  • "Ill let the name generator poop one for me"

    4:45

    trololol

  • i still have the one you can download, fully updated as of 2010, but we never really stick to updates.

  • I use a custom 4e Character Builder. It may not be as pretty, but it works.

  • This video is a favorite on Sanaa

  • Hmmm... seems to me like the problem with the direction being taken by WotC is that D&D is being dumbed down to cater to the lowest common denominator... what Gary Gygax created was a complex system, and that's what made it great... I was around playing the original versions of these games when I was a kid, and this is not the direction I would have taken it. What you should do is go back to the complexity, but just make tools that help people deal with that complexity... dont dumb it down.

  • You know what Wizards, you're greedy mother fuckers. I've been trying to get into this game forever. I've spent over a hundred dollars on all your stupid books, and i've wasted my time trying to learn this game. But you people make this game so expensive to do simple things like get help creating a character that you make this game exclusive. Kids can't get near this game because unless you have a job, and expendable income this game is worthless.

  • make it free please

  • can u seend me the link i cant find it, lol

  • Can you still log in to the old application if you have an account?

  • Comment removed

  • This is almost as bad as WoW now. You have to have a constantly active insider account to so much as ACCESS your characters. Meaning, you cannot update at will now. Subscription up = No table-top gaming.

Terrible decision by Thieves of the Coast.

  • @Omnislash89 Woah, they changed class oficially?

  • 4.0 is wierd I like 3.5 better

  • WTF, just went to try it out and I have to pay? That's complete BS!

  • Sad part is - you have to pay to use this. That isn't incentive for new people to try out D&D when everything either is very complex to the point where no one will teach you -- or when everything you can use is fucking expensive or costs money to use which something like this shouldn't...

  • @LeVaughnX

You can buy heroes of the fallen lands for 13.50 and the rules compendium for the same price and have plenty to be a player in fourth edition at 27 dollars.

  • did that guy look think his feats at all when he did that invoker? human resolve? you have -1 mod on charisma that doesnt make any sense

i agree this new builder isnt as good as the older. one of the reasons is that you cant use this after your subscribtion ends so. i think that was the real idea of this new builder. not the reason that you could use it on mac,

  • So is the character build only for 4.0

  • Definently sucks

the old one was MUCH better

    >.> guess they were getting lazy for the offline generator...

sucks how they changed it, I am betting they are going to loss so many people...

  • Great, the laptop I downloaded this on broke, and now I have to subscribe to download it again? Fuck you WOTC.

  • This is stupid and disappointing, now I will never subscribe to DDI

  • @chililili Agreed TT-TT

  • I'm glad I found out here in the comments that this uses Silverlight. Now I don't need to waste my money on a subscription for a product I wont even be able to use (Linux User).

  • Definitely not going to renew my DDI subscription, the old character builder was the only reason I had one to begin with and this new one is several steps off in a dark, different direction that I don't wish to follow.

  • Hurry?!? The big part of the enjoyment of the game is tinkering around with your character.

  • ugh, when i get my supcription do i have to have my charatcer sheets like that or can i just keep them like they were at first

  • I am so disappointed with how many times he said "I'll just let the computer choose for me..." since when was this the fun of DnD!? I am extremely angry with the browser application. I probably won't renew my subscription.

  • I don't mind it being online what i do take exception to is the lack of customization options i run a campaign of my own design and my players cant insert there deities from my home grown pantheon in their sheets, hopefully they will fix this soon or i might not renew subscription

  • @Khanthiilas

Agreed. I miss the house rules options from the offline builder, but it is much more streamlined than it used to be. Although it can choke up a bit when looking through feats.

  • Paying to rent your character is a blatant move to take ownership out of the hands of the customer. Offer us a CB we can flat out buy, I don't care about your terrible DDI articles.

  • Doesnt work on Linux :'(

  • Running on MAC? PRAISE the gods!

  • Needs some work, but I'm glad it runs in a browser. Easier for the developers... and most important - I don't have to spin up my windows vm to run CB anymore.

  • i like the old character sheet better also i like 4e if u want 3.5e the books are still there.... just look for em.

  • Sure this may be faster and look kinda cooler but the old one was way better.

  • Totally agree with the character sheets. It is not very functional. They could at least grant you the option to select the kind of character sheets you want to use. It does not seem that you can select a second language anymore, did I miss something? Or did Wizards?

  • oh and you cannot import custom portraits so you can only pick from generic options

  • Tried it today.....

    VERY SLOW,

    Errors all over the place

Bad suggestions on races, especially Dark Sun with some races that dont exist in that world.

Character Sheets are ugly and look less functional that before.

  • Good for you WOTC. Should'a been done like this from the first. Kudos. I agree with the import/export requests though.

  • I wish that WoTC would have an import/export button...i have around 20 people playing at a public place an each have a character with the older CB character sheet and it looks like WoTC is using the Essentials format, I lost 2 months of my PAID subcription for a more dumb down version of the greatest game ever! Wher is the Caracter Visualizer, the Dungeon Builder, and the 3D Game Table that was promised us 5 years ago, If you dont belive me look it up right here on YouTube 4th edition revieled.

