Surprisingly, the 2011 15" & 13" macbook pros have lower pcmark scores than that of the 13" sony vaio z. In the test, the $2199 5.6lb. 15" mbp was using an i7-2720QM (2nd gen) while the $2099 3lb. sony vaio z was using the i5-520M (1st gen). Rest of the specs were about the same, however, the 15" mbp got a 7,648 while the sony vaio got a 9,936. The 4.5lb 13" mbp got a 5,534. btw, these are pcmarks vantage benchmark #s according to laptopmag(dot)com. The sony vaio z came out a year ago too...
Do you guys think I should buy the new MacBook Pro? I have the mid 2009 MBP 13" and I love it. Do you guys think the new specs are worth upgrading? Thanks.
@ACMiLan1113 I have the same machine I since mine works perfectly (of course) the new specs arent good enough that I am gonna change it. So I am gonna wait for the next upgrading!! I mean, as Dave said, I feel too disappointed there is no major change in this recent upgrade.
I'm excited that apple is pushing new technology (thunderbolt/lightpeak). The first iterations is never really all that good, but i'm still glad that they're doing it.
I was disappointed with these releases. All I heard that wasn't some new technology or anything was that they cut a few hours off of the battery life.
Why are people moaning about the design? Apple said when they introduced the unibody they'd be staying with this design for the next 4 years or so. Also, what's wrong with it? This is a pretty meaningless update to the Pros, I am very disappointed.
Useless port with no peripherals, still 2 USB 2.0, still same low resolution displays, processor upgrade is incremental, graphics is ok on 15" and 17" but not a big deal.
@doomtomb3 Why is it useless? I guess USB was useless when it came out because there was nothing for it, or FireWire, or HDMI. What more do you expect from them anyway? USB 3.0 isn't there because Intel don't support it on their chipsets. Very few systems seem to ship with it. Most systems I see are custom rigs. There's also very few USB 3.0 devices out there, does that make USB 3.0 useless? Also what did you expect with the CPU's? 6 core Xeons at 3.33GHz? The IGP is crap but thats Intels fault.
@TalesOfWar Newegg has 112 external hard drives that support USB 3.0. USB 3.0 was needed in 2008 and it doesn't help progress much that in 2011 we are still using USB 2.0. My point is this: there was a lot more rumored hype about the macbook pro refresh and what it turned out to be was the least amount of things they could change, changed.
@doomtomb3 Such is the nature of rumours. They're just that. USB 3.0 has had a rocky start because Intel don't support it on their chipsets. I have no idea why this is the case, but I'd guess Thunderbolt/Light Peak whatever you want to call it has something to do with it. TB allows you to use many connection protocols over the same bus, so you could buy a TB hub that has a bunch of ports like HDMI, Mini DisplayPort, USB 3.0, FireWire 800, Ethernet, S/PDIF in/out and so on, over one cable.
Great video Dave. I think we'll see a chasis redesign next year. I'm hoping that next year also brings USB 3.0 to the table as well with Ivy Bridge. I'm going hold off on this revision. Nice thing with waiting will be getting OSX Lion included.
i believe that these updates are good. although not much has changed, the inclusion of quad core processors and all macbook pros including core i5 and i7 processors are good additions to the lineup. the thing that i don't get is the thunderbolt port. how does it work and how can it help people like mtself
@coolfreak1mannan They don't put a TV connection on a COMPUTER. The mini is the exception because they're aimed at the home theatre set up. Mini DisplayPort is far more capable than HDMI. It allows higher resolution images, isn't encrypted (it's a faster stream) and can also be used to transmit general data, hence them using the same port and connection to implement Thunderbolt. If you want HDMI so badly, get an adapter. Oh, DisplayPort has no royalties to pay either like HDMI does.
I still love my "old" i7 MBP but a quad-core i7 with HT ? Meaning 8 treads.. That would be a bit of an upgrade.. but still.. If i had to buy one now, i would go for the previous version because they will drop in price quickly! Anyone agrees ???
@McgregorKLB The QUAD MBPs only benefit you really if you're doing a lot of multitasking or using heavily threaded apps. The next revision of Final Cut I'm sure will take full advantage of 8 threads! ;) iPhoto and iMovie are still only 32bit. :- /
Technology isn't advancing as much as it once was, and now there's honestly not a whole lot they would change about the chassis; it's the epitome of everything Apple likes about their computers. I'll admit I was disappointed they didn't offer the removal of the ODD in favor of a second HDD or bigger battery, but I guess it makes sense because the only thing different about this chassis is the Thunderbolt logo, so plugging up the ODD slot would change the manufacturing process.
Not impressed that they are not offering a Core i3 version of the 13 inch, and are going straight to Core i5 and i7 at the cost of 3 hours of battery life.
@belsikner I suspect the battery life isn't actually changed. I remember their last presentation for the MacBook Air where they mentioned they're basing battery life on far more strict and real life situations. 7 hours sounds more accurate, that's what I tend to get out of my MacBook Pro (2010 model) during a regular days use running Photoshop, InDesign, browser, mail, iTunes and a bunch of other stuff.
does anybody know when the iMacs are likely to be refreshed? i've been holding of for about 2 months now... shall i just go for it, or will it be updated in a month or something? thanks x
@GeneralOfKnowledge Based on what they added to the MacBook Pro's, I'd wait. They'll surely get an HD "FaceTime" camera (I'll keep calling it iSight as I'm old skool lol) and the Thunderbolt port. Maybe they'll have 2 so it can act as a hub. It'd be AWESOME if they do because you couple plug in 2 Cinema Displays for a 3 screen set up and daisy chain some beefy NAS box to edit video from in real time. Plus, better CPU's and GPU's are surely coming.
Very pleased with these updates. I remember when I got my G4 with Firewire in 2002 - and sure enough there were many firewire audio interfaces that came out so... interesting to see what will happen with Thunderbolt. As for the negative comments - everyone's entitled to an opinion & no machine is going to please everyone. 1280x800 is fine for a 13inch iThinks - any more than that & some may have to squint - maybe an option to go to a higher resolution would be good, but imo that is (Goto 2)

