible process of becoming an adult.

  • astrid, I just want to say thank you.

I have no idea why I'm a bunch of the related videos on the side, but it's definitely helping :P

  • Here I am, procrastinating studying for and AP Lang final on vocab tomorrow, and the video has literary terms. Thanks for being able to let me procrastinate but not at the same time.

  • Perhaps it's emphasizing the fact that the end of a relationship doesn't have to have the dichotomy of either "everything we did together was perfect and it's so tragic it had to end" or "wow I'm really done with that person, they kind of suck." You can have these fantastic memories that you don't have to dismiss even if the relationship didn't work out. I admit I'm definitely projecting a bit, but that's what I got out of it.

  • Uhm… let's see. Maybe it's restating the fact that the memories will be forever yours and they'll never be able to be erased ( except they will, memories fade!)? But they didn't want to end with the title because this day & age we put much emphasis on being "quirky" and breaking the rules from decades ago? (except nothing's new under the sun, they say)

  • I LOVE your dancing at the end. I like that you show teachers can be intelligent, but also fun. :)

  • I feel it ended that way, because the entire song he's seeking closure. And from there, he speaks of the negativity of the relationship. But the song seems to be nostalgic at times, especially as he says that "we'll never forget how it feels to be young." By the end of the song, it seems as if a lot of the closure he was seeking at the beginning dissolved. He'll never find closure because no matter how much he tries, he can't help but acknowledge he misses some parts of their relationship.

  • Tu as de la chance qu'aucun de tes élèves ne t'aie surprise seule en train de faire cours à une caméra ^^

  • I wish I'd seen this video yesterday as I had an English exam this morning! Negation and parallelism would have been perfect! Aghhh I love this video I want to subscribe!

  • This woman... I think I love her...

  • This was great.

  • Because he's taing about the memory...that "it can't be undone" is something very powerful, because that inability to be undone is the same thing as the memory being forever theirs. This, too, is something that is powerful for teenagers, this comforting sense of forever.

  • can you be my first sex teacher?

  • @EHISH dude..... wtf....

  • @TheJollynerd LOL you know youd hit her up too ;)

  • Could you maybe move to America and become my English teacher?

  • This video is great and you are simply delightful! I wish you were my English teacher.

  • Subscribed! I think it ends with 'we own the night and it can't be undone' because then what they had/did/their memories are safe from change and life. And it is like the forever yours sentiment phrased differently.

  • Comment removed

  • 'we own the night' is to do with creating memories; living in the moment of the night with another person. 'It can't be undone' links to the main theme of 'forever', this is a memory they will keep with them. Making rememberance the last sentiment also makes the song more memorable, as it is linked with memory in the audiences' mind.

By using this phrase at the end instead of the chorus lines, the artist makes the song more sincere, while using a similar idea as 'it will be forever mine/yours'

  • do any of your students ever find you online? cuz that could get akward *ahem- dancing/swearing- ahem*

  • I finished the song... it can be undone.

  • That's actually a pretty accurate drawing of Alex.

  • maybe owning the night really was about a friendship that got a bit dreamy, after all owning the night is often used to say that one is triumphantly doing exactly whats expected to be done at night either intimate actions or just dreaming the later would ake more sence since alex day and charles mcdonald are both straight

  • I love this so much:) woooo analysis:D

  • "We own the night," as in, we will always have the memory of our time together, and "it can't be undone," meaning you can't change the past. So he's not going to try and change or fix anything anymore, he's accepted that he can't, so the end of the song is the end of that part of his life and it leaves everything open after the song is over for a new beginning. Err something...

  • This was awesome (:

  • Watched it .... three times now and enjoyed every second of it :)

  • We own the night and it can't be undone is emphasized because it gives resolution to the problem. Moving on is difficult and he doesn't want to (something which would have weighed heavy on alex's mind due to his recent house move) but in the end he still has the memories which cannot be undone.

Brilliant video, I like a good bit of analysis

  • i'd say its probably that he wanted to create an ending that fitted but also didn't at the same time, leaving you wanting to listen again. because like you said, it would've been logical to have the song end forever yours, but that wouldnt give this effect

  • Geez, nerd much?

    <3

  • 1:48 yeah thats pretty much him.....

  • I think Alex probably knew which lines could/should be logically emphasized at the end of the song, and went with something else just to be different. It works though, as I think it's more evocative, and very final - so why not put it at the end of a song!

  • this video is stupid

  • That is the best drawing of Alex Day of all time.

I think "Now we own the night and it can't be undone" is emphasized because it's so final. That's a good statement to end something with, and that's really what this song is about, coming to terms with that relationship ending. I also think it's a happy note to go out on. It's coming to an end, but it did happen. They have that memory now and they'll always have it.

  • @antisnotabug this song always kind of reminded me of "Whatsername" by Green Day.

  • Please be my English teacher?

Not that I don't like the ones I have already, but you'd be great too...

  • Doctor Who reference on her wall of stuff. Fuck yeah.

  • I liked the whole teacher trick thing. Makes me feel intelligent that teachers and professors so often don't know how to answer my questions.

  • @onthatthought Not to make you feel any less intelligent or anything (:D), but they pretty often just ask the class in order to get the students to participate, not because they aren't sure what to say themselves.

  • awesome, love it!

auch wenn mich die vielen Reclam Bücher im Hintergrund an nicht so dolle Deutschstunden erinnern.. schade eigentlich ._.

  • Brilliant!

  • Oh my, you are amazing! Subscribed and coming back to watch your videos when I get some time off my crazy hectic life.

  • 5:12 -- you said "banal"! Yay!

    "Banaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal..."

  • Holy crap. You are awesome!