  • I have to say it looks good - but not good enough to justify the monthly price of DDI.

  • I love D&D!

  • Not everyone is a 4e Essentials player that has little time to create a character and needs something quick so they can get in an hour of gaming time. Many people still like to use homebrew campaign settings and have characters that they took the time to create and flesh out to help make for a better role-playing expirience. It would be nice if WotC would think of those kinds of people when they create a new product or revise an older one.

  • Let me guess... we need a permament DDI subscription to use it? If so I think I'll stick with the offline version.

  • @marasmusine Yep, Pay-to-Play :(

  • Comment removed

  • My only issue....why do you need a character builder program for 4th edition? I sat my friends 8 year old down and they built a character in less time than it takes to type this comment...

  • @Amaraxis If you want to build a char with all stuff already pub, yes. Or you memorized all books and Dragons, which would be impressive

  • 1. Wizards of the Coast are assholes; they destroyed a past time favored by many by discarding 30+ years of D&D mythology and standards for a D&D game, and turning it into a World of Warcraft-wannabe on paper

    2. 4th Edition sucks ass as a D&D game; go to 3.5e or earlier, or Pathfinder, which is what WotC should've done!

    3. Paizo's Pathfinder just TIED with WotC's garbage 4E...TIED in SALES! WotC let rookies show then up because truth is, WotC wants what it wants, not what YOU want

  • @Razzelmire

    1. Every D&D edition is drastically different from its previous incarnation. That's how the game has remained healthy. That's how the older editions have remained popular. 4e is no "WoW clone" and you have to really stretch your concepts of both MMOs and PnP to get them to fit like that.

    2. 3.5 was broken at a fundamental level. It had a lot of third party support and has a lot of resources; 4e will get that eventually.

    3. Pathfinder did not fix what broke in 3.xe

    Stop fanboying.

  • @BombCog You are right about 3.x/Pathfinder/4E, you are completely wrong when it comes to pre WotC D&D. The Compiled oD&D into AD&D, and AD&D into AD&D 2nd edition can be used interchangeably without substantial hiccup. Additionally base oD&D into Holmes Basic, into Mentzer B/X into Moldvay/Cook BEMCI is the same way. Not living through those years of D&D does not give you carte blanch to ignore the facts about them.

  • @lordofnightmares I would not at all say that oD&D and AD&D were so similar as to be effectively interchangeable. My first D&D was AD&D 2e, and reading the older books is rather humorous, really. Are oD&D and AD&D2e more similar than 2e and 3.5? Yes. Does that make them extermely similar? No!

  • @BombCog M first was BEMCI, then to 2E, then Compiled oD&D. Compiled oD&D - that's all of the pamphlets, and the additional rules presented in the first 5 years of Dragon Magazine -IS- AD&D 1st edition. The 3 books of AD&D1 were the compiled rules of oD&D put into a three book format and copyeditted. They're close enough that I was able to take my AD&D2 character and play it under Compiled oD&D without changing anything. That is extremely similar. You are wong. Deal with it.

  • @Razzelmire Tied for one quarter from one unreliable source. Everything else is opinion. I happen to love 4e. 3.5 destroyed it in my opinion, by worrying more about having a rule for walking and chewing gum at the same time, rather than rememembering that it's a game.

  • Looks Great!!!

  • Silverlight? Seriously?

  • Is there a reason you use these use ASP and Silverlight?

All of this could have been accomplished through PHP and jQuery, and would have been functional across ALL platforms (PC, Mac, Android and iOS).

The concept is good, and the program looks alright, but frankly, the proprietary technology you're using means I am abandoning support.

I canceled my subscription, and I don't play Encounters.

I play Dungeons and Dragons, and from here forth, I'll just go back to using my Pencil.

  • What about adding custom content like races and so forth?

  • While I like the fact that the web based CB will finally allow MAC users to use the program (I have two in on of my campaigns), and will allow me to use the program where ever I have web access, there doesn't seem to be any character management options like there are in the current CB (applying milestones, short/extended rests, etc)

Those were features I liked about the current versions because it allowed me to use my laptop at the game. Now I'll have to print out a .pdf version. Not optimal

  • does this support only 4.0 characters or can i make a 3.5 character?

  • @Thamior24 4.0

  • @Thamior24

WotC doesn't care about earlier editions of D&D, which is why they fail. They have the money and ability to continue giving some small support to the older editions, but they don't because they suck and they don't care. World of Warcraft still lets you play WoW even if you don't have the expansion packs. I don't understand why WotC can't learn to do the same by supporting 1e, 2e, and 3e/3.5e just a little bit, web articles or one book a year or something

  • How many characters can thy store?

  • Looks pretty decent. Im a Mac user and Essentials only player. I could see myself subscribing for a month, printing out 4 or 5 characters with a couple levels selections (probably 1, 5, 11, and 21) then scooting off.

  • I wouldn't call that an boon for the Insider. But for those who want to use it, hey, what ever floats your boat.

  • Also, it would be nice if you let Code Monkey do some of this stuff for you again. They're dying over there.