hmm I'm a little disappointed with the 13 inch model because the intel HD integrated graphics is no better than the previous nvidia GPU, the 15 and 17 inch models are great though.
I'm a little puzzle to know how they solve the heating problem because those processors tend to get hot as hell.
@ilovebreadcrumbs AMD produce more power efficient mobile GPU's than NVIDIA. NVIDIA tend to focus more on the desktop. On top of that, NVIDIA have had a pretty poor track record when it comes to their GPU's failing. Remember the whole 8600M and 8800M thing a few years ago when they'd die after not very long? That affected thousands of laptops (not just Macs) and cost those manufacturers millions, not to mention bad rep. AMD also had their new line out before them in time for production.
No price drop? Intel GPU? No model re-design? 1280x800 resolution? No sale. Of course its nice to see Core i5s, and i7s in the Macbooks now. I am not paying 1300 dollars for a notebook with a crap intel video processor and a low resolution.

@TalesOfWar the problem is i cant help it, im just too curious :D
but i made a decision im gonna go to the store and have a look at them and if i dont like em ill wait for the next update of either the MBP or the MBA
would buy a MBA now if it had thunderbolt and sandy bridge..
It looks pretty good all though it wasn't the upgrade I was hoping for. I'm especially disappionted about the 3-hour battery time loss. Though none of this is going to stop me from buying this.
@pochoun33137 16:9 isn't as good for "Pro" stuff. You want as many pixels as possible, and it would alter the form factor and end up giving us a smaller trackpad unless the boarder around the display was made larger. These GPU's support OpenCL, that's one of the area's they're a vast improvement over the previous IGP's they used (the Intel ones that is). What's wrong with AMD GPU's for gaming? They're no less capable. They use less power for one, which is important.
@TalesOfWar 's current 16:9 Cinema Displays say otherwise when it comes to "Pro" stuff. I do agree that a 16:9 aspect ratio would alter the form factor, but it wouldn't force the trackpad to be any smaller (it would only increase the width and allow for better speakers in 13" models) . Also, I mentioned still using 1280x800 as a base resolution in their "Pro" products. For a "Pro" machine I expect 1600×900 in 13" models. I love but...
ffssssss i got the 13 inch macbook duel core in september now i have to get another 1700 dollars any 1 know how much i can sell a 13inch macbook pro 90% new?
Dave, is it apple's policy to let you return a product (MBP) if you bought it 2 weeks before an update (like this one) and then buy a newer one? thanks!
@gggggag You should be able to return stuff up to 30 days if they release a new model in that time frame. The 14 days thing is just their regular return policy of "no questions asked, full refund if you didn't like/need/want it". It may differ from country to country, but I think they're similar every where they sell stuff (assuming you bought it from Apple themselves and not a reseller).
The 7 hours is more realistic... Honestly, when every tech site tested the10 hour battery life, they got 5-7 hours... but i think Apple is aware of this and made it a realistic time that will get 7 hours when its tested
i had it since march 2010 started my course til now. good condition because i've the seethrough satin cover on it plus keyboard protectors too :) upgraded 4gb RAM
I've been waiting for mounths for the right timeti buy a new MacBook pro! I'm happy with the new model, processors are better in the lower end models and I'm so happy that the rumours about ditching the SuperDrive wernt true!! The only downside a suppose us the battery life, but it's still good at 7 hours and it wouldn't put me off buying an mbp at all!!
Now for ipad 2!! My god I'll be backrupt by June if I don't control my tech obsession lol :)
I really like the new iterations. Pushing the envelope with great graphics and fantastic cpu performance. If I had teh moneys, I would probably get me a 17 inch.