  • This is incredibly well done. I'm very impressed. Kudos

  • wow. you are brilliant.

  • The last lines highlight the fact that what they've done can't be changed. It is a fixed moment in time. And it'll be forever theirs', bringing back an allusion to the title of the song. This also makes the listener think about the song more than for just the beat and bubble-gum music. They think about the title and relation to the song, and maybe realize that the song isn't about a sappy love story after all :3

  • ...I'm a trainee teacher and an English student. Please teach me to be able to analyse texts like this, and to teach like this! XD

  • Quite enjoy this, even as a student who has only be studying science for the past 2 years.

Just a point though - science teachers love to be contradicted, in my experience, so long as the contradiction can be proved to be correct :P

  • @MrJakemckenna Of course, there is the thought that science is much more grounded in fact than English, and to be proved wrong in science means more (correct) knowledge for everyone. Oftentimes in English, the teacher is saying what a particular author / poet / etc meant, or was thinking while he or she wrote it, which is inherently a much more slippery thing to establish. To be wrong in science is to have the wrong information; to be wrong in English is to be personally wrong.

  • I think the last line is referring to memory made. It's theirs forever and it cannot be remade. What happened, has happened. It could also be equated to the end of a relationship.

  • Beware the weeping angel! Oh an dont blink, just wink.

    I love it!

  • "THAT'S A RHETORICAL QUESTION!"

    ...me, in English class.

  • "THAT'S A RHETORICAL QUESTION!"

    ...me, in English class.

  • hot teacher

  • @afifan13 o_o

  • They didn't want the song to be too catchy... 'cause then it can get annoying.

  • first video i have ever seen by her, and subbed now♥

  • Now we own the night and it can't be undone also recalls the depressing nature of the relationship. I.E. It can't be undone. The night will always be theirs, something to share, forever theirs.

  • PINK. DRAGON. SHIRT. 'Nuff said.

  • He put 'now we own the night and it can't be undone' at the end of the song because , first of all it sounds good, and also because he's talking about memories and 'it can't be undone' signifies that the memory is rather important-as if something good or bad (probably bad because this song is not nice) happened that night and he wants the audience of the song to remember it, thus the 'forever yours' earlier in the song.

    ~a student

  • Why can't my English teacher be like you?

  • ...be my English teacher PLEASE?! o.o

  • The drawing of Alex is my favorite.

  • The rhetorical question bit made me laugh. :')

  • If I may...

The emphasis was placed on the phrase "now we own the night and it can't be undone" not so much to emphasize the phrase itself, but to emphasize the fact that "it will be forever mine, and it will be forever yours." To say that it can't be undone is to say that that particular moment has been immortalized in their memories, and no one can ever take that away from them, which is the theme of the whole song.

If I were to hazard a guess, anyway.

    (Booyah)

  • That's a FIT english teacher!!!!!

  • this is super great!

  • Comment removed

  • I bow to you, great master.

  • Lazy wrap bun! Is that a pencil?

  • you're from germany? I am as well and I've been to the US for quite a bit of time and I did NOt hear an accent... at all

  • @merksmirs She's getting there. Have you ever heard her say "banal" ? Perfect British accent.

  • Best 8 minutes and 10 seconds of my life.

  • I could tell you're German immediately. Can't do anything about that accent, can you? ;)

  • Interesting balance of humor and information, I'll definitely look at your other videos. I loved the end where you confirmed student's beloved belief that when a teacher responds that way, they have no idea what the answer is (always amusing, though, I suspect not to you.) Anyway... I think he used those as the last lines because it confirms a feeling, making it seem more real and definite, giving a line of thoughts a fulfilling conclusion. Or he just wanted to.

  • In my opinion, "we own the night and it can't be undone" is given the place of prominence that it has because it represents the permanence of their memories. no matter his realizations about their relationship and no matter what happens going forward, they will always have their time together. it's a nice thought, and it highlights the main point that I, at least, find in the song

  • thanks for sharing your take. =)

  • *not a real depiction of the artist

    LIES! It Definatley Is!

  • Comment removed

  • Hank Green brought me here...

  • When you're pupils find this channel, it [sarcastic italics] could be [/sarcastic italics] they are going to use that against you during your lessons... At least, that's what I'd do if I saw my English teacher dancing on the internet :)

  • bought and subscribed. :)

  • Brilliant

  • Amazing!

  • This was absolutely fantastic. Very well done.

  • This has to be one of the greatest videos I've seen on YouTube for a long while.

  • I also believe that "This will be forever Yours/ Now we own the night, and it can't be undone" is just refering to the fact that they have made these memories, the entire friendship not just the "stolen day", and whatever happened in the past will be theirs forever, unchanged. It doesn't matter how the singer feels about it, it can't be undone, showing he's "finally accepted" the way their relationship wasn't more than it was. And this is something he doesn't seem to regret (anymore?).

  • left side behind her...whats in that paper cone????

  • This is wonderful :D A nice balance of facts, silliness and a real approach with fun. A nice accurate analysis too. I'll be showing my sister, who is currently doing this kind of analysis in English GCSEs. Keep making videos like this and you're sure to find an audience :D Checking your other videos out now.

  • Because the last word is done. A clever way to end the song

  • Teacher of the year award for this woman.

  • aaah yeah, now i have a link to smash the trolls with ;)

  • I liked the song, but not particularly much. Then I watched this, and now I realise how lovely it really is! I'm participating in forever day now!

  • If she had been my English teacher, I might have actually enjoyed it...

  • GAH. I was trying to hit like and my touchpad went all spastic and I accidentally hit the dislike button. :( :( I far from dislike!!!!!!