  • So the .Net system didn't work out for you guys? Well, that's a shame, I thought it was a good showcase for the technology, even if it didn't work perfectly all the time. I hope you guys get mobile apps and other ways to access it then just this clunky type of web interface for it though. I hope to at least try it before we have to buy it.

  • Its not as... familiar as I'd like, but its not bad.

I've never been too keen on "user friendly" programs, hence my annoyance, but this is still motivating me to join up finally. I really gonna test the tools out before I give it a full what for. Wanna know what their Dark Sun sheets look like too.

Nice effort on showing off the tools before they go live. Thanks for that.

    *~t3h C.

  • @ReikoSpazz It looks like they are using the Essential's Character Sheet. I'm still undecided if that's good or bad. I thought they were an amazing design for the Red Box and appealed to new players, but not sure how this will go over in my regular game. I prefer the original 4th Sheets.

  • I dig it. This should work very well for my needs. Hopefully one day there will be an offline option. Overall, this is the way it should have been from day 1 instead of the client app.

  • it is a step backwards with a 'shiny new look' just like the one I didn't ask for or wanted

  • Boo. :( My D&D group uses the character creator offline.. to make it an online application only destroys the use of it. This is horrible news Wizards. I humbly ask you to reconsider this because not everyone has the internet!

  • Good GOD people, I've never seen such whining over something so minor. You know, I'm just delighted that they have a system for easy character creation. I remember doing it all by hand, and taking the better part of a session. Now you can spit out a level 1 character inside of 15 minutes. Why can't anyone appreciate this application? If its so terrible, don't use it.

  • @Basmalo2 Because the previous iteration of this program worked better (arguable) and more conveniently for many users. Going from offline to online CB is a huge step down in utility and functionality for many users.

  • @similitudinous I have to second this. Microsoft Silverlight isn't the most secure of things, either. Also, making a character with lots of class features (like a bard) truncates the second and third pages when printing, so the right margin is eaten into, and you don't get the full page of printing. I've tried it on the 3 main webbrowsers and it's still a problem. The online version of the C.B. still has a LONG way to go before it's ready for serious use.

  • @Basmalo2 The whining isn't over a minor thing. The old character builder didn't require being online to use. Their claim that your stuff is available 'anytime, anywhere' is laughably untrue. Those of us with a current sub waited three months for an update of the old software, only to find out that they're giving us a new program with less functionality, limited storage space, no import/export, no ability to customize sources, etc. I find it insulting.

  • @Basmalo2 that's the thing, some of us have year subscriptions and we are being junked out of them, because the far superior offline program will no longer get updated. this new online program may have all the bells and whistles and recieve the latest patches, but after my subscription ends, it will no longer have my use.

  • @Basmalo2 They are whining because they will now have to pay for what they are getting. Take the number of whiners and divide it by 20 the quotient will be the number of whiners that actually were paying for the software and are whining about legitimate concerns. The other 95% are whining because they can no longer get something for free and thier 'threats' of cancelling their subscriptions are conpletely empty since they have no current subscription.

  • @Velocinox You are far exaggerating the piracy issue, just like when WotC decided electronic books were no longer worth their time. The fact is that I have paid for the use of a program, not a service. I can no longer control this program. I don't have it. I can't save it. I have paid for a thing that I can not hope to guarantee my own access to at any level. This is not a good business model and it is not ethical to pull this kind of bait and switch on your customers. Those are the facts.

  • @BombCog I'm not a tacletop player. VTT only in random groups from only a month after the CB was released HALF of the players admitted to having a keygen copy of the CB. I am not exaggerating the piracy issue, you just aren't exposed to it. As far as what you bought, you bought nothing, you paid for a license. that license is changing and the service granted in that license is being upheld in a different format. Nothing is being taken away from you. You don't OWN anything in software these days.

  • DDI Sub: Canceled.

  • Comment removed

  • I don't see a homebrew button and this scares me.

  • Would have been nice if they would have just said this was what they were doing, instead of lying about taking so long because of troubles getting Dark Sun and Essentials into the regular CB, thus cheating many people out of 2 months of subscription.

  • @Tensen01 Its wizards of the coast? What did you expect?

  • @Tensen01 Any month that CB didn't update, Customer Service offered a refund to anybody who asked for it.

  • This looks significantly more obnoxious to navigate than the old CB, also slower.

  • Well I am sure it will be buggy out of the gate, that's just WOTC software, but it's still better than $100 for hero lab. Too bad the previous software users had to cheat WOTC out of their income. That was a good system once it got stable.

  • @Velocinox yes, the alleged software users who allegedly cheated WOTC out of alleged income.

  • @similitudinous Who allegedly have already cracked the compendium and will crack the character builder as well.

  • Will we be able to import the offline CB files into the new version?

  • @mewarmor990

I don't really see why you would need to. I mean, sure it would be nice, but it won't be hard to imput things fresh, even if you have to. Just open the new webpage, and the builder, and fix in all your info.

  • In the equipment section.. I would love the ability to put a check mark next to each item I want to purchase.. then click on buy once..

  • This can save a ton of time now.
