  • Travis Barker rules the kit. This cat's cool, though. TB!

  • i can see his paradiddles, 50 ways, and aja all weaved in there. great drummer, great feel, awesome

  • this is all about the groove not the technique ... luv this drummer !!

  • See more of Steve Gadd on SoulDrummers . com.

  • Saying Gadds sticks are "useless for metal" is pretty ignorant. They're actually great for faster playing as they are lighter and also playing with a lighter stick promotes control when you switch to heavier ones, where control comes more easily.

  • Steve is a machine. Think growing up I admired Steve a little bit. Did not know that much about him but I LOVE his drumming/style. He just has that naturally ability/talent to play drums and keep timing. It's nice to see varying drum grooves too. In the old days I admired drummers that knew how to play the snare well. Great riffs and all of that. Thanks for posting the video. And when you insert these great grooves of Steve's on songs man!!! COOL!!!

  • I've transcribed this solo in the 'Up Close' book I wrote for Steve. If you are a good reader ,there's a ton of stuff to learn here. Look up 'Paradiddle Song' on here for me playing along with one of Steve's favourites, Louie Bellson along with Gene Krupa playing a cute duet !

  • anyone know how to get that rolling sound with bass and toms, without using double bass?

  • @drumplayer4th triplets BLR BLR

  • 50 ways @ 0:34 ! :D

  • You can use any stick for any style. Don't be so blinkered in your approach to drumming.

  • search: amorphic drum

    what is this technique??

  • Nobody blows dick like me!!! Never have, never will. I own the flesh popsicle, swallow it all too!

  • @youwishyocouldplay what...are you 12 or something??? wtf?

  • what is Steve Gadd's name ?

  • lol and many years later he still uses the same tricks:)

  • ah man i'm going to play this for my VCE stuff...it's gunna be hard but i'm sure i'll get there.

  • This solo defines groove

  • fuck i always get so disheartened when i see guys that are this good

  • this guy is one of the best drummers ever..don't try to compare yourself to him. just have fun and keep playing.

  • considering what has been recorded and popular in the last 40 years, being the most recorded drummer is a dubious honor.

  • YUM YUM! That was very very TASTEY :)

  • In response to harhar004's comment...

I'm just interested. Has Gadd been recorded more than any other drummer?? I always thought Bernard Purdie was the most recorded followed by Jeff Porcaro? I've been trying to search the net to find out but cant get a clear answer.. does anyone else know??

  • Youre Mama!

  • Best song EVER! Who is the drummer?

  • Well, although he's almost equally good, it's not Julian Marciniak but Steve Gadd.

  • @WhoIsTheDrummer l o l

  • arguing about who the best drummer is, is pointless because both people will leave the arguement thinking they both won thus cancelling each other out and wasting each others time! Drumming is an art and as suck there is no best drummer because best is suck a subjective word.

  • is suck a subjective word its such deuche

  • rrdrums110, dude, you've got to stop bashing all of Gadd's videos. I mean the guy is the most recorded drummer of all time! That tells you something about the skill level and musicality of his playing. Besides, I'm pretty sure you don't come close to him at playing the drums, so quit hating!

  • You don't have to be 'pretty sure' - you can be positive! :) There's a video on YouTube called 'rrdrums110 tells it like it is'. Listen to it and it will explain everything. In short, somehow this guy is trying to become relevant in the drumming world by negativity since he can't do it from behind the kit.

  • notariooo

  • of course better looking

  • amazing pg!!!

  • I like the style of this man..so smooth and clear..i love jazz..erskine is a legend too..

  • i like ur style man..hope to learn from u a lot..

  • this makes me want to learn the drums again.

    :)

  • Why? everything I've said is the truth.