@TalesOfWar the problem is i cant help it, im just too curious :D
but i made a decision im gonna go to the store and have a look at them and if i dont like em ill wait for the next update of either the MBP or the MBA
would buy a MBA now if it had thunderbolt and sandy bridge..
the next 5-12 months are gonna be veeery long :D

Got a mental theory on the next iPad. I think it might include Thunderbolt. Syncing would be 20 times faster...

It looks pretty good all though it wasn't the upgrade I was hoping for. I'm especially disappionted about the 3-hour battery time loss. Though none of this is going to stop me from buying this.
KingBENN100 1 year ago
@KingBENN100 Apple did a new battery test, the same as with the MBA and this is the result.

I really hope that gaming doesn't get destroyed with Nvidia being dropped from the the lineup.
For some reason refuses to give us Blu-Ray, and why are these "Pro" models still starting at resolutions of 1280x800?
Come to think of it, why are these notebooks still at the 16:10 aspect ratio and not at 16:9?
really made a big deal about OpenCL and as I understand it intel's HD GPUs doesn't support it!!! Although a good upgrade, its not a great one
pochoun33137 1 year ago 2
@pochoun33137 16:9 isn't as good for "Pro" stuff. You want as many pixels as possible, and it would alter the form factor and end up giving us a smaller trackpad unless the boarder around the display was made larger. These GPU's support OpenCL, that's one of the area's they're a vast improvement over the previous IGP's they used (the Intel ones that is). What's wrong with AMD GPU's for gaming? They're no less capable. They use less power for one, which is important.
TalesOfWar 1 year ago
@TalesOfWar 's current 16:9 Cinema Displays say otherwise when it comes to "Pro" stuff. I do agree that a 16:9 aspect ratio would alter the form factor, but it wouldn't force the trackpad to be any smaller (it would only increase the width and allow for better speakers in 13" models) . Also, I mentioned still using 1280x800 as a base resolution in their "Pro" products. For a "Pro" machine I expect 1600×900 in 13" models. I love but...
AMD GPU = Great
Intel's GPU history= not so great...

Dave, is it apple's policy to let you return a product (MBP) if you bought it 2 weeks before an update (like this one) and then buy a newer one? thanks!

@gggggag Yes, I am doing that today. I am getting the new one after I ordered the now old one last week.
sk8erdude2463 1 year ago
@gggggag You should be able to return stuff up to 30 days if they release a new model in that time frame. The 14 days thing is just their regular return policy of "no questions asked, full refund if you didn't like/need/want it". It may differ from country to country, but I think they're similar every where they sell stuff (assuming you bought it from Apple themselves and not a reseller).

it's very similar to las years update

The 7 hours is more realistic... Honestly, when every tech site tested the10 hour battery life, they got 5-7 hours... but i think Apple is aware of this and made it a realistic time that will get 7 hours when its tested

BrokenBjartur 1 year ago
They are great, but 7h? I'm not sure if its worth the money anymore :(
CSscrubs 1 year ago 2
7h battery life isn't great imo. The old MBP 13" had 10h battery life and the 17" MBP had 8h..

@renegade8164 they used the better testing method for the new mbps (same testing as mba)

are the intel graphics on the 13 inch good enough? Read somewhere that they ware only comparible to the 310M (and not 320M)
thanks for all your awesome videos by the way!