  • Hey all gadd fans. I want to apologize to you all and to steve gadd for all my rude classless remarks I've mad along the way. and I've made many about him and to some of you personally. I am truly ashamed of myself and am now going to attempt to make amends as the 8th step in AA demands rightfully so. Don't worry I haven't gone out but if I keep up the negativty I could easily relapse. From now on if I don't have something positive to say I'm not going to say anything at all. Truly sorry rrdrums

  • Hmmm, I guess upon reflection rrdrum110's solo videos didn't come out as well as he had hoped. it's cool man, nobody expected you to record anything. And although I am not entirely certain this or any of the other Youtubes where you are currently falling on your sword are sincere, it's at least a start. But considering all you've done, don't think we won't be watching. You caused way too much trouble for anyone to immediately forget. All this amounts to is a calm in the storm.

  • u no its possible to remove your comments. id be doin that if i were u

  • Midol helps for mangina discomfort.

Be sure to take it with plenty of water; most angry men forget that part of the instructions.

    Medicate, but don't self-medicate.

  • @rrdrums110 Damn dude, I'm glad you said that. That is literally one of the best youtube comments ever made. I saw what you've said on so many videos and after seeing this, I'm letting you know that you're forgiven man. Best of luck staying sober!

    -Sam

  • @rrdrums110 LIES! I know you're still hungry you troll.

  • @rrdrums110 It's cool man. your just upset your not as good as Gadd. it happens to alot of people.

  • @rrdrums110 Sweet mother of jesus.

    Re-read that a good 14 times.

  • @rrdrums110 wooh,.. pretty cool you apologised. Good luck!!

  • @rrdrums110 It's okay, what matters is you apologised and understood what you did wrong.

  • beast

  • Yeah it's time for him to change to a good sounding kit isn't it? Get some cymbals thaat ring while he's at it. As for this being a technical solo . I would agree for a 5th year student. But this is as technical as this nothing much drummer gets. Oh yeah his time is pretty good. Not perfect. Oh yeah he's adjusting out of it for the pocket. I forgot he's the groooooooove master. Oh stevie

  • do you just spend your lonely days goin around youtube dissin drummers who are more famous/talented/original and obviously popular than you? get a new hobby you saddo

  • one word......WOW

  • His left hand looks like it would be awfully difficult to learn drums, but hey, it obviously works for him. Does he teach to play drums using that stick holding style?

  • it's called the jazz grip or traditional grip.

provides a wider range of motion that jazz drummers need...

  • The way Steve's holding his sticks is the way a REAL DRUMMER holds them....

  • Ok then hero.

  • doesn't mean a damn thing how you hold the sticks, champ.

  • @sbranson12 This particular solo cannot be played with the same syncopated nuance by using matched grip.

If you think you can do it, you are either not actively listening to your own playing critically enough, or you are lying to yourself.

We'd have to view YOUR YourTube vid, you playing the same solo note-for-note. What...y-y-y-you don't have a camcorder? Borrow one. Wha-a-a-a-t...? You don't own your own drum kit? Film yourself down at The Guitar Center. Show us yer skizzles, anson

  • haha. real funny, spiderman.

you wont see any videos of me for a reason. mostly because i'm not looking for your opinion on my playing.

go ahead and post your own video if you want my opinion, though.

  • 0:01

  • 'm with that juggalo maggot too, but the trouble is with age, im getting mor and more away from metal and more into old school rock. sorta like steve lukather's style

  • mamm mi quanto era giovane

  • love gadd. i don't listen to alot of the music he preforms, i'm more of a metal drummer, however he is the only drummer i look to for different techniques. his style is so amazing, yet so universal, it can be used in any style of music if worked at hard enough. and his sig. sticks are the only ones i'll ever buy

  • your just like me dude

  • @666MaggotJuggalo999 His toothpick sticks will never be good for metal dude.

  • @Youwishyoucouldplay they will not? Personally, I have never seen a professional drummer using bigger sticks than Gadd. And that includes the greatest metal drummers. If there were any benefit to using bigger sticks, it would be well known.

I got two questions for you: First, why do you think bigger sticks are better?

Second: can you name some drummers who do use bigger sticks?

  • @AtheisticSpoon B/s non player. All pro rockdrummers use a big ger stick than gadd. god you are stupid to come at me w/such nonsense. A bigger stick makes for a real rock sound JR. Gadd can't now or before and never has been known for a rock or even big sound in anything. Why? Weak soft touch player w/small stick

  • @Youwishyoucouldplay You failed to name one single drummer whom uses bigger sticks than Gadd. Could it be because you don't know of any?

  • @AtheisticSpoon I think "Youwishyou..." is young and have learn much more. He is sure that he knows eveerything but hes not.

  • @AtheisticSpoon uhm Buddy Rich for example. but also dave weckl, peter erskine...I've tried all these sig sticks. Abe Laboriel Jr uses HUGE drumsticks. go to vic firth website and see it by yourself on the sig sticks page.

  • @Youwishyoucouldplay Alright little homosexual Norway fag. Neil Peart, John Bonham, Carl palmer , Mike Portnoy, Danny Carey, Keith Moon, Mitch Mitchell, Billy Cobham,Terry Bozzio,Gavin harrison, dave weckl,Dennis Chambers and all the rest of anybody in the biz. gadd uses one of the lightest sticks on the market. I'm not sure but i think 7a's are even heavier. Now fuck off dipshit. You have never seen a pro drummer live. HUH?

  • @Youwishyoucouldplay Don't you ever get full from eating off anger? Cmon you and I both know Gadd is awesome.

  • @666MaggotJuggalo999 His sticks are useless for metal. So what do we think about you now? A full ofshit non player? That selection fits well.

  • @drummerforreal1 When did Gadd ever play metal?

  • @drummerforreal1 Gadd plays with a sense of style...Metal? ???????

  • @drummerforreal1 My stepdaughters' are always swatting around on my kit..They could play a metal song easily....All you need is a two and four backbeat...Am I correct?

  • @Savafan313 I'm responding to a twerp w/a666 name that claims he's a metal drummer that only uses Gadd's sig sticks... Do you know how light gadd's stick is?

That make the 666 guy a twerpnonplayertardliar. As far as gadd playing metal? ROFLMFAO... Gadd to my knowlegde has never even played rock...Gadd does have a style that is to be coveted for finesse and controlled sticking of the less is more variety. I admire his controlled bounce flam 4/4/into 3's and back fluidity. Also trad grip

  • @Savafan313

Depends. There are various ways to play for different styles of metal. Some styles are not as simple and stupid as stereotypes say they are.

  • DAVID BLAINE!!

  • damn his control in his fingers overcomes me everytime i hear one of his rolls, lol!

  • he's had worked too on particular and personal up-stroke and down-stroke, where the low stroke is a ghost note obtened with the finger and up-stroke is a personal full-controlled stroke. try it, I study in this way and gadd style is for me the real and logic continuation of Buddy rich drumming, enveloped in a medern way.

For me it's most difficult to play with a personal style, gadd colaiuta donati ecc. all use a personal tecnic and style.

I love steve gadd, but also i love the music he plays.

  • great solo!

  • Gadd > Vigil, in my opinion

  • Steve gadd. Hes a pretty good drummer. Virgil is my fav. too.

  • 'He's a pretty good drummer'!!! Man he's more than that, he is the most influential ever!

  • Grandisssimo steveeeee!!!

  • how old is he. he looks the same in all the newer vids hes in

  • talking rubish,

Gadd the way to play drums so he is that part of the music history. A TRUly GEnius

  • Love the "50 ways to leave your lover" Cameo at 00:35!

    =D

  • Steve is a true master, he knows how to combine technical ability with good taste and creativity. I love that drum set. Sounds great and very easy to play.

  • His had the drum set for soo long. STEVE GADD IS DA SHIT

  • hahaha yah a little to into it!

  • haha he looks so determined :D

  • opinions. Gadd = Pocket Groove

Virgil Donati = Power and alien like interdependance. I could go on.

  • Steve Gad is good. Billy Cobham is the best.

  • Sweet! I love his linear 32nds at 00:30, then shifts gears right into "50 ways to leave your lover."

  • V e r y Nice.

I like gadd, not the best, but a good one he is.

  • WHo is the best?

  • Steve Gadd

  • I would think God would be. :)
